Restoring Vintage Craftsman Bandsaw | A Detailed Rebuild

Bringing back to life a 1950 Craftsman King Seeley bandsaw. This guy needed a good cleaning, replacement tires, replacement blade, replacement guide blocks, and some overall TLC. But in the end, works phenomenally and should last another 70 years.
Notes when working with and adjusting your bandsaw:
1. Urethane tires are great but can be difficult to get the tires on, be patient. Some instructions call for letting the tires sit in hot water for a few minutes to soften up but I didn’t have any trouble. Follow your manufacturers instructions
2. Make sure your blade teeth are pointing down, it will be very difficult to cut otherwise.
3. Get the right side guide blocks, sanding them down to size is not an enviable task. A good option is to grab brass rod stock of the correct diameter.
If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comment section down below.
Thanks as always and be safe,
Josh

    Thanks for the video. My craftsman is older. I dont know who the original owner is, but the saw was given to me by my father in law and he got it from his brother in law. The brother in law was a machinist and he must have modified the saw so that the top knob did nothing and was completely gone when i got it. It has thick corded rubber tires that are in good condition- no cracks. The blade guide shaft is round. Mine might just need to be entirely replaced. I did find some Olson round 3/16” graphite blade guides several years ago that are still good,

    Nice restore... i have the same one , picked it up at an estate sale a year ago and finally got it into shape yesterday. Wish I would have come across this video before I spent all day yesterday trying to figure out how to get the blade guides aligned (this is my first bandsaw). You kind of glossed over how to set up the thrust roller, and this is what really confused me for a while. The roller shaft sits inside a bearing that is locked in place with a set screw on the left side. This can be loosened to slide the bearing forward and back. There is also a second screw behind the bearing that is locked in place with a hex nut. You adjust it to control the depth that the roller shaft sits in the bearing, good for very fine adjustments. The top roller is pretty easy to reach but the bottom one is a pain because it's kind of hidden behind the table tilt mechanism.

    Thanks for sharing those details! It wasn’t until I replaced them with some new thrust bearings that I realized they were in the sleeve and was able to get them free. I am restoring a unit almost identical to this one. The lower blade guide and thrust bearing are missing, so I printed a picture of yours from this video to help me design a new guide holder from aluminum bar stock, although I am not sure with the thrust bearing yet, It must mount to the guide holders as I do not see any separate mount. I may just mount a bearing, but I have to figure out the front to back adjustment design for it. I do not have an original base and the motor on mine has been replaced, must have been replaced with a higher speed motor as the pulley on the saw has been replaced with a much larger version. I think I will just order up some 1/4 bearing bronze round rod for the guides. As for the table guide pin, I saw a hole, underneath at the edge which appears to be for a guide pin or screw, I will have to see if that is threaded or how that works.

  • @NorthwestCraftsman

    @NorthwestCraftsman

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sounds like a solid plan all around. Unless I'm misunderstanding what config yours came in, you may look at some ready made bearings instead of the OEM thrust plates. I swapped over to the following and will never go back. Thrust Bearings: amzn.to/2ShOXal Also make sure you have a good blade, my cheap blade that I got initially was so dull, it overused my original thrust plates and sheared the head right off. Good luck!

  • @richhagenchicago

    @richhagenchicago

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@NorthwestCraftsman Thank you for the information on the thrust bearing, I have a few containers of various sized roller bearings, so if I can figure out how to mount them to a shaped piece such that I can adjust them in the x and y directions for the guides and one for the thrust I may do that, though that is seeming more like a bigger project than I had intended. I have new blades and new tires, the new tires are polyurethane and the old probably were rubber, but there were none on it when I got it, the blade was mounted to bare metal pulleys. I think that blade that came with it is toast as a result as the teeth are now mostly in line with each other. The machine could not have been working well as it was. I ordered new blades. The motor and pulley were not original and probably running at a much slower speed due to the pulley on the machine being about twice the diameter of what would have originally been there, but I have yet to power it up at this point without tires in particular and the missing blade guide. I plan to change out all of the pulleys and mount two on the motor so that I can change speed between fast for wood and slow for a metal blade to cut some metal, though this machine is not set up to handle cutting fluids. The blade feet per minute needs to be much slower for metal cutting. While it is going to be more work than I planned when I purchased this machine, everything is reasonably well made and is serviceable so hopefully this 70 year old machine will last another lifetime when I am done with it.

    Thanks for the video. I am putting together a similar craftsman bandsaw to this, but after ordering an 80" blade, I couldn't seem to install it as it was too tight to fit over the top wheel unless i took off the top adjustment spring and even then, I could barely get the adjustment bolt threaded back on. Is is possible that some of these older saws need an 80.5 inch blade or am I doing something wrong?

  • @NorthwestCraftsman

    @NorthwestCraftsman

    2 жыл бұрын

    It’s possible! You can measure the blade length with a piece of string if you can access the wheels all around. If I’m remembering correctly, in mine, I have to adjust it almost all the way down, compressing the spring before it will come close to fitting and then slowly tension it.

    @@NorthwestCraftsman Just removed my table to clean it and work on the new blade guides. The table alignment screw is threaded to 5/16-18, which is the same size as the 4 mounting screws as well. Probably simplified manufacturing so they just had one size hole to tap on the underside there. Probably tapped it prior to cutting the slit and machining the insert hole for the blade. Simple, but robust, I think I will find a winged screw or make a thumb screw for that one. I could turn one out of some cold rolled steel pretty quickly and I have a long bar of appropriate diameter of that in the shop, now if only I had a finished band saw to cut it to length. . . . .

    Josh, Nice video. I have a bandsaw identical to yours that I've restored. My only problem is that the lower driven wheel seems to be misaligned with the top idler wheel such that when the blade is centered on the top wheel it rides at the very front of the bottom wheel. The bandsaw has all original parts so I can't figure out why the mis-alignment. The position of the bottom wheel is fixed on its shaft by the e-ring, so I can't see how I could've caused the mis-alignment. Any thoughts? Does the blade on yours ride centered? I couldn't tell from your video. Thanks.

    I have the exact model you do, only problem I have is with the motor, it starts to hum. If I add a little bit of hand spin to it it acts like it wants to go and does slowly, then trips the breaker or whatever is inside the motor then I reset it and happens again. I pulled the motor off and without the belt on it’ll spin every time I turn it on. But not under load I guess you can say. The bearings and on the wheels are great and spin smooth tires look good too. So it’s not getting hung up. Any ideas? The capacitor was extremely dirty and lot of surface rust it has the old school flat style one. I looked up this capacitor but can’t seem to find a alternative one I can wire in that’ll work. Idk which alternative one on Amazon will work for it

  • @NorthwestCraftsman

    @NorthwestCraftsman

    3 жыл бұрын

    I think you’re spot on. If it’s humming then tripping the breaker it’s because the motor is bound up. But if it runs under no load, then my guess is a bad capacitor. I just learned this the other day troubleshooting another motor but the capacitor is intended to give the motor a jumpstart at the beginning so it doesn’t have to pull a ton of current to get going. I’d need to do more digging if that’s something you can replace yourself, or if the motor is shot because of it. I imagine you can replace it, I’m just unaware how. Edit: here is a great article on the capacitors in motors, looks like they have the same diagnosis. inspectapedia.com/electric/Motor_Capacitor_Selection.php

    I understand this is an older thread, but I hope to save some folks a bit of grief. Power tools from this era are nothing short of awesome BUT it is better NOT to use a capacitor start motor. There is little load on the motor when starting the saw and capacitor start is unnecessary. The saw is not designed for it. Over time the quick starts can damage the drive pulley, or worse, the lower wheel, egging out the center. Ditto for motors with brakes. Stick with 1/3 hp of at most 1/2 hp motors. Use capacitor start, higher hp motors for equipment that starts under load such as a compressor. I love working with these vintage tools. Happy wood working!

Unfortunately I don’t think I’m going to be much help as mine is both a different model or at least has a different tensioning knob and I haven’t disassembled down to that level before. That being said, the way it’s moving makes me think you might be missing a nut or are uncoupled from the threads at the base of your tension adjustment rod. It’s probably worth doing what you suggested (removing the wheel) to take a deeper look at the mechanism behind. If not requires pulling that bearing, I may do some more troubleshooting from the outside.

    I cut Aluminum as well. I have my blades custom made in Everett, Washington, Stellar Industrial. I'm thinking that mine are 96" X 1/2. I had 10 made as well as for my Harbor Freight metal bandsaws that takes the 64.5" bi metal blades. I used a big pulley on top and a 1.5" pulley on the bottom. Need to slow it down some more to cut steel. As it is now if steel is cut the blade is toast. Currently doing the looker loo to see how to modify the guides to use bearings instead of rub blocks. I also added a wire brush to knock of the chips inside the housing plus added a L angle guard over the motor to keep the scarf aka metal chips from sparking the motor. Table top needs cleaning. 🙂

  • @richhagenchicago

    @richhagenchicago

    3 жыл бұрын

    The blades for wood and metal will have different construction, though you can often cut a bit of wood poorly with a blade designed for metal in a pinch, using a blade designed to cut wood for steel cutting would almost certainly destroy the blade. Wood cutting blades will be on the order of 3 or 4 teeth per inch for this saw, for metal they will be more like hack saw blades with 18 or 24 teeth per inch. Steel is generally much harder than wood.Additionally, recommended blade speed is much slower for cutting metals than it is for wood, it varies for different metals as well, so you need at least a different pulley to slow the blade down if you plan to cut metal. Machines designed to cut metal also generally are going to have provisions for handling cutting fluids. I do plan to use mine to cut metal in addition to wood, but I am going to add some stuff to clear chips and handle cutting fluid as well as the ability to adjust the speed down when using a metal cutting blade.

    Olá Amigo! Eu tenho uma lâmina de 80 1/2 polegada no meu e funciona perfeitamente. Eu acredito que este é o comprimento do OEM. Abaixo está um link para a lâmina que eu comprei. (traduzido com o google, desculpas por qualquer erro de tradução) Wood Slicer Blade (80 1/2” length) www.highlandwoodworking.com/wood-slicer-resaw-bandsaw-blades.aspx

    Sorry. This is not a restoration. This is a function check up.

    Hey JD, I can't tell if this was for the original commenter. All that I did to bring it back to functional use is in the video. jpyolo isn't wrong that this is more of a functional check than a full restore but it got it up and running. Let me know if you have any questions on it!
