Video Sponsors! - Big thank you to Junkahaulics & Design Doctors out of Vancouver, WA. This was such a special project to be apart of, the bark was from the tree trunk I used to make my aunt and her husband an epic dining table, this charcuterie board was a thank you and housewarming gift, the story behind this entire project has some super special meaning around it.
6 years ago when I started woodworking I visited a hardwood store in Chico Ca, and absolutely fell in love with with these two burned sycamore tree trunks, they had to be salvaged because a homeless group of people were burning the tree to stay warm. I couldn’t afford one at the time but I definitely saved some pictures for future potential projects. 3 years later I had a client interested in one, so I called back the hardwood store and my heart absolutely sank when they said the entire shop/inventory had recently burned down.. All gone (including the sycamore trunks)! Such a tragedy, pouted for a couple days but things went on.. Fast forward to last December when I picked up the redwood root from @gl_veneer, I spotted this piece that looked all too familiar at the top of a pile all covered up. I asked Daniel, DUDE is that from Chico?! He said YES, my pops bought it right before their shop burned down.. I was just in awe and came to the conclusion that it was fate, told him to load her up too!
On my way home I stopped to snag the lumber from American Barn and Wood in Paso Robles for my aunt's table, super excited to boot! I arrived home and sent her a pic of what my haul was but she noticed this sycamore trunk and absolutely fell in love!
Her home burned in the Carr fire a couple years ago, and after she saw this, she immediately changed her mind from the barn wood table to this amazing piece, the burned insides kind of pay a small homage to the experience she went through. All in all it came full circle, and I’m super happy it is in the hands of someone who truly appreciates a one-of-a-kind furniture piece like this. Now they have this amazing table and a totally rad charcuterie board that also has meaning behind it too.
Id love your feedback on this whole project below!

    I honestly thought that table base was a bathtub when u all first pulled it out of the trailer. That would b pretty cool though, an old tree hollowed out to b a bathtub.

  • @MattsWoodworks

    @MattsWoodworks

    It could have totally been a bathtub! I think the only set back would been sealing it properly on the inside, it was pretty burned up from the fire.

    Excellent table. I keep imagining what the table would've looked like if a nice combination of *Phosphorescent* paint (aka "glow-in-the-dark" paint) was used on the interior surface of the tree stump, such that during the day you can see every detail of the actual interior surface of the tree stump, but at night the painted interior will then slowly manifest itself to either show a really cool abstract scheme or otherworldly scene or subject matter. Either way, the table and the smaller piece (which is 100% my favorite of the two) were excellently done. Great job 👍🏼

    Great video, Matt. Gorgeous work. I was referred here by Blacktail Studio. When I saw your first video was with Bilzerian I got worried. I know artists work on commission and I don’t begrudge that project, but what if you were a misogynistic tool like him? But you seem like a good guy. 😊. Which matters a lot on KZread. I’m never going to build any of these projects. I watch them for entertainment. I also share them with my children. So both the artistry and the artist matter. Take care and good luck!

    Great idea! Question: Why didn't you use a torch to pop the surface bubbles? Are some kinds of epoxy non-compatible with heat? That's a fine product- custom, creative and beautiful. The finish is so glossy! Thanks for the link.

    Hey.. Thanks for the update. Correct me if i am wrong, you mixed the resin and hardener and then used the vaccum chamber and then poured the degassed mixture.. Right? I don't know if there is any way we could degass the resin mix after pouring it in a mould this big. For general knowledge.. What do you think is the biggest size mould one could put in a vaccum chamber? 2ft by 2ft or 3ft by 3ft? I mean I am definitely looking to invest into a vaccum chamber as well as a pressure pot. Would appreciate your revert on this.. Thanks..
