Resin 3D Printing: Do Air Filters Make Resin Printing Safe? (Elegoo Mars Pro Review)

Ғылым және технология

The Elegoo Mars Pro is coming January 2020! For only $50 more, the Mars Pro incorporates several new upgrades over the standard $249 Elegoo Mars, and promises both a better and safer resin printing experience. Among the upgrades is the integration of a carbon air filter that promises to remove volatilized resin and other volatile organic compounds from the air in order to decrease resin odor and make resin printing at home safer. But how well does the filter work, and is the Elegoo Mars Pro a worthy successor to the Elegoo Mars? Armed with an air quality monitor, we measure the emissions from both Elegoo Mars printers, and make a pair of adorable Baby Yoda figurines along the way!

    Thanks for taking the time to test this! My first reaction is that all of those measurements look like they might be around the noise floor of the meter. As a point of comparison, it'd be nice to put an upper bound on what "really bad" is, for both VOC and PM. Like, how bad is the VOC measurement INSIDE the closed printer? And what if you put a piece of tape over the filter in the pro, so that everything is sealed in until you finish the print? I bet externally, the situation would improve, at least during printing. I ask mainly because I DO have experience to say that, at least with the PM measurements, 10 vs 20 ug/m^3 is basically "baseline." Simply walking over to the meter and sloughing off a few skin cells could cause that change, so it's tough to ascribe the impact to the printer without a long duration trace that shows it was clearly higher while the printer was running, then drops again after the fan is turned off. Not to say your measurement is wrong - I'm sure the Pro DOES actually kick out a little PM above baseline, especially since your measurement seems repeatable. It's just that 10 vs 20 is nothing to worry about, whereas an enclosed FDM printer might achieve 50 or 100 printing PLA at 210C vs 1000 or 1500 printing Nylon at 270C (measurement I took the other day). And further, since each resin will likely be different, it'd be really great to have both a baseline "ambient" condition as well as a highline "literally huffing the resin at close range, this is as bad as it gets" condition.

    By hollowing with infill and adding no drainage holes, you now have uncured resin trapped within your prints. You should not use infill on resin prints without adding holes for uncured resin to drain.

  • @1objection

    I know this is 2 years old, but just wanted to add to this. Lychee's hollowing is the best because it adds thin internal supports that criss-cross and allow for easy draining.

  • @SuperMakeSomething

    The Saturn 2 is pretty cool, because they integrated a "hose connection" hole into the top cover so that you can vent it directly outside, in addition to an active air filter that plugs into the base of the machine. Just in case, I would always make sure so maximize the airflow as much as possible, but the Saturn 2 seems to be their safest machine to date. So would you say the filter and mask is enough? Or do you think a grow tent and ventilation is needed?

  • @SuperMakeSomething

    @SuperMakeSomething

    Жыл бұрын

    I think that a filter and mask with an open window is probably the way to go. Overall, the PM measurements dropped with longer use, so the initial elevated reading did seem to come from the filter, but most of the particulate exposure was still from opening the lid to remove the model and transfer the resin, which unfortunately can’t be avoided. Newer machines like the Saturn have a vent line port in the cover, but at the end it’s still necessary to take the lid off, so I would recommend maximizing air flow as much as possible.

Unfortunately, I’m not qualified to comment on any absolute health effects, because I am not aware of any tests that examine how safe long-term exposure to particle emissions is, but I would say in general that more air flow is better. It sounds like you are probably being more cautious than most, which is good. Ultimately the decision depends on the level of risk you are comfortable with - I also sometimes print while I am in the same room, but personally try to minimize doing this whenever possible.

    You covered acceptable levels for particles, but not the other tested elements. According to a WHO study (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK138711/), "For the indoor environment (24 hours), a value of 0.125 mg/m3 was considered safe for the entire population against sensory irritation, including chronic sensory irritation" For TVOC, according to this report (www.tecamgroup.com/acceptable-voc-levels/) the safe levels are under 0.3 mg/m3, with 0.3-0.5 mg/m3 being "acceptable" So even the standard mars seems safe for indoor use within the same room, based on the readings you've gathered. Of course, you would still want to ventilate the room and wear a respirator to be safe. I've included sources so that others can confirm/refute, and if anyone knows more about the subject or has more in depth or reputable sources, please post them.

    It still is a logical excuse, i had a water bottle with a carbon filter and it is instructed to wash it before to remove residues before use. Its the same principle here. Only time will tell if it settles down or not. I personally hope so, or id be really dissapointed.

    @@Starganderfish I've been hearing that shit for 30 years working with fiberglass car parts. I'm still waiting! Your house hold pet puts out more voc pollution then that printer ever will. You guys have over blown the hell out of the saftey and clean up process. Yes some people do have allergies and weak ass immune systems, but that doesn't apply to all of us.
