Resilience Live Set : How I Patch My System For Improvising Live Techno

Here's the link to the Resilience live set : • Résilience invite dc11
If you haven't watched it yet, it makes sense to watch it first. Maybe.
I though it would be interesting to break down the process of building the Resilience live set with my modular and the Alphabase. I set out to do it fully improvised. I've toyed with the idea of using some samples but it's just not how I wanted to do things, and the little I've tried felt more complicated than necessary without giving me much leeway really. I've built my system towards improvisation, so why deviate from the goal at the last minute. In a way, improvising is simpler, and freeing; you don't have to stick to anything, you're making things up as you go. Thats also the biggest downside : what if nothing good comes out ? That's where having a strong basis like the Alphabase comes into play. I did not program all the drums on the fly, but had a fairly complete pattern ready to go with three different kits to tweak; enough to take a few seconds to breathe and find something new on the modular. I played the system a lot the weeks coming up to the recording date trying to find a patch simple yet flexible enough, forcing myself to continue when I felt I was out of ideas after 30min etc... It's good training and also... I don't believe there's any other way. Building "presets" in your head, having rough ideas of what can work and what doesn't, rough ideas of the different moods and energy levels you want to reach etc...
Anyway... I hope you'll find this interesting and I hope you enjoyed the Resilience video. I sure loved doing it even if it was a bit stressful at times, and I am very proud of the result. The team did a fantastic work and that's an honour to be featured in such a nice looking video.

    Thanks ! It's pretty easy, just frequency modulate the right osc with the left osc at lfo speed, saw wave works nicely. find the frequencies/mod index that you like and open you VCA fully, adjust filter/res to taste. Also the phaser here has a strong impact on the sound. Check my demo of the Complex Oscillator, I think I show a similar sound in a bit more details.

  • @shallowthenhalo

    @shallowthenhalo

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@LucasMarchal Merci pour ta réponse ! Ce sont peut-être ces deux légers effets stéréo qui me donnent cette impression d'"immensité", parfois dans un mix avec tous les instruments au milieu il suffit d'en panoramiser un seul pour avoir le maximum d'effet plutôt que de tout panoramiser (leçon que j'ai apprise du channel KZread "House of Kush"). Ou alors c'est simplement le son massif de l'Alpha Base qui me fait cet effet, haha! Au passage, tes vidéos où figurent l'Alpha Base et ton set Resilience sont parmi les rares exemples d'utilisation de cette BAR que j'aie trouvés convainquants et qui arrivent à en faire ressortir les qualités dans un contexte musical avec d'autres synthés. Je suis fasciné par le son de cette machine et régulièrement tenté de m'en procurer une, ce qui me retient c'est que j'ignore si elle pourra convenir dans mon style (EBM, Darkwave, Coldwave), où typiquement on a souvent plutôt besoin d'un kick très sec genre TR-707. Y a pas, faut que je m'en achète une pour voir par moi-même ce que ça donne :D Au pire, je serai obligé de démarrer un projet parallèle dub techno...

    There are problems with basically all Verbos modules. Which makes it even more absurd how expensive they are and the hype that he has managed to build with the cooler than thou Brooklyn-Berlin crowd. A tech person who knows what they're talking about once said the errors are not build errors, but actually design errors in the circuits themselves, which is indeed, a big problem, especially compared to all the great modular companies out there now run by engineers with a strong electrical background and decades of building and repair experience.

It’s quite weird, and for the continual number of people that have threads or comments about “my Verbos module does X when Y..is this normal? Yeah a 1604. Does the job.Most venues will have a Xone DJ mixer so if you can limit yourself to 2/3 stereo channels then you'll be fine. Mixers are impossible to carry around.

    Hi! is your overstayer always on the master bus, also when playing live?

  • @LucasMarchal

    @LucasMarchal

    2 жыл бұрын

    It is set up as an insert in Ableton so I can use it on the master but also on any channels/groups/bus I want. Super flexible. I don't bring it when playing live, except the one time for the Resilience live stream because I had some time to set up and a big van to put everything. Otherwise it's too big/fragile.

    Just by itself I'd say no... but you can do it if you combine a kick and a tom or a kick and Mbrane maybe... Usually these "rumble kicks" are very processing intensive so you kinda need a DAW.
