Resin 3D Printing Time Lapses with MACHINE LEARNING! (Elegoo Mars 3 Review, AI Flowframes Tutorial)

Magical looking 3D printing timelapses are all over social media these days. Previously only possible with FDM printers, KZreadrs Uncle Jessy and Andrew Sink recently developed "ResinLapse," a 3D printer add-on that makes it possible to create awesome timelapse videos with Canon DSLRs. But what if you don't have a Canon camera? In this episode, we create a method to make ResinLapse time lapses with any camera using a bit of Computer Vision, Python programming, and Machine Learning!
Thank you to ‪@UncleJessy‬ and ‪@AndrewSink‬ for inspiring this project! Be sure to check out their awesome channels for even more resin 3D printing content!

Thank you Andrew! I’m happy to hear that you like the video! It was exciting to be able to work some machine learning into a project! Hopefully it will inspire others to learn more about the topic as well. (This project also made me wonder about other intersections between ML and 3D printing - so many possibilities!)

Always impressed by your work. I love my Elegoo Mars. These resin printers can't be beaten, the prices are crazy cheap. I honestly don't print anything big enough that would be worth timelapsing though 😟

Thank you! Elegoo’s printers are pretty great! And also agreed on the quality to price ratio - it’s insane! Haha the good news with frame interpolation is that you don’t need that many photos/layers to create a long time lapse - you just need to be able to get a camera to capture the initial layers somehow. 😜

I have a question, if all layers in a print have the same layer exposure let's say 2 sec and the same lift time, let's say 1 second, isn't it possible to configure the intervalometer to take a shot every 3 seconds or a multiple of 3 and get a smooth video? I mean it will take a shot always in the se relative position.

This would work in theory, but there would likely be small millisecond differences between each "cycle" that would cause issues over a multi-hour print. However, an idea may be to determine what that threshold would be for a particular machine/settings and then "reset" the cycle by manually pausing the print and restarting the intervalometer after a certain amount of time.

@@SuperMakeSomething Yes, I believe those milliseconds would grow exponentially over hours print. The thing about resin lapse is that it exhaust your camera life because it takes 18 000 shots at a 10 hours print, most of those frames you won't use them anyways, so we need a better way than that. Your way is more hardware friendly but at less we can find a step by step tutorial with software download links included, it's not for most users, that is a shame.

It's a clever solution, but I've seen smoother videos, without interpolation, with a sony camera in still pic mode and an optical shutter trigger consisting of a photoresistor attached to a camera trigger cable. Since the camera is perfectly timed with the UV light activation, there are no irregular gaps between frames necessitating additional software for interpolation. All that is needed is an editing software, such as Resolve to import all the stills into a movie.
