Respiratory Therapy - Intubation (Part 2 of 2)

Be sure to check out Respiratory Coach Academy @ respiratorycoach.teachable.com/
This video is a walkthrough of the general concepts associated with the intubation process for respiratory therapists, including key elements of the process and common mistakes to avoid. The video covers gathering of supplies, using a laryngoscope and blade, checking the cuff, inserting the endotracheal tube, validating placement, and securing the tube. Coach also demonstrates what to do in case of an accidental esophageal intubation.

Great video- you mentioned a lot of tips that we had to figure out on our own as anesthesia students. I find it is also helpful on smaller airways to insert the ETT from the side of the mouth (tube is in more of a horizontal orientation) so that your view of the cords is not obstructed. Nothing more frustrating than seeing a great view of the cords, only to miss the airway because the ETT blocked your view :D. Again- thank you for all your excellent content. You are a huge asset to the medical community!

Question for coach or anyone who can help...Taking the CSE soon and having trouble when initiating mechanical vent...Do I go off the PT ideal body weight for Tidal volume? example; 47 year-old female patient who is 155 cm (5’1”) tall, and weighs 80 kg (176 lb). At 5'1" her ideal body weight is 47kg which means her tidal volume should be between 280-375 roughly?...Seems to low to me. not sure if this even makes sense sorry

IBW every time. And then go with the Vt and RR combination that yields a normal ventilation between 5-7 lpm. GO GET THAT RRT!!!

Don’t forget to not bend or manipulate stylet like some physicians do. Makes it more difficult to pull out

If the ETT gets into the oesophagus, can we keep the ETT, and then put another ETT blindly? One way is left, the trachea!

You have to take it out then try again with the same ETT
