I have relatives just outside of downtown San Fran. "Better than its ever been". LOL. That's because what they value is the inclusion, as if San Fran was not inclusive 20 years ago. But you know what they mean. Decadence and filth and drugs has sort of become a hallmark virtue sign for progressive cities and they all covet that.

He said he was leaving and I couldn’t imagine why. It’s really hard to see these images, ones we NEVER wanted to exist. The echoes that are left behind. So sad.

I’m 3rd generation San Franciscan. My great grandparents came from Ireland during the famine. My father was born in 1903 and survived the earthquake. I was born in 55 ( yes my dad was an old dad). I lived there until age 5 and we moved because our neighborhood was getting rough, however it was just part of the city. I worked there in the 70’s and 80’s. It was really nice then . The city was crowded with workers and tourists, it was beautiful, my heart is broken to see it now.

Yep. I was born in San Francisco in the 1970s . My parents migrated to san Francisco in the 60s. It was a booming town and they bought a house in suburbs in San Jose CA. The houses back then were brand new and they cost about 22000 dollars in those days. Look at san Francisco now. It's a dead place.

San Francisco is dead. I am broken hearted that Louis’ Diner is gone. I called it the place to get a $10.00 meal with million dollar views. When I lived in San Francisco I would often go there mid afternoon and after my burger I would order a piece of pie and a coffee. Management would let me sit there at a window table and just enjoy the view for as long as I wanted. The most beautiful city in America is never coming back. Purposefully destroyed by design.

As a youngster, my mom and I would take the train from L.A. to SF -- she loved the wharf area and Original Joe's. That was ca.1958-1963. Before the infamy of Haight-Ashbury. I'm glad I can remember the city before it turned to trash.

The biggest shame of all are the Cliff House and Louie's closings. The landlord of both properties is basically the same entity that forced them to close - the US government. Imagine having your landlord taking away your ability to earn a living and then kicking you out for failure to pay rent.

The National Park Service is responsible for both the Cliff House and Louie's. They have selected somebody new to run the Cliff House and are going to be doing the same thing for Louie's but nothing has happened yet.

When does the commercial real estate market completely collapse? Landlords and general property owners can't continue to pay off loans and taxes on these properties that are never coming back in my lifetime. Scary where the economy is headed. Extremely sad but they did it to themselves. I’ve lived in San Francisco twice. Once when my family immigrated here to the states and then again in the mid 2000’s. It was always my favorite city and was vibrant and beautiful. I was back one year ago to visit and the best way I can describe it is you own a house you love but lease it out. They end up trashing the place beyond comprehension to were it’s not repairable and is a total loss.

They need to close the Mayor 's office and the State House.

I can assure you all that Leo has documented and shown us on this channel about the city makes every part of the city I fondly remember, The Ferry Building, The Embarcadero, The Union Square area, the shops and department stores lining along Market Street past the Powell Street cable car turntable, Mission Street, Geary Boulevard from downtown all the way past the Golden Gate Park, and likely countless several places feel like a dream. Can't believe it feels this bad to stay awake.

I pass by that restaurant (Louis) near the Cliff house every day on my way to work - there is usually some homeless person sleeping in the doorway. "Gown Now !"

During the COVID lock-down, restaurants were hanging on by a thread, and when that ended, many owners spend a lifetime of savings to re-open, in hopes that things would improve. But other neighbourhood stores didn't make it -- and without a thriving neighbourhood, a restaurant is nothing, so local restaurants began to close. That left the fast food restaurants, which rely on drive-by and walk-by traffic, so the city went big into street (de)construction -- creating car-less streets and torn-up streets. To speed up the emptying, legislators put through the wage hike to $20.00 per hour for fast food restaurants, and since most of those are franchises, not corporate outlets, the owners cut hours, raised prices, or quit.Ten thousand jobs were wiped out in this cascade of falling dominos. But it's not over yet. The vandalism, tagging, street filth, and lost quality-of-life that follows is the last domino -- and Metal Leo shows it all. San Francisco dining -- GONE NOW.

We used to hang out at the Cliff House back in the 70s when it was mostly for the locals. Then it got remodeled and turned into a tourist spot. Totally wrecked the place and all of Land's End. So sad

I just came back from Fort Worth, TX and I see NO DESTRUCTION in that vibrant city. People were happy, friendly and smiling. Stores were all open, thriving with people shopping from all walks of life. I went for a visit. to check for future retirement haven planned 5 years from now. I will be moving out of CA once I file early retirement.

With that ocean view and your restaurant is out of business, there's something wrong with the mayor or governor.

Not many small business can say closed for 18 months while still having to pay rent and insurance.

It’s crazy what’s happening in SF. I’m in Sacramento and I see a lot of empty commercial spaces as well.

Like NYC, San Francisco is also becoming a ghost town nothing but empty store fronts.

I almost didn't want to watch this one because I knew it would depress me, but we gotta support Leo on his documenting of the Fall Of San Francisco... Charles Phan's Slanted Door restaurant was THE best vietnamese food on the west coast, bar none. You saw how big that restaurant was, located on absolute prime real SF estate Charles Phan was one of *the* biggest restaurateurs there... That man brought in *millions* of dollars in revenue for that city, but the city f*cked him over by delivering a one-two punch of shutting him down over covid and then making construction costs for renovation so prohibitive that he not only closed it permanently but he also closed his other location on Fillmore, AND sold his house there. The man gave SF the giant middle finger and said, "See ya..." Thanks, Leo, for proving to the SF residents who come on here saying, 🤡 *"Everything's fine!"* that things are NOT fine there. You showed locations all over the city, not just in one area San Francisco used to be a premiere foodie town. Not anymore...

That already happens. A lot of the really big mansions in San Francisco are live-in drug rehab facilities. They are the only people who can afford it.

If I ever come back for a visit, I can safely add this to my "abandoned" channel. I visit enough ghost towns and relics of businesses. Now this is becoming one.

I've heard people echoing Gavin Newsom and saying, "But the $20/hr. law is only for LARGE restaurant chains." Well, here is why that doesn't matter: If you have a small restaurant and DON'T pay $20/hr, your employees are going to go to someplace that does! Therefore, $20 is now the BASE WAGE for all restaurants or they will go under because of no staff.

What they fail to understand also is that those "large chain restaurants" are primarily franchises; small business owners paying to use the famous name. So they have to pay for the franchise rights _and_ the $20 min wage. And, they're under contract with the brand and can't easily get out of it.

We do vote but the poles often close before we get back from the poling booth. Many more conservative people in California than media presets. Our votes are Gone Now! Trust me. I personally know people who are not citizens who have received a ballot to vote starting back in the 80s. This is the long game folks.

@@comeoncents3288 I vote R and absentee....I work all over the state. By the land masses the Rs are dominant. But in the cities......Bra we are outnumbered. I am not sure about the Frauds. My brother does those signatures for new items and they check EVERY one....Verify citizenship and voter status. They may get a ballot but when its counted they throw that sucker out. All the big cities control this whole state. LA and Bay area.....huge lefties. They dont read ANY of the fine print on anything and believe everything that comes out of that Governors mouth.....Every lie.

Actually, they don't need your vote. why those living people think they have more vote than dead?

On my visits to the city over the years, I have eaten at some of those restaurants. It is sickening that California politicians have helped with this decline.

I get so excited now whenever i see a For Lease sign.

Hi Frm UK, visited USA 96 and 2008, San Fran was my favourite city, just loved the ambience, was a beautiful city, SF and California being slowly ripped apart 😢, makes me want to cry, best wishes to all in the States, luv Frm 🇬🇧

Amazing! Almost every restaurant you covered I used to go to all the time and I know the owners of 2 of them. I actually did have a date at that restaurant on the Embarcadero but it was under a different name before the Slanted Door. It was a very nice date too. I went to the original Slanted Door when it was on 9th Avenue in the Inner Sunset. The Lucky Penny owners are my old neighbors. They were smart enough to get out of the restaurant business all together. The Cliff House is shocking! Especially since they've undergone a multi-million dollar renovation within the last 20 years. I liked that KFC on Duboce & Guerrero. Conveniently located as I got off the Central Freeway, had free parking with spots large enough to fit my 70s Lincoln Continental, then take home up to Twin Peaks. Phuket Thai Restaurant really surprised me! They were one of the oldest and most successful Thai restaurants in San Francisco. I used to work at Embarcadero Center and I used that pharmacy next to McDonald's all the time. San Francisco is turning in to what happened to Detroit.

The NPS has awarded a new contract for somebody to run the Cliff House. I have lived in the Sunset since 1986. The Slanted Door was never located on 9th Avenue as far as I know. I believe it was in the Mission before it moved to the Ferry Bldg.

Now it's bugging me that I can't remember the name of the restaurant on The Embarcadero in that building before The Slanted Door moved in. I really like that place too.

There’s a note on the Slanted Door’s web site that San Fran is re-opening late 2024. Ummm, I don’t see how this is possible.

The minimum wage going too high, too many taxes and regulations, combined with the rents always being higher than nearly everywhere else in the country...and residue from the 2020 lockdowns(companies leaving/working from home increasing)...it had to happen

Minimum wage should have been adjusting for inflation and productivity like it used to. We're now decades behind on that.

It's not just 20$ /hr for Donald's workers. Something much bigger is rolling behind the hill !

I know the fast food workers and the people who vote these minimum wage increases think businesses just gonna pay it! They just cut hours or replace workers with machines and the total wage cost remains the same. The only losers are the frontline workers 😂 😂 😂

Long time ago, San Francisco was the most beautiful city in the world. Now it is a third world hell hole. I am glad that I have left the city and California.

Eating out is too damn expensive. Let them all close for all I care. Right down the street from my house is a restaurant at the corner of green st and grant Ave. A plate of spaghetti and meatballs will cost you 25.00. You have got to be kidding me. Forget about it!

Surprising that CA legislators didn’t investigate the Fast Food Business before the increased minimum wage. They typically make about 7% operating income. You increase ownership wage expenses by 20% and now they’re losing money. Pretty simple math.

Anyone that believes anything coming out of greasy haired Newsom's office needs to have their head examined. The iron laws of economics dictate when a price of a good or service increases, the demand for that good or service (like minimum wage labor) MUST decrease. It's economic insanity to believe otherwise.

I visited SF in 2004, I fondly remember the ferry building where I could buy some of the best food of the trip while watching the boats on the bay. I came back in 2019, hoping to find the same experience, but it was already on a declining trend. I see covid and subsequent bullshit took their toll, that's terrible.😢

Very sad to see my beautiful city go downhill, but there are still so many beautiful wonders in SF.

I remember many times in my youth going to restaurants that overlooked the Bay. Always a great experience. Sad to see what is has become.

It’s awful when the small grocery stores disappear. Had one in my neighborhood. Yes it was a little more money for things. I didn’t shop there all the time, but the convenience factor…

The Lucky Penny is located at the top of the hill on Geary. Just were the avenues start. I ate there many times. The Lucky Penny closed soon after the "Healthy San Francisco" tax was put in place.

4:36 I have been there many years ago during my visit to San Francisco from Hong Kong via Canada. This really breaks my heart.

I live in Colorado explains the influx of thousands of people coming into our state are we next 😵

While underperformance is usually the main reason that companies cut locations in California, safety has sometimes played a factor. Both Denny's and In-N-Out Burger said that issues like break-ins, property damage, theft and robberies played a role in their decision to close California locations.

the only thing left is....drugs and crime.....but they did it to themselves.......
