Restoring a Matchbox No 70 Grit Spreading Truck that was buried underground for 35 years!!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I restore a Matchbox No 70 Grit Spreading Truck that was sent in by a Subscriber who said it was buried in his back yard for 35+ years. This restoration is much different than restorations I have done in the past.

Agreed on all counts. I'm tolerant of production standards that are "less than", since it's really about the castings, but I so appreciate the shows where the standards are "greater than" ... like this one!

I've loved Hot Wheels and Matchbox since I was 5 years old. I had baskets full. The Red Baron, which on different occasions was thrown across the room by someone stepping on the pointed helmet. I also loved the superfast Matchbox lines. Those huge tires, the suspension, and the look was amazing. Now as an adult that still loves die cast cars, collecting and racing. I have found that the newer castings are more my thing. The detail is astonishing. Especially Tomica, Majorette, Auto World, Johhy Lightning, M2, and the premium HW & MB lines. Yet while watching your channel, I have become seriously blinded by the much older Matchbox or Lesney models. Maybe because I didn't have many of them growing up and now they are so pricey I don't see many around here. We don't have flea markets here at all. In the southernmost part of the state there is a HUGE flea market. But winter here..... Nothing. Right now its 6am. The temperature is -25° with a wind chill of -55 to -60°. This happened after a 6-10" snowfall. It Is the coldest I've seen in a LONG TIME. Givin our insane weather, in 4 days its going to be 40° above zero, flea markets are non-existent. Sorry about the tangent. My point was that your channel has given me an appreciation that I did not have. Or maybe a better statement is you educated me on what these cars had and still have to offer. When your finished customizing these cars and trucks, they are works of art. These cars were built to last. Now a days the mainline cars are built a LOT differently. To A)keep costs down. B)by cheaper costs they can license more models and create more cars. I'm NOT bashing Hot Wheels of today. I enjoy them for racing and collecting as I said. But these Lesney models are really amazing. They had more detail then I thought they did or could have. The ambulance was awesome as well. I'd love to find a box of these cheap. With models not trashed beyond help but models that can be restored. I still need more tools to make that a reality. A dremel, and a airbrush kit is 1 and 2 on my list. But thank you for showing me that there are so many more possible options when it comes to die cast. You have a lifer here...lol. Take care.

Nice video. With the plating techniques! Excellent. That copper-then-solder on white metal is a good tip! My Grand-pa drove a D Series Ford flat-bed for coal delivery. He had 'Grand-Fathers Rights to drive as he was originally a well-regarded horse-man. A tip, if you want it, regarding the pitting. A thin coat of primer first and when dry, a 'guide coat'; any colour lying around; wafted thinly over the primer when it's dried, sand back with a fine grit wet-or-dry(personal pref. wet 1200grit then 1400grit or a soft buffing wheel) until all the 'guide coat' has gone or before you hit much metal of any detail. If there is guide coat left visible, re-spray with primer and, when dry, re-spray lightly with the 'guide coat' again and rubbed back with the fine grit paper or polishing wheel(That rubbing paste you use on the plastic may be a good finishing polisher. No?). Again, as you'll be aware, the detail will be a limiting factor, along with patience, as to how much of the pitting the final coat can cover. The 'Guide Coat' method of 'flattening' the paint was how I was taught back in the early 1980s, using cellulose paints on real cars. I dare say, filler-primers must work the same these days, if that's even a concern nowadays with so much plastic bodywork and 'crush zones' rendering more cars as write-offs in accidents. Scuffs and pitting still goes on though. Anyway, nice result sir.
