Don’t feel bad about this test. I am a Brit, 79 years old, and even for me some of the answers were intelligent guesswork. 🤔 The “number of National Trust volunteers” question is silly. All the answers are “more than X” and if you choose the smallest you should be right. 😄 Yes. It is a poor citizenship test. Far too much like Trivial Pursuit. I totally agree with you.

the other dispute would be how often is a UK general election? it used to be no more than 5 years, under the fixed term act 2011 it was made 5 years, so technichally the correct answer is 5 years; however since 2010 we have had 3 general elections so the answer is incorrect.

I got one correct answer less than you in the first test, as a Scot, history has a greater leaning towards Scottish history so that's my excuse! The second test seamed much harder, and we were sort of even. Some of the Questions particularly on 2 had little to do with Citizenship.

As someone who worked in a shop in England there's a sort of mentality that because we don't see enough Scottish notes it's difficult to spot a forgery from a genuine one. Again that's just my experience of it.

As a native-born Brit, there are far too many "trivia" questions, which no-one really needs to know (and many don't) and far too few about daily life, some important laws and expectations of how to behave. Q19 in that 2nd test, about Russian Jews, should have said "to escape "PERSECUTION" not "PROSECUTION." It's a poor test when they can't even ask the question correctly. And Q22 in that same test - the National Health SYSTEM?? Really? When every Brit knows it's the National Health SERVICE!! Was it called "System" in 1948? Who cares? It's irrelevant!

This is off this topic but I just watched your video from 10 months ago reacting to mean comments. You handled them beautifully by so coolly dismissing them without being mean yourself. With an undercurrent of humour. One issue brought up that I’ve always found weird that UK does is having dirty clothes in the kitchen!! As an Aussie I usually find UK cultural habits usually closest to us, but not this. Or in a bathroom. We have separate laundry room. I really like Scandinavian countries which have large drying rooms (in houses anyway). Love comparisons of how things are done in different countries. Thanks you for your contribution in doing this.

Yeah the banknote one is fun - mostly because almost nobody has any idea what 'legal tender' actual means. It has a very specific meaning and has nothing whatsoever to do with if your banknotes are acceptable for use in a shiop. Like the BoE website says, a shopkeeper can just as validly refuse to allow you buy a stick of chewing gum with a £50 note as then can refuse to accept a Scottish bank note (or an English one) if they wish. Whether or not they have a good reason todo so is another matter (they don't).

TEST 1. Q1: there is constant battle between Britain and France, if you hadn't noticed; Q5: Scottish bank notes are NOT legal tender anywhere in the UK, even in Scotland, for that matter. They are, however valid, in the sense that the banks which issue them are legally obliged to pay the bearer their face value (in Bank of England notes), if they are presented at one of their branches. Nearly all of these, of course, are in Scotland. Banks in the other countries will accept them as a deposit to a customer's account, but they will only change them at the counter subject to a fee, and will never, ever, issue them. They are not practically valid for use as money, though, outside Scotland. They can, and are, frequently, and perfectly properly, refused; Q19: what an utterly stupid question, but I suppose it might have been designed to catch out the complete numpties; Q19: smoking in a public place is not an offence - the health fascists have not succeeded in making this one so far. TEST2. Q6: technically, WW1 lasted for nearer five years, rather than a little over 4. Hostilities lasted (for the UK) from 4th August 1914 to 11th November 1918, although peace did not officially occur until the Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28th June 1919, and even that did not become effective until 1920; Q24: No, the answer is wrong. The question relates to Q5 in test 1. Firstly, Scottish bank notes in circulation go up to £100, not £50, which is the highest denomination of Bank of England note in circulation. Moreover, in the case of Bank of England notes, there are others not in circulation. The highest denomination printed Bank of England note of any type is the Titan, which has a face value of £100,000,000. These each have to be signed personally by the Chief Cashier, but once that has been done, they are legal tender. However, they are only created because, by law, the banks which issue their own notes in Scotland and Northern Ireland can only do so if they physically have, on deposit at the Bank of England, cash to the same value as that which they issue. It would be very tedious were this all kept in fivers and pound coins.

It is widely accepted in England at the shop keepers discretion, but mostly because it is believed. but I work for HMT and can confirm it is not legal tender in England, sorry.

So at the end of all that you demonstrated the appropriate British attitude to the British citizenship test :) And if there is one take away it is that you should try reading modern translations of Beowulf and of Canterbury Tales (or at least a couple of them). These will tell you that the English have enjoyed ripping yarns (Beowulf) and bawdy satire (Canterbury Tales) for a very long time. I cannot guarantee that you would enjoy them, but I suspect you might.

I’d quibble over that one about the last battle fought with France, because the Royal Navy was sent to sink a bunch of French warships after the fall of France in 1940 to stop them potentially being taken by the Nazis. Okay, it was Vichy France at the time, but fire was exchanged by both sides and there were casualties, mostly French sailors who not surprisingly weren’t expecting an attack from an ally. It was smoothed over afterwards what with the Nazis being a bigger issue but it was a short battle. And that second test was absolutely ridiculous. I was shouting BEOWULF at the screen but really I’d let you off a lot of those because it really is just trivia. Could be worse though. The Australian citizenship test used to have a question about what Rolf Harris is famous for. They stopped using that one.

Well done! You probably would have beaten most of the young people under the age of 18 years, who were mostly born in UK and were brought up with our education system, based on many, many conversations about British history with them. The other point is that there were only a couple of questions that I would have considered as appropriate for a citizen test. I assume that this test was instigated by our demonstrably inept Home Office? Citizenship questions should be about customs, practice and structure of the Country so that any would be citizen understands what they are getting into.

Neither Scottish nor N. Irish banknotes are legal tender - not even in their respective countries. This is because they are issued by commercial banks and not a central bank i.e Bank of England, U.S Federal reserve etc. Ultimately it doesn't actually matter though and those people who give you a hard time in England are just being dicks.

Technically, for the National Trust question: More than 61'000 would have been true for any of the other answers as well... Not sure if I agree with you on the importance of historical facts. Yeah, years aren't that important as long as you have the sequence about right. But, given the importance of the UK in bringing democracy to the world, knowing that the roundheads were the parlamentary forces during the civil war and thus hardly were the forces of the king is kinda relevant. Ditto the things surrounding the Norman invasion. As for the war of the roses: you at least narrowed it down the the two relevant houses I guess I can forgive you for picking the wrong one. And then, being the linguistics nerd that I am, I cried a little about you not knowing about Beowulf. IIRC it is the oldest piece of English literature that we have. And frankly, that this generation is not aware about the years of WW I is a bit shocking to me. Yes, it's just about years. But this was such a devastating event for the world, poppies still have their role. (If you want to be moved to tears, go listen to Eric Bogle. 'No Mans Land/Green Fields of France/Willie McBride' and 'And the Band played Waltzing Matilda' are master works, and should be mandatory listening to any human being.) for the Record: I am not English (Swiss), but took kind of an interest in English history.

Willy, Willy, Harry, Ste, Harry, Dick, John, Harry three, One, two three Ned's, Richard two, Harry's four, five, six then who? Edwards four, foive, Dick the bad, Harry's twain then Ned the lad, Mary, Bessy, James the vain, Charlie, Charlie, James again, William and Mary, Anna gloria, Four Georges, William, Victoria, Edward, George then Ned the eighth, Quickly goes and abdicateth, This leads to George the Liz the second, And next is Charlie, or so 'tis reconned. And that's the way our monarchs lie, since Harold got it in the eye! All off the top of my head! Lady Jane grey goes in between lines 6 and 7, and Oliver Cromwell goes between the two Charlie's in line 8.

This was just random trivia that seems hardly relevant to a britishness test. Surely they can come up with better questions than these that are more relevant to daily life in Britain and how to navigate the society we live on an everyday basis. Suspect that 'pass' guides have covered all the bases that were sensible. Perhaps situational questions might be better. Eg what do you do if your neighbours Leylandi is too big?

Not bad for a Yank:) Just kidding, why torture yourself by retaking a test you already passed when it really mattered? You're here now so enjoy it. Btw, I was born and raised here 71 years ago and I failed the 2nd attempt. Shame on me, but applauding you.

The test is crap, largely totally irrelevant. I'm 70 and count my general knowledge as good, but I couldn't answer all these questions. How it helps you as a prospective citizen to know things like how many work for The National Trust escapes me. I would guess that close to all Brits don't know either.

Like others are saying, I'm a Brit, lived in England all my life and had to guess a good few of these, often not correctly either, so I was giving you a free pass on most of them, but Braveheart, really, lol? :o A lot of the questions are pretty pointless in the context of the test anyway but I know you were just pretending to not know to make the video more interesting ;)

Well they don't want too many people passing the test so they ask ridiculous questions that not many people, even in GB, would know!!!

You have my sympathy. I did rather better than you, but a lot of these questions are more appropriate to "Trivial Pursuit" than to teaching people to function as a British subject in 2022. If you watched a lot of old black & white films on Sunday afternoons in the 1960s and spent your childhood immersed in Arthur Mee's Childrens' Encyclopaedia it's a doddle!

Some time ago I said I would look at your videos in depth. I have, many. Are you fit to be considered British ? I would say so, not because of these tests but your general outlook on life and us British. We are so very different from Americans, I could say why but you would delete this comment. I don't like the way Amerca is going , or us come to that. I'm English first, Britsh second. As Cecil Rhodes (founder of Rhodesia) once said 'Always remember that be born English is to win first place in the lottery of life'. Sadly times change - a bit. You'll do.

These questions are total nonsense, and have nothing to do with knowing the British way of life. It is all about the Home Office (prop. Priti Patel, daughter of Ugandan refugees/immigrants) making it difficult for newcomers. 95% of Brits would fail. This is not an anti immigrant comment - it's an anti Priti Patel comment

One of the questions shown was itself incorrect as there is no Welsh Assembly it is the Senedd or Welsh Government. Have to say all the questions are very England based, especially those relating to other parts of the UK.

Technically it's the Welsh Parliament or Senedd Cymru, but Welsh Assembly is common. Welsh Government is not correct, though I have heard it very occasionally referred to as Welsh Assembly Government.

@@_starfiend Hi thought I saw the legislation show Senedd Cymru or Welsh Government but Welsh Parliament rings a bell, so accept my error there, even though that's (Welsh Parliament) only in there for the English press really.
