Looks a pretty good layout inside, not too shabby and looks well put together.

This is a very generic unit, very similar to the store brand ones that are a dime a dozen these days so I wouldn't be paying too much. Silan CD chipset, little 2W amplifier ICs, Sanyo SFP101N clone CD mechanism and the build even looks the same. There are a steady supply of these on ebay with knackered CD mechs, and they never seem to last very long but replacements are dirt cheap so it's no big deal - the SFP101 is pretty much the only game in town still being mass-produced by several suppliers now. Yeah, they work.

I have a couple of cheap Retekess radios and they are,on the whole, really good value for money!

For its size, it performs really well, nice to see a new c.d player with radio :-D As you read the power input i knew it must have a switch mode psu. Hopefully the switcher lasts, it looks very small.

Nice boombox, always interesting to see teardowns of brand new devices :)

I was impressed by class D power amp. Very efficient therefore battery life would expect to be long. It uses regular batteries too not a lithium so they can be replaced when a long power failure us experienced.

It would be nicer if it is rechargeable. Come on Retekess we are in rechargeable era now. Make a rechargeable smart boombox with DVD VCD CD MP3 player, AM & FM, cassette player, Bluetooth connectivity, NFC connectivity, USB connectivity, audio recorder to USB memory or sd memory card through memory card slot, auxiliary slot, RCA slot, HDMI connectivity, headphone jack for wired private listening, remote control, at least 9 inch colored touch screen panel, operated by Android, 5G internet connectivity, clock with alarm clock settings and many many more latest features. 😊

I could use that to play radio, cd audio and mp3 cd. Right now my only cd player in home is my PC, and sometimes i wish i could listen to cd's in the other room

i have the small pocket radio you also tested a while back from that company and like it as well. it has nice sound for such a small radio so i would imagine this bigger one would be even better

I'm not surprised it's missing AM. Almost all the single-chip radio ICs are FM only, and even back when AM was more common, and many portable MP3 players came with radios, they were also FM-only.

Ford just announced that the new mustang has no am radio. For me that's a deal breaker. I listen to am more than FM in the car.

@@12voltvids In a large country such as yours I'd expect you to need some AM support! I think anything getting rid of AM in such a market is just silly. I remember a couple years ago a load of noise about some Australian broadcaster switching off short wave. Basically they reduced their service to the big cities. Why nobody is pushing for digital AM radio I have no idea. It works find over shortwave!

Not too bad for a boombox. I wish it had some better speakers like those high efficiency drivers that are inside of Bluetooth speakers, one of the larger ones. I know I had an ihome speaker that had separate speaker boxes for improved quality

Do those drivers have foam suspension? If they do that should improve the sound over paper ripple suspension.

No AM radio maybe because the switch-mode PSU would make too much interference.

I would use USB all the time, however, it is in a place it could get damaged like you said. I have been asking them to put a USB in radios/boom-boxes etc for a long time. Just a shame they didn't have a recessed bit for the USB, so you could plug it in vertically or with that unit, right inside, there is plenty of room inside. Now for the UK, it would be wonderful if it had FM and DAB radio, CD, plus USB, B.T. as it can be used as an amplifier. It might also be improved if it had larger speakers, it just sounded a bit tinny on your video, however, in rear life it might not be the case. I just like to hear a bit of bass when playing music. I do not have a Hi-fi these days in the house.

The solution to the USB sticking out is to use the stubby usb stick that only sticks out about 1/4"

@@BoB4jjjjs they are cheap enough. Just pick one up and make a backup. My music collection is backed up on 2 hard drives and Blu-ray disks as well as flash cards and USB sticks. Can't have too many backups as when dealing with digital storage it can be gone in a flash. Pun intended.

It's not bad. More than good enough for a portable radio and the CD player is bloody awesome. It was impossible to get it to skip. No remote but really who needs a remote on a boom box. This is something to take to take to the beach or back yard to listen to tunes on.

@@sdjgfashjasbfasd There are plenty of BT speakers available. The selling feature on this is the CD player. BT is also a bonus. Personally I wouldn't use BT because I don't stream from my phone, and don't have any music on my phone. That's why I used that old blackberry to demo because my cell has noting on it to play. My battery dies fast enough as it is without using it as a music player. For me my phone is a communication device for email and phone calls. All my music is on memory cards and CDs.

Bucket o Ghineseiun squeak box CRAP!... But hey Dave ya a gotta do "review / teardown" cuz it's free HA! Don't think I.m bitter cuz I'm not but really Ghineseium low grade crap, my suggestion is to isolate the speakers air tight & add sound deadening around them to improve bass cuz it's a plastic box so I highly doubt the bottom end goes below150-125Hz.

Is there music search on the CD if you hold button?

Do you know of anyone I could consult with to discuss a no sound repair of a Sony zx66i? I need some guidance on what I'm overlooking. 😳I have not had any success with related online forums. I'm more into power supplies, tv's, control boards, some Bose products and other electronics, but wanted to give this repair a shot to try to advance my knowledge - I've been encouraged/entertained watching your vids and have much respect for your years of specialized skill in audio repairs.👍 It is a field unto itself.

Heh, my first though on seeing the USB stick protruding g from the side was 'that's going to get knocked and bent / snapped off'. But then, like you say, who really uses USB drives anymore? I've seen a lot of people review this Retekiss stuff on KZread - Recordology seems especially fond of their little radios and portable CD players. 30 seconds anti-skip seems about right, I think that was standard for the 'discman' type players in the 90s and they're probably using a standard CD mech designed with those applications in mind.

How is the bass? Any specifications on frequency response? Edit: I just got to the part where you said it had good sound quality.

Yes. 5 volts 500 mA so standard USB charger. Needs to be in USB mode however so no music while charging.

Sure is. Running BBOS-10. Lived tgat phone at work. I have a collection of them in a drawer as they handed me a new one every time anew one came out.

interesting to see inside one like that. This is a look that to me is not pretty and looks very cheap! low quality! quite similar to Philips CD player AZB600/12 sony MODEL CFD-E75 sony cfds50 very low quality!
