Restless Creature: Wendy Whelan | Trailer | New Release

Фильм және анимация

In 1984, Wendy Whelan joined the New York City Ballet as an apprentice; by 1991, she had been promoted to Principal Dancer. She quickly became a revered and beloved figure throughout the dance world. Wrote Roslyn Sulcas, “her sinewy physicality, her kinetic clarity, and her dramatic, otherworldly intensity have created a quite distinct and unusual identity.” Linda Saffire and Adam Schlesinger’s film follows this extraordinary artist throughout a passage of life that all dancers must face, when she must confront the limitations of her own body and adapt to a different relationship with the art form she loves so madly. An NYFF54 selection. An Abramorama release.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center is devoted to supporting the art and elevating the craft of cinema. The only branch of the world-renowned arts complex Lincoln Center to shine a light on the everlasting yet evolving importance of the moving image, this nonprofit organization was founded in 1969 to celebrate American and international film. Via year-round programming and discussions; its annual New York Film Festival; and its publications, including Film Comment, the U.S.’s premier magazine about films and film culture, the Film Society endeavors to make the discussion and appreciation of cinema accessible to a broader audience, as well as to ensure that it will remain an essential art form for years to come.

Had never heard of Wendy Whelan before this doc; never cared about ballet. Now not only am I a fan, but her final performance with her partners Craig & Tyler made me cry. Showed the beauty---& beastly side----of being dedicated to this art form.

I've dated two dancers, and from everything I've seen/heard, the industry is rough, I don't know why anyone would want to peruse it. It's not glamorous or fun or any of the things you grow up thinking it might be.

Yes she had but she is still so passionate and amazing at dancing.. I think she should continue dancing as long as she desires..

I just finished watching this movie and just felt empty and sad for Wendy. I know that she is passionate about what she is doing and that she is also very talented. What disturbed me so much was the fact Wendy had major hip surgery and tried to continue her normal classes, rehearsals and physical therapy sessions as if the surgery was non-intrusive. I wanted to smack her in the face and tell her was a grown a woman and to grow up! The documentary was so painful to watch as if a high school counselor had painted a rosy picture and hadn't told Wendy what would happen to her at the end of her career! Meanwhile, Wendy talked to dozens of people who left ballet-some at the tender age of 22-about quitting! At 47, she should have been prepared, because this day was going to happen no matter how hard she practiced and wished it wouldn't. That Wendy was somewhat delusional put me off entirely and made her seem like a neurotic mess! The snide comments from co-workers that she had gained weight and the narcistic apology of "I'm sorry I didn't come visit you in hospital, but I had things to do" made me not want to be in the same room with many of the people! No these aren't nice people and no I don't want to be around them if they can't drop by a coworker to see how she's doing or understand that a dancer puts on weight if she is inactive! I seriously wonder if Wendy taking over from Peter Martins-a known verbal and physical abuser of dancers-will make a difference at ABT! With the exception of the dancers, the entire company's ranks need to be sent packing because of how they communicate and treat each other: pure toxicity! I agree Wendy should have gone earlier! It would have spared us from this gut wrenching documentary where many people don't come off looking their best!

@@fredrika27 She's the opposite of a neurotic mess. She just loves what she loves. Pursuing passion isn't about being around "nice people." it's about going for it, no matter what. And pushing yourself to your limits. Personally, I'm inspired by Wendy. I think she's incredible.

@@pamelahunt6315 We will have to agree to disagree on this topic! As an educator, there is no way that I would allow any of my students to continue in their profession while harming themselves or being unhealthy. She may not be neurotic or even a narcissist, but she is in denial that her body is starting to fail her. She doggedly refused to listen to her body until she was forced to undergo an operation that most people have in their LATE 60s or 70s! That's not setting a healthy example for her audience and young impressionable dancers rather it sets the tone for years of self-abuse and denial. That's not being mature rather a lack of maturity and a failure to plan long-term! What's worse: if she did this to herself, what is keeping her from having the same unhealthy expectations of her students! She is to be admired for her artistry, but that is as far as I will take it!
