There are A TON of dating tips out there... especially for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as Mormons). The emphasis on marriage within the restored Church may be a contributing factor to the tons and tons of dating tips out there, but whatever the reason for the dating advice, we decided to respond to some random suggestions we found online.
Sabrina, Kwaku, and Justin talk about gender stereotypes, about difficulties specifically in LDS Culture (otherwise known as Mormon culture), and about general dating tips for people of all religions and backgrounds.

    "Don't change anything, don't change yourself" is terrible advice brought on by modern culture of Self First. The point of a successful relationship is in understanding that you are becoming more than yourself and that it requires work on both ends to become two halves of a whole. NO two people will match perfectly, you have to be willing and able to change the pieces to your puzzle a bit and vice versa so that the two of you fit together- as perfectly as you can. Like squares in triangle holes. But instead of simple shapes it's complex patterns forming shapes with dozens to hundreds of sides trying to link together.

    I just think they mean the fundamental aspects of yourself like just be honest about who you are, what you like, your goals in life. But also be open, be flexible, be willing to compromise and work through challenges.

    I have to disagree with the compliments thing. Both people should give compliments. I give compliments to strangers at school all the time. I’ve been on maybe 5 first dates in the last couple months and only one guy complimented me because he wanted to kiss me, and then never went on a second date.

    I had a friend who went on one date with a girl and then she tried calling and texting all week even though he never responded. That weekend she showed up at the apartment with crafting supplies, and told the roommates that she was looking for him to try and make a template of his upper body so she could make a pillow of him to snuggle with. it was super creepy.

    The guys complementing too much, I had that happen. It was a YSA convention and a guy tried to spend some time with me at some of the activities. I'm not exactly good with social situations. So a lot of the subtleties I just don't recognise. But the one guy creaped me out. Complementing a girl every 5 minutes about her looks has a tendency to do so. I pretty much tried to avoid him when I could, for the whole 3 days of the convention.

    Some of the dialogue here sounds like it came from an episode of Happy Days. As in "how do I know when she's sincere about her affections for me?" and Ritche Cunningham: "I don't know Potsie. You will have to ask what her friends think."

    There are plenty of women who also don't get emotional with intimacy. So I agree there are many women and men who can go deep into something and not actually want to have an emotional relationship. Hold out for someone who wants to be around you a lot. Do not sell yourself in the hopes that someone will change their mind afterwards. Almost everytime they won't

    I'm a convert, I've only been a member for about 6 months, and I've been dating a member for almost a year. I've heard all of the 3Ds (date, dunk, dump) stories, and I've always been a bit insecure about her intentions with/for me. I don't go to BYU, and she does, so we've been trying the distance thing for a while. She says she loves me but when we got home for winter break, she told me she would never consider marrying a man who wasn't a return missionary. I don't know how to feel. I don't think I've felt a personal calling to serve a mission when I've prayed about it, and my parents aren't supportive of the idea either. I guess I'm wondering if she's just trying to move on to the third D😓

    J4ck, don’t listen to those fretchin putchurrs. The gospel is still true whether she dumps you or not. That being said, it sucks that you have to go through this insecurity. I’ve been played by girls (all Latter Day Saints) and I’ve had my heart ripped one too many times. So take it from me when I say this: Our best may not be worth it for the wrong girl, but even our worst can be worth it with the best girl. Girls are the worst; but if you wanna be happy with a godly woman, learn to be a godly man and she’ll find you easier. At least that’s what I’m doing

  • @jasonsellers56

    @jasonsellers56

    Yes, let me second what Arbiter said: Be the kind of man that your ideal girl would want to marry. People set their own rules on life all the time, like, "I'll only marry a return missionary." This is often done with good intentions, but what if God has different plans for them? We'd sell ourselves short, or set ourselves up for a major humbling experience, if we cling too tightly to our own desires, no matter how good we may think they are. Your girlfriend may or may not be heading to the 3rd D, but if she is, then frankly, you don't need her! That whole 3D thing is absolutely disgusting, and IMO very unbecoming of someone calling themselves a *Saint* in these Latter Days. So if that's what she's doing, then she wouldn't have been good for you anyway, *even if you had served a mission!* Stay true to the One who will never leave you, and He'll lead you to a girl you're ready for, and who's ready for you.

    At least you have a valid excuse for not serving a mission. Try being a lifelong member who didn't serve. It's a big sore spot for me (I didn't go because of lifelong health concerns and what I only recently found out was lifelong depression for as long as I can remember, so I didn't know any different). Yet it isn't unreasonable of them to want a returned missionary. For one, it's been put on a pedestal their whole lives. For two, it does have an impact on the person's character and expectations you can have for worthiness and life goals. So I don't begrudge anyone the desire to marry a returned missionary. It IS very common for women to marry someone else while you go off to serve a mission though, so if that ends up happening don't worry about it being due to DDD, it happens to many people regardless of whether or not they converted. But if it happens, she wasn't meant for you. Life sucks sometimes and we go through painful learning experiences and most people will probably get their heart ripped out at least once. Just focus on being the best person you can be and listen to the holy spirit influencing your life as you stay worthy to enter the temple someday.

    Yeah I'd agree with all the comments. And without sounding like the bad guy here, if you have the opportunity to serve dude you should really consider it. A lot of converts don't because they never had the chance. If you serve a mission and serve it with all you have (literally it is for God, you sacrifice a lot of worldly things to go on one) perhaps the only regret you will have is that you still can't be on one because the church and God makes you come home after 2 years. God wants you to go live your life etc. Church history, the bible, and BoM it's stories about missions
