    13:35 - Resident Evil 2 actually has assisted aim in all its releases. Just open the option screen, go under controls and select a layout that says "AUTO"; done. On PC there are main modes that enable or disable it, depending on your own taste for difficulty.

    Thankfully there's an Ultimate Director's Cut patch the fans made to undo the questionable music and replaces the FMVs with the uncensored version from the PC port. There is a caveat in that it only works with the US SLUS-007.47 release of Director's Cut.

    Indeed, this is what makes the Saturn version essential for me, as the original music is much better than I thought it would be. The extra Tyrant, the "Tick", and the better graphics in certain areas top it off for me!

    The version I, or rather my older brother, owns is the DualShock Director's Cut, but thankfully the fans made a special "Ultimate Director's Cut" patch for the DualShock version that essentially makes it the best version of Director's Cut. It takes the half-baked music and censored FMVs out in place of the original vanilla soundtrack and puts the PC version's uncensored FMVs in the game while adding some other features. I would totally recommend this fan-made patch if you don't mind setting up an emulator.

    All you really needed to answer the question of whether or not it was still a classic was the clip from 0:26 to 0:34. Dat voice-acting makes this game an undisputed classic. Whenever somebody mentions cheesy lines in video games, what is the game that is always brought up? This game. It will be forever remembered for that voice-acting alone.

    Just stumbled on this video and channel on my ''random nights at youtube''. As a big RE-fan, this warms my heart. You pointed out the exact things that makes the original game still so good, important, and a pioneering piece of video game history. It manages to be the only game in the series to have no sci-fi, no anime-style action, no fantasy, no bombastic Hollywood-music and no unnecessary drama. It still stands feets firmly on the ground, it still plays really solidly, and still thrills people despite the age of it. It also has that sort of X-Files, Twin Peaks, and generally mid 90's vibes to it, which none of the other games have. There's also a touch of Suspiria in the game, with the use of different colours in different rooms and areas, that the remake failed to capture with its low saturation approach. Even thou I started the series with the RE2, these things you and I just said were the reason why the original game left me much bigger impact, when I saw it for the first time.

    As someone who has beaten RE 1 2 and 3, i feel that the game series still holds up. I was never one to complain about the tank like controls. If the controls were not tank like, the game would be way too easy. Controls are only an issue if they are not suited for the task at hand.

  • @khorne133
    @khorne1338 жыл бұрын

    Another great part about it was that some decisions (that are not made apparent) were not based on a cut scene or dialog choice. Prime examples are when you and Barry decide to stay on the first floor and you get to go through the blue door. Walk through then walk back through up to the second floor where Forest is and you get a cutscene with Barry being on the second floor and not the first one (which Jill calls him out on). Another moment is when you are in the cave network and run into Barry who asks if you want to team up. You can say yes then ask him to go on ahead or stay with you or you can just flat out say no. But if you say yes and have him go ahead of you there are 2 doors to choose and if you pick the wrong one you don't run into Barry and loose track of him. You don't get things like this in games now-a-days though RE4 comes close with that hidden scene. There are many "alternate" scenes in RE1 that play out like this and it's stuff like that which also make it awesome.

    Phoenix Down = Feathers. The soft layer of feathers under the tough ones on a phoenix. This only just now clicked when you spelled it out in the video fro me Derek. How I never made the connection is beyond me.

    The tank controls never seemed to be a problem for anyone until RE4 and 5 came out. ESPECIALLY after 5. Back then it was considered a feature that set it apart from other products. It was one of the selling points that people said was cool and solved the problem of navigation in 3D space. The reason people hate it now is because 3rd person over the shoulder controls have been perfected and feel more natural compared to tank style, thus people have a hard time getting comfortable with tank style when it's no longer the best technology on the market. The tank controls don't actually make the game harder, people just assume they do. The reason they don't make the game harder is because most of the environment is very narrow and linear, thus funneling enemies into your path. The Hunters would be hard to dodge on any control platform simply because one hit kill mega agility speed is sort of their entire thing. If you changed to 3rd person they'd probably be designed to have lots of twitch movement, parallel, and direct leaping. Another myth I never understood was Jill is easier than Chris. She's not easier, she's just more convenient. Even the assistance from Barry is pretty negligible. Early shotgun? Not that important when the only enemies at that point are the most basic.

    My first experience with the original Resident Evil was renting it when it came out, and boy was it hard at the time. There was no way I was beating that sucker in a rental period without a guide or the internet!

    I've recently played through the HD remake of Re1 and played through the ps1 version afterwards and both are really good in terms of puzzles, theming, creepy environments, great music.

    Fantastic video man :D i'm a sucker for the classic Resi series. The original trilogy was my childhood lol I agree with pretty much everything you said in this video and luckily for me I own the original Resi on PC (Big box and all) so I have the uncensored intro at hand. Weird thing about the DS port is the intro is censored but the zombie head turn isn't I feel like that was a mistake or something because I can't see that being intentional, and yeah Deadly Silence all the way for me when it comes to the original Resi

    I enjoyed the video I like learning about the games I grew up playing. I was wondering what your thoughts on the silent hill series is because I hear you mention it only a couple of times in some of your videos and if you played the first one around the time when it was released.

    The first Resident Evil was one of the first games I played in PS1 and I had no trouble with the controls or aiming. I also had no issues with the 'security cam' like views when you enter a room. The game played fine from a control standpoint.
