Thanks for this Doc. I have been in recovery for an abusive relationship for the last 20 months, but recently ended a deeply codependent friendship with a very toxic friend who demonstrated most if not all of the behaviours and effects shown in this video. Great information. Thanks for posting.

Thanks! I am actually getting into my trauma response!! You are helping me 🔐crack the code. This self-sacrificing mind-set was drilled into me with my Catholic religion and the Signs of the Cross ✝ as a way to "DO" relationship loyalty. So my loyalty to God is to put others first, and this is the subconscious programming and trauma due to strict upbringing to DO for others FIRST. I was happy to do this for others, but did not realize that, as a child at least, I desperately needed (and maybe only needed) someone to actually DO for me. Children NEED stuff! I got nothing in the way of love and care from two narcissistic parents. For more information, please see my other comment, Doc and everyone. Thank you.

This really put into perspective how toxic to myself I really still am at times, I do so many of the listed behaviours. And I've let people in my life exhibit toxic behaviours that I let slide due to attachment issues/fear of loneliness etc Thank you for your work! You really are helping people out here! I just hope more people can discover your wonderful content. Only nitpick I have was about your definition guilt, I don't like the word "should", I feel it is inherently toxic (ironic given the context) Using 'should' in the past tense indicates holding on to regret in my opinion, or, not letting go of something or someone that did not work well in the past I think of guilt as simply, doing something that goes against your moral compass, one way or the other, very black and white. 'I did said action, I feel guilty, therefore I know I'm not okay with what happened/that action, I won't do it again" Easier said than done most days honestly, but I feel looking at it in this sense puts a clear defining line at the end point of that event in your life, allowing you to acknowledge then move on. As opposed to feeding your brain the "could of" "should of" rumination diet. Hope they made sense, and I understand it probably was a very generalised statement regarding guilt, I just think it's something worth thinking about for people.

Would it be possible for you to do a video on the effects of frequent moving/relocation in childhood? I’m not sure if you’ve made a video on the subject already, but I’m having difficulty finding many resources on it in general and your videos have been great in helping me manage issues of insecure attachment so I figured I’d ask. TL;DR is on top of the CPTSD from chronic abuse/neglect from highly unpredictable caregivers, the frequent, annual or sooner, moves (often to different states altogether) has left me at a great disadvantage in… pretty much every area of my life. I have an older siblings with pretty much all the same issues as well. We both often ask each other for advice and then feel hopeless together. I enjoy human connection, but have no idea how to make and maintain friendships, I dropped out of high school and spent the past decade working minimum wage jobs, making no progress in any direction and just existing in the background. I’ve wanted to move back to my hometown and reconnect with my grandparents but have always felt powerless to affect change in my life. Heavy inattentive ADHD like symptoms as well. I learned how to stop dissociating all the time and general emotional regulation about 2 years ago but that’s about it. It’s far more pervasive than that, but this comment is already very long. I thank you immensely for all your videos, they’ve been extremely helpful and validating, in making me not feel so crazy for being triggered by general human interaction. Even if you don’t make a video addressing my above concern, i’m sure i’ll learn plenty of useful skills from you in the future. 🙏🙏🙏

I recently got broken up with by people who exhibited some of these toxic behaviors. Invalidation was one of the most overt thing they did. I wasn't able to express my feelings about something they did without being told my feelings were "entitled" or without them making my feelings about themselves. It's frustrating, in hindsight, that I was attached to that group for so long. They were all I had. This video also made me realize how toxic I am to myself at times. That really clears up a lot for me. Thank you for this video, it taught me a lot!

Thanks for watching the video. Our brains tend to prioritize positive or neutral experiences over negative ones as a natural coping mechanism. This can lead to the phenomenon of forgetting or downplaying bad memories. It helps us maintain psychological well-being and adapt to challenges. However, the extent to which we forget negative experiences varies from person to person and situation to situation.

Okay so this was a huge issue in my relationship. I often felt like my partner was the center of attention whenever her family was around. Whether it was a cousin dad or brother. Especially those individuals. Sometimes around her mom too but not as often. I felt like ignored me around these people and made it all about her getting the attention. It made me feel awful unloved and unimportant to her and also betrayed in the relationship. When I tried to address this my partner said that it is because I am insecure an need to let her be herself around her family. Is it my problem that she seemed very flirty around certain people? And made it all about her? What can I do about this in the future?

I am in a toxic workplace. While fingers point to the biggest offender it’s also a culture. Narcissistic behavior…on the way to psychopathy are driving things. HR has struggle because these folks are smart and don’t pile up enough offenses to be fired. It’s been facades of high turnover and people working in silos to avoid. I first defensively fawned, then l asked to leave projects, not l am being asked to work with them and they are driving the boat…despite it being my role. I moved to a firm boundaries stance…it feels terrible. Still looking for a way to ride it out.

I would like to add onto, and maybe discuss, what you said about changing the structure of relationships. In your example, you said bringing another person into the relationship without your partner's consent is toxic, and I agree. However, it's important to mention it can be just as toxic for the monogamous person to force the polyamorous person to only be with them. Both actions are coercive. Both can lead to dishonesty, cheating, and a slew of toxicity. It is the responsibility of both parties to address their boundaries. It hurts both people when they don't agree about something as foundational as their sexual orientation. It's something that has to be addressed and worked out, or else both partners will inevitably suffer, not only the monogamous partner.

(I'm on the spectrum and still working on my majorly lacking communication skills, only recently - like, two days ago - realizing that I can come off aggressively when I think I'm being helpful. Sometimes, I don't realize I sound insensitive until after I've already offended someone, and judging by your response, I think I may have done exactly that, unintentionally. 🥺) I was really just trying to give a different perspective and context, because I know that alot of people don't know any polyamorous people in real life and we tend to get dragged on other media platforms. I didn't think that's what you were doing because I trust the info you share, which is why I felt compelled to speak up. Hello, your videos are incredible, I’m wondering if you can offer 1-1 chats? I’m desperate for help and have exhausted all help available in the UK. I have childhood trauma from the aged of 5 and 20 years later I’m still suffering immensely. I can’t seem to access your website and would love to get in contact, Best wishes xx

What do you do when a covert narcissist blames YOU for any mood they have but can't tell you that you are exhibiting any behavior that is actually questionable???? What about when they project their self-hatred on you????????? Treat you with disdain and disrespect in a Jekyl/Hyde way?????? SURPRISE ATTACKS OF RAGE!!!!

Dealing with a covert narcissist who blames you for their mood swings, projects self-hatred onto you, and exhibits disrespectful behavior can be incredibly challenging. Covert narcissism is characterized by self-focused attention, hypersensitivity to evaluations from others, and an exaggerated sense of self-entitlement. These individuals may also have socially destructive outbursts of anger, which can be difficult to handle in a relationship. Here are some strategies you might consider: Set Boundaries: Clearly define what behaviors you will not tolerate and communicate these boundaries to the narcissist. Be consistent in enforcing them. Stay Calm: Try to remain calm during outbursts of rage. Escalating the situation with your own anger can make things worse. Don't Take It Personally: Remember that their behavior is a reflection of their own issues, not a true assessment of your character. Seek Support: Talk to friends, family, or a therapist who can provide you with support and perspective. Educate Yourself: Learn more about narcissism to understand the dynamics of your interactions better. Consider Your Options: Reflect on the relationship and whether it is healthy for you to continue in it. Sometimes, distancing yourself or ending the relationship is the best course of action for your well-being. It's important to remember that you deserve to be treated with respect and that it's okay to prioritize your own mental health. If you're finding these interactions to be too harmful, it may be necessary to seek professional help or consider other changes to your relationship dynamic.
