I sprayed my canvases with water and used a hairdryer to dry the canvases and it worked really good and fast

Olga, you are ON POINT. I've been viciously emerging into pouring after 20 yrs of just straight hands on acrylic fine art. I was hooked, and AS I am beginning a new business of original and print art (really a broad spectrum of united underground artists.) Acrylic pouring seemed to be the perfect side income to keep business going while I work on personal pieces. However, pouring took over and I am SO hooked and CONSTANTly learning. Most of the time by myself as most of my scene is unfamiliar or have a very vague grasp of it. Thus, I've had some frustrating hang ups that are up to me to figure out. While I'm up for a challenge, your videos OFTEN times confirm some of my own (thinking they were my own) methods. This is EXTREMELY encouraging. I feel more and more "fit" into this scene when I see I'm closer to "getting it." Although, I don't think it will ever be got. THERE is SO MUCH to CREATE. Well, just wanted to send some love for these three methods, felt great to see that the ONE I came up with was the number one method. Thanks for keeping my spirit strong. 7/14/2019 USA Grandpa Bill: As Elton John sang out from the radio "Philadelphia Freedom" a desperate biker-artist in 197? carefully poured boiling hot water from a hot pot onto the back of his droopy canvas for an oil painting and let it dry overnight. The next morning the canvas was tight as a drum. S*A*M*, you are the first person in 43 years that I have seen who have applied water to the back of the canvas and shown it to the world. Everyone seems to apply the method of wedges. Thank you for the demonstration. You and your video with the picture inserts have been a real treat and I'd like to see much success for you on KZread.

Water technique works for me every time!

I actually (without prompting from any artist) began cutting the cardboard from my shipping boxes (I have so many because I don't stop buying product) and placing it inside my canvas' before pouring my paints. Glad to see I was on the right track without knowing what the right track was. hmmm. Common sense is my middle name! I'm thinking and buying more often than painting! Ha! Love your videos Olga! I did the same! I usually cute the cardboard out after the painting was finished and tightened w water dried then i use glue stick to keep the cardboard in place

Thank you so much, I learned something new! I had never heard of putting a flat insert into the canvas. I might try that. One variation on the water technique I have used before is to brush very hot water (just off the boil) onto the back of a canvas, and that works as well.

Thank you so much with your help - this has been a big problem for me, since I decided to cover my 12" X 12" stretched canvas paintings with resin. I was using an upside-down cereal bowl that was propped to the correct height to keep the centre level with my propped-up corners - very awkward! You reminded me to use the water spray & the cute little wedges! Much better!

I have a few saggy canvases and one that got a little warped (it accidentally leaned against something so it stretched out a little) and I am DEFINITELY going to be trying the spray bottle method!!! I’m going to start playing with pour paintings and epoxy resin next month when I move into my new home, I’m so excited!! I will probably use inserts at that point 😄

I always use water, but I haven't sprayed it under the edges, like you did, and I always have wrinkled edges. The paint usually takes care of that, but now I'll know to spray into the edges. Thank you.

Thanks so much for sharing this info. My problem is quite different. I made a reversed canvas sign using my Cricut maker & vinyl. You have to hot glue the canvas back on & my dummy self screwed it up because it now has loose vinyl in the bottom part. Can’t remove to reposition without really messing up the canvas & that’s what prompted me to start researching. I’m wondering if I can use the water method since the loose area is large or would you recommend anything different

For good quality like Amsterdam or Liquitex Basics average is $10 to $12 AUD for a 118ml to 120ml tune. Monte Marte is $2 to $4 for experimenting with but not as bright. Floetrol 4litre is $56 AUD. I will not let it deter me but will space out my budget. Lol. I thought of ordering the SAX paints but it would cost the same in shipping as it would the paint itself. Lol.

I am giving it try and using Julie Cutts 70% glue and 30% water mix. It works but not so good with a Dutch Pour lol. She did mention working with an Australian manufacturer on a line of paints but it has not been perfected as yet. So there is a bright future here in OZ. I’m sure Julie will keep us updated. 😄

I didnt realize I could lighten the canvas, so all the ones I have to tighten are painted and not varnishes, so will the insert and then the wedges. Thanks for the video. Gonna go watch the varnish one now :)

Just came across this video as referenced in your resin dome video. Is it ok to use any of these methods even after painting but before applying resin? 🤔 And secondly, do you have a video inwitch you describe how to neatly resin canvas edges?Thanks in advance!

Hi Olga!! Just watched your stretch Canvas video since I'm brand new to art. NOW I know! Tomorrow's my Payday and I'm joining your academy program online!!! I CANNOT WAIT TO LEARN FROM YOU!!!! Question how do I avoid getting on the underneath canvas when I'm pouring? So I gesso to cover the paint smudges or can it be gifted or sold with paint smudge? HELP!!😢

I use the water method the most...and can even use it after painting. I spray and make sure it's wet everywhere, then blow dry with a hot blow dryer. I have also used the wedges. I have tried the insert, but did it wrong, so now I know how to do that one, too! :)

Thank you so much for sharing this! Quick question...can this be done on canvases that have finished acrylic on them??

I pour resin and normally use boards primed with just regular old white house paint primer and it works great for me but my store was out of boards so I bought a couple of canvases. HUGE mistake!!! After reading through the comments and seeing the story about the old timer using boiling water, I knew I had to try this method. My canvases waved in the wind like albatross wings! I couldn't tell when I bought them because they were packaged together in very tight plastic and they didn't come with wooden wedges (although they had the slots to put some in) nor did they have support bars in them being 16" x 24". I'm sick with a cold and it's raining and a very cold 40°F outside. I didn't want to drive the 100 miles to my nearest art/hobby store just to see if they might be able to restretch these canvases for me either so I took the old timer's advice and boiled a pot of water. I am SOOO GLAD I TRIED THAT METHOD!!! Even though I had gessoed these canvases twice, they seemed to sag even worse than before. After pouring the boiling hot water on the backs and getting it under the frame all the way around, I dumped off the excess water and went to work with my heat gun to start the drying process immediately so the wooden frames wouldn't warp on me. Being careful not to set anything on fire, I stood there passing my heat gun across each canvas for about 30 minutes each until they were almost bone dry. The canvases are now pulling tightly on the staples and the spaces between the frames and stretch bars which was almost nonexistent before have increased quite dramatically. There's about 3/&" space all the way around now. The downside to all of this is that the gesso on the front of the canvases is bubbled up around all four edges but that can be gently sanded off and thinly reapplied without stretching the canvases back out. My husband, in an effort to help me, brought home 3 gigantic sheets of foam board thicker than my frames but I'm still going to cut out pieces to fit inside the frames to help hold the weight of the resin and gems I use on these canvases. I will leave the foam in there until the resun completely cures (3 to 4 weeks) so they should be rock solid and not move at all when I remove the foam pieces. I tried the cardboard method on some much smaller canvases but that still didn't hold the weight of the resin and they sagged in the middle too although they were very tight before I poured my resin on them. So for those who pour resin, wood is definitely the way to go but I'll let you know how this method works out in the end for me. I was just so grateful to find a way to tighten up loose canvases that I may start using just for paint pours in the future. I did a colander pour and spin on a board and it turned out beautifully. I will be making a lot more of those in the near future. Thanks for being so sweet and sharing your knowledge and great talet with all of us. You are such a sweetheart, Olga! 💖💖💖

So I have a finished piece, that I bought, and it has a round saggy part in a portion of the painting (around ~3" dia). Can I use the water method on this? If I do should it just be on that portion or the whole canvas? TY.

As my painting is drying, I have noticed it is starting to sag in some areas. Can I use the water spray method to tighten it up again once the paint is dry?? Thanks in advance

Will these methods work if the canvas frame is warped in one area? I have a 24 by 48-inch canvas that warped after painting.

Will this work on printed canvas sold in big box stores like Target?

My canvas does not have the slot for the wood keys, so I am trying the water method on my painted canvas. However, after a day or two, it started loosing up again. Any idea what permanent fix I can do? After using water, would spraying over an acrylic coating helps keep the shape of the painted canvas? I read somewhere that said fast drying paint will help keep the fabric stays together? Please help! :(

You said you prime your board with gesso or something else which I didn't get. Can you tell me what the other option was.

Can this be done on a canvas that has already been painted and has a saggy spot from something pushing it out? And can it just be done on that spot or would it have to be the whole canvas?

Hi Gail, I don't have a specific recommendation for hair dryer, as I use a very old one myself that doesn't even blow heat anymore, which is good thing now😊

I used the cardboard in the back method, but my cardboard slid down a little and the resin pooled in the middle. It was a resin pour art piece and it turned out okay since now the thicker part looks like the ocean. Thanks for your tips.

hi from Australia, i have a gallery wrapped canvas that has plastic wedges. i have pushed these in as far as i can, tried your water method to some success but it is still saggy. should i pull some staples and re staple it? it is too good / expensive canvas to throw. love all of your advice, thank you

Hi Luci, I think this is your best option to re-staple if nothing else works... But check out the tutorials on how to do it first, because it's a bit tricky. Or you can take it to the art supplies store where they do it, I don't think it would be too expensive.

This video is so helpful! I did the water method and was so excited to see that it had worked. The saggy canvas in my kitchen is huge and visible and I felt such a relief to see that it was finally flat again! But then after a few hours it got saggy again. So now I’m practically having to spray water everyday 😩 unfortunately the other 2 methods wouldn’t be helpful because it’d be hard to find a panel that big to put behind the canvas and also the canvas doesn’t have the gaps for wooden wedges. Any suggestions?

Add laundry starch to the water, not too much but just enough to do laundry. With the water prepared in this way, spray the canvas of the picture from behind.

It can work, but I would test it on small less important canvas first

But after inserting the wood little stretchers, you remove them later? As always you are helpful, but the final answer is missing, can you please tell me what happens to this stretchers afterwards? The water technique it is good for just pouring, I love it, so easy...

After inserting the wood little stretchers, you need to leave them there, so canvas stays stretched 😉

I am trying to find the video she has linked in her comments so I can see how she applies resin again but it keeps saying the video is private now. Does anyone know where it can be found and viewed?? My resin keeps having problems so I was hoping to get some tips from her video that I may have missed the first time I saw it…

I used spray and hammer method :) Can you please create video how to blend colors? When i paint, my colors instantly dry.. In other tutorials peoples,just painting 30min non-stop and can blend without problem...

Hi there, so with the blending it all depends on the paint. If you paint with oil paint, it dries for weeks or even months, so there is lots of open time. Acrylics are the opposite, they dry fast and depending on your goals and the technique, that can be a bonus or your worst nightmare. So there are few solutions 1. Retarding medium - it's a medium that you mix in your paint that slows down the drying process significantly and increases your open time amzn.to/2OzSMS8 it's designed for blending, so might be something you are looking for. 2. Open Acrylics like these ones by Golden amzn.to/2FNgszE pretty expensive, but designed for slow drying. Hope this helps

Thanks, i use Liquitex Basic , used also Conda student paints, but looks like they are almost identical (both dry very fast) I will try Retarding medium.. Because now i cant paint fluffy clouds

I'm stuck, using the wedges, I find that the corner pierces into the canvas when placing the wedge in, if I hammered, it's bound to pierce through, not sure what to do

It sounds like the wedges that you have a too narrow for the canvas and therefore go all the way through. did they come as a set? It shouldn't be like that.

Does the water trick work for both linen canvases?

I would first spray it with water and let dry, and then do the insert support at the back

Yes you can! Just don't spray on the wooden part, and make sure to spray evenly😉

All three technique can be used after, especially the one with water. Insert works the best if you are planning to cover it with resin.
