    Is it painful for you watching the original finish of antiques like this being removed and refinished? I have worked with many experts over the years and I have never seen such a thing. Cleaning yes, but aggressive removal and replacement of original, antique finishes--No Way! I have only seen finishes applied when missing pieces have to be added, but it is limited only to the added work. Matching is important, but secondary to disturbing the original finish. Stripping the original finish to refinish the whole thing to attempt to match in the new piece is just disturbing to me. I've seen this done by others (not experts) many times. I've even seen clueless people (supposed antique brokers) that had original fabrics and finishes removed and refinished on pre-1800 Chippendale furniture. It makes me cry.

  • @dlevi67

    @dlevi67

    4 жыл бұрын

    I may be completely wrong, but I think it's provincial French (which also would have used square pegs, fake mitres and elm) - the swagger and curls on the top rail, the side rails and the apron, as well as the single double-petal flower in the top centre and the separate stand are very French. I would have expected a Welsh piece to have the drawers in the base attached to the legs/feet, and a cupboard/dresser on top, rather than just the feet and rails in the base.

    Maria Richmann you’re very naive. Go to wintertur and see the masterpieces there. I know the conservators there and those pieces are almost all refinished in some form or another. I also know one of the magicians in the field and they will get million dollar pieces from Sotheby’s or Christie’s and fake the finishes so convincingly, that many times the new owners want that old crusty finish re done. Do not criticize Tom or any other restorer to make a piece look good again. You’re watching too many episodes of antiques roadshow.

  • @hopewalker5764

    Maria Richmann no because he didn’t remove the finish. He didn’t hit bare wood anywhere and was careful in supporting the wood and structure. He has been doing this for decades and has restored thousands of museum and museum quality pieces. Settle down.

I have learned so so much Tom Thank you for your expertise, and taking the time to make these video's and sharing. Kudo's to Ella for being there too!.

    Great job! This strange welsh cupboard reminds me some similar french pieces of furniture. They have been made, mostly in brittany, from ancient boxed beds which were no longer in use but had a great sentimental value for the families. If this is right, the two « doors » used to be ornemental fixed panels.

    Looks marvelous not just ok! The sound of sanding is somehow satisfying, spent time sanding different projects down to a nice smooth finish. Several thin coats of hand wipe poly sanded between each coat makes for a lovely finish. Perhaps it reminds me of the satisfaction of seeing wood come to life and a nice smooth finish. Not heavy coated nor shiny necessarily. Just the wood showing its beauty.
