Resistor and Capacitor Substitution Boxes

Ғылым және технология

My friend found a resistor and a capacitor substitution box at a Hamfest and picked them up for me. I check them out to see if they are accurate and what I might have to do to make them useful in my shop.

I was waiting for you to open the 2nd box, just to see what type of capacitors were inside!

jim one thing this could be used for in a shop is if you suspect a certain resistor or condenser of being bad lift one leg of the suspected part and put the box in its place dialed to the correct resistance or capacitance. if it cures the problem it is proof positive that the component you suspected is bad. say you suspected a particular condenser but you didnt have a way to test it you could check it by substitution with this box. im sure in the early days before the capacitance bridge became popular this would be a good way of checking condensers.

jim i would use a vtvm. i just dont trust digital. also modern meters are not recomended for testing the older condensers because they dont put out enough voltage to accurately check for leakage.

i cant read the color code on the resistors but also dont forget in the time period those were made it was common for resistors or condensers to be a + - 20 percent tolerance.

Complete noob here. When testing the capacitor substitution box, what setting do you have your multimeter on? Great video. Cheers!

have the identical substitution boxes they are awesome once you clean the switches and replace the out of Tolerance components & is your capacitance meter ESR? another handy tool!

+Bret H what is esr. when i learned how to test condensers i was taught to check capacitance and leakage and the power factor on electrolytics. never heard of esr.

+Thomas Stemmer ESR is: Equivalent Series Resistance. Think of that as a resistor in series with the capacitor...not a good thing. Capacitance measurements are often inaccurate because of high ESR (or leakage across the cap).

+Thomas Stemmer glasstronic is right for the professional I recommend the capacitor wizard rugged dependable expensive.... for the hobbyist there's 20 and $30 kits that are worthwhile.... it's a real game-changer to be able to check caps in circuit if you're new my recommendation is look for strangely misshapen or sweaty components they are generally bad test them first.....

i definately use the sprague teleohmike to-3. it has never failed me yet locating a bad condenser. as i never work on solid state i dont have any equiptment for that but what i have works great for the older condensers

I myself came here to see how to use such box's..and tho I enjoy all your videos, and im not bitc..... about this video..but I think 90% of the people came here to see how to use it..which did not turn out that way...

i am at the point in the video where you are just opening the box and at this point i want to go on record that part of your problem is probably a dirty switch or poor connection somewhere.
