MAN, that jam at the end was killer! Really shows that more money doesn't always equal the best tone. The neck pickup sounded especially good!

@@TheGuitologist Yes, I rebuilt a Japanese Strat and played it for years. I wish I still had that one. Of course I really did bastardize it by installing a Gibson mini humbucker right between the neck and middle pickup. I put a push/pull volume knob that swapped the humbucker with the middle pickup. A very nice Warm sound from an otherwise thin Strat sound. I know, I know, they have apps, I mean peddles for that. 😁

I always associate dual creams on a Paul with Ace.

I too have stopped trying to figure people out. Most are like broken cuckoo clocks. The little bird comes out and sounds for 11:00 The hands point to 7:30 And the actual time is 3:15 Life is just too short for such aggravation. Too many interesting and useful things to do

Geez, I thought everybody drilled hanger holes in their headstocks. I even drill them through my bagpipes and saxophones. You know, that's what duct tape was invented for. Get a Clue!! LOL

As a cigar smoker those holes are a necessity.

One thing I've started to notice with these overseas cheaper parts, is sometimes they're name brand stuff that maybe didn't make the cut to be on the name brand instruments. I saw a video recently of a firebird-type knockoff, and the bridge and saddle both had epiphone stamps that were partly welded over to hide the stamp. maybe those necks were made by fender but didn't make the quality control cut and ended up on temu

My first quality guitar was an Electra x 220. Sunburst. Got it for $125 bucks in 1983. I still love it and play it often. 5 way switch for in and out of phase and coil taping on both pickups. Super heavy slab of a body and a screaming hot bridge pickup. A solid axe.

My 1st electric guitar when I was 15 in 1978 was Electra X910(Rick Derringer model), the most rarest and valuable Electra guitar now. Boy, I wish I still had that!

The one that got away.

I have a Univox from the same era with basically the same finish with a maple neck. Had it for 30 years and it's still one of my most comfortable guitars to play. Great video!

Ive got a 1974 Ibanez Martin acoustic copy and it too has a hole in the headstock, I've concluded that the only reason for it would have been to fit a cigarette as the usual spot under the strings is too small to fit one.

Old plywood-bodies sounds awesome. I have two plywood guitars, and they both have insane sustain!

I found myself shaving a plastic backplate for a Schector & @ 1st I tried using sandpaper on the ground because the tile floor was flat, and then I used the rear of a knife & shaved the plastic. It was part of a knife set. Not exactly a steak knife but, a shorter knife in the set. It did a fantastic job! I finished up with the sandpaper, but the reverse side of a knife dragging it backward worked perfectly on the plastic action covers! I was not cutting it, I was dragging the back side of the knife & it was removing it in strips kind of. It was definitely faster then hand sanding! The backplate is now submerged & looks much better than it was!

To get that headstock really flat use a small block to sand it. Soft fingers will never get it flat. Lucky thing that the pearl was actually thick. I have a 1972 Yamaha acoustic on the bench with a broken truss rod and a damaged headstock. Pearl logo was a decal. That was a surprise. Great playing at the end, there!

Just between you and me, it was calculated that temu spent 2 BILLION dollars in advertising last year. With their rock bottom prices it makes me wonder what is paying for it. Got some great stuff from ali , though. Their business model makes just a tad more sense, although probably most would apply. I love the preshaped real bone nuts (smell like the dentists when shaping and everything) and fleor pick guards

Fact is, though, I've been bombarded for I don't know how long with all sorts of temu ads (although it seems most for yoga pants on extremely hourglass-figured ladies). It seems like one in every five on every platform I visit is temu. It's just gotta be a lot. Anyway, I'll shut up about it. Wouldn't want to cramp your style. Pleroo pickguards are nice too.

I had an old Elektra 310 or 320 MPC Les Paul. The sustain was unbelievable. Beautiful guitar! Elektras were great for the money. Gibson players hated me, lol.

I think even Sean would call this beast “scarred”. She didn’t make it easy.

That jam at the end was nice, I like watching other people improvise like that.

I use a block with the sandpaper to help eliminate the waviness in the finish.

I remember seeing ads for Electra MPC Guitars in mags as a kid in the 70's and wanting one so bad. Thanks for the blast from the past Brad!

The first band I was in, the guitarist had an Electra Les Paul. I was probably about a 78, with the new headstock. I thought it was the greatest guitar I had ever seen. Actually, it probably was. :) Thanks for keeping this one alive.

I've got an old Harmony that I've been wanting to make playable again. This gives me motivation.

The bridge pickup is an Ibanez Powersound pickup.

Another great thing Electra did was moving the tailpiece back a bit more so you don't have as much break over angle so the strings don't sit on the backside of the bridge

I grew up playing a Matsumoku made Westone Spectrum LX (198mbk) it resonated so much it tickled my throat & made me cough! I miss that guitar so much!!!! Your jam at the end of the video was spectacular! See how they have a way of bringing it out of ya! That is why I love Matsumoku made guitars!!!

I bought one of those thinline Glarry Teles and I just loved the neck so I did the customary pickups, pots, tuners, etc and I don't care what anyone says, it fucking rocks. It intonated perfectly with barrel saddles and what a surprise. So fast forward, I found a cheap squire that I loved the body but the neck was razor thin. Upon looking for a nice 50's style neck I said fuck it, I'll buy another Glarry just for the neck. Yes I did carve the headstocks to look "traditional" but man that Glarry stuff is not bad at all as long as you know how to level frets and setup and all that fun stuff. I'll take those two $100 guitars up next to any $1000 Fender all night long.

You can give a cheap guitar some love and time and make it special…absolutely! Prince’s Tele was a Japanese copy. He used it until the day he died and could afford any guitar on the planet!

Hello Brad. I also still have my first guitar my parents bought me for my Birthday. A black Electra Les Paul copy. Same model as the one you have on this video. It sounds really good for a copy. I’ve never took it apart to see each individual pickups, pots and etc. It was my first good guitar when I got in the early 80’s. The tuning keys were not in good shape, so I bought new ones. At the time, I was not thinking of type, just as long as I had tuning keys. Well, I got home and started working on replacing them when I realized I bought Fender style 6 in-line instead of the Les Paul style. But I made it work with the bottom three keys backwards. I didn’t care, because it stayed in tune, thereafter. Awesome blues riff at the end, Brad. 🎸👍

Front pickup looks really like the maxon used on my two morris les paul..with the big screws. lovely pickups really warm

Those Electras were everywhere in the late 70s, at least down here on the MS Coast. I had one, my first electric, with a new Peavey Classic 30.

In the late 70's in high school, we used to play those bolt on neck import Les Paul copies. One was a black Aria with a rosewood fretboard, and the other, a white Ibanez with a lacquered maple fretboard...I don't know where the Ibanez is anymore, but the friend that had the Aria might still have it...I'm still in touch with him, so probably going to ask him if he still has it, haha!. Thanks for the video, and hope you and yours are doing great!

We have a bunch of 70's and 80's Electra guitars in our collection. They are all awesome guitars. The MPC are really cool especially if you have a handful of sound cartridges for them. Nobody picks up our Electra Les Paul and says anything other than "Wow this feels and plays amazing"

Can’t believe how good the repair came out !! This proves most of the sound is in the fingers or expensive pickups are just overpriced. I have left Epiphone and Squire pickups in the guitars they came in and they sound fantastic.

I've found that about 85-90% of the time anymore, even the cheap guitars have decent sounding pickups if they're from a recognized brand.

You are on to some-thing good. I do know that "Temu" adopt the "Loss-leader" marketing approach, where the neck may have cost them a lot more to make than usual but they will make some excellent parts and sell them at no-profit to get their foot through the door. Well spotted Brad!

To level sand you have to use a block. By hand it’s always gonna be wavy

Very nice job Brad. I recently volunteered to repair a friend's guitar. She brought me the MOST beat up guitar, bridge pulling up, cracks in sound board.(It had been languishing in her basement untold years.) now here's the kicker, it's a Larivee!!! Mahogany back & sides, plus Mahogany neck. I think the fret board is Ebony (I can't scrape it, the woods to hard grain is extremely tight.) I wanted to slap her (but in her usual condition I doubt it would have any effect. LoL) any way I'm taking my time. You don't know how sick I was when I saw the badge. OMG Any way you did a spectacular job on that Nut & headstock. (Nuts ain't easy) I ordered a bunch of those unbleached blanks. They are decent TBH. Great playing too.(As usual) Blessings!!! BTW I'm in NJ (do they have Spring or Summer? All it does is Rain. LMAO but I got a sweet woman who has given free time to do my thing.)

Electra's were the first Gibson copies that I think I can remember in the early 70's. I think soon after Ibanez and Fugijen started making their Gibson Lawsuit brands. Heavy guitars decent electronics and some sick effects packs and switching options on the Top end ones. I have an old pair of MMK 57 pickups that may have come out of an early 80's Electra or Aria in the never gonna use bin. I always put a Dimarzio Super D in anything I own. Even in a Strat in SC form. Awesome pickup.

Lunacy. I just watched a Billy Strings rig rundown and he had a magnetic pickup mounted in a 1945 Martin D28 complete with a hole in the top for a volume knob. There's sometimes a disconnect between talent and rationale.

Back around 1978 I had an Electra, looks very similar to this one but it had a cherry burst? finish. The pickups were Chrome plated humbuckers like the ones you pointed out as original. Up around the 15th fret tho, on the D string, if I bent the string too much it would fret out. I used that guitar to record in the studio and even though I was aware that it would fret out, I still bent too far and did fret out on the recording. And that remains to this day. Oh yes I have fond memories of my Electra

For the beginners it’s probably a good idea to use a block for wet sanding if you’re trying to flatten a finish.

I'm thinking that hole in the headstock was to hold something like a sparkler a la Kiss.

I just recently aquired one of the new fender blues deluxe reissue amplifier to play on with my 2016 american fender stratocaster. Absolutely loving it so far, excellant pair! But am also loving watching your videos. Love seeing your knowledge with working on guitars. Growing up i always wanted to learn how to work on guitars when older. So its cool seeing others work on them and build them even as well. I loved your strat build video. Sounded great! My first guitar was an 08 all mahogany gibson les paul(had one of the best feeling necks ive ever played on) sadly I lost it during heroin addiction. But as much as i miss it i sure enjoy what i have now. A cheap ibanez with REALLY nice sounding humbuckers(no idea what kind exactly) and an amazing neck and fretboard for the price and cheapness of the guitar. Decent ibanez two point trem system, just wish the arm was pop in instead of screw in. But its fun to play on as well.

I still have a ‘76 Ibanez “lawsuit” bass, a Ric 4001 copy. Bolt-on neck of course, but the detail and craftsmanship is superb. _And_ , it sounds like a Ric.

Great job on the Les Paul clone. Sound great and the cream cream pickups kind of match the body color and the headstock repair looks great from the front.

I've owned a few Electra model guitars through the years and they were pretty good guitars

I bought an all natural clear finished curly maple Electra in the late 70's. Mine had a brass nut and had a neck through body instead of your bolt on. Where the toggle switch is located mine came with a five position knob to select pickup combinations. These were sold as "American" guitars by the St. Louis Music Company to guitar stores and had no external stickers or markings indicating their country of origin back then. I paid $300.00 dollars at the time and picked it because it was gorgeous and being promoted by Peter Framton who's live album was on top of the charts back then. Sadly I had tried two used Gibson gold tops in the store for consideration but passed because they were showing some age. (60's era guitars) They couldn't move the used Les Paul's for the same $300.00 dollars they were asking for the Electra's back then. We both know now I should have picked a gold top instead but there's no denying the fit and finish and wood selection on my Electra was better at the time than anything coming out of the Gibson factory. The other big mistake of my life was selling my 1968 Shelby for $2000.00 bucks because it needed a head gasket. I had no idea what these would be worth just a decade later!

That's been my experience too.

Can’t help but comment that most of the uneven levels on the headstock might have been accentuated by using sandpaper free hand. I imagine that if you used flat backing on your sandpaper you would’ve had a faster and better result. Having said that, you’re way out of my league as far as talent goes. Thanks for sharing this interesting project.
