Review (in case anyone asks): I guarantee most of the praise this game gets comes from it's breathtaking first two hours. Scenes that challenge player conceptions of the typical video game come out without warning, shocks and thrills abundant. Despite a flat protagonist, our narrative is full of intimidating and mysterious characters. Unfortunately, this begins to break down after the chainsaw-fight with Jack Baker. Before the end of this boss fight, it seemed adversity always triumphed every tool at your disposal. Got a gun? The Bakers are bullet sponges. Got a car? Jack will walk off a barrage of crashes to dispose of your getaway himself. Got a chainsaw? He's got two. It could be metaphorically drawn that the moment the game gives up in innovation is when your chainsaw is disposed off immediately after acquiring it. Imagine what kind of impossible horrors and thrills they'd have to invent when you have such an impressive tool at your disposal? Maybe cutting off enemies hands would create new problems as an animated limb attempted to crawl down your throat and tear you from the inside-out. Maybe the deputy that was supposed to “help” Jack in killing Ethan becomes one of the manor's horrors, stalking Ethan and keeping the police uninvolved. Maybe you'd need to cut your limb off again to fight off the infection, crippling your arsenal to hatchets and handguns.
But in the end, Alma from F.E.A.R. makes a cameo, the Bakers become a disposable threat, and the game leaves you in pointless mystery. The Chris Redfield campaign could add on to the story, but from what I've seen so far, I don't expect much. If you want this game, I recommend waiting for a Game of the Year edition to come out for $30. Otherwise, find your thrills elsewhere.

I have the slightest feeling that you didn't have a very fun time because you were playing on Madhouse, which isnt supposed to be unlocked until your first playthrough is over. It kind of changes a lot of the game??

Yeah. I'm currently playing through for the first time(in VR at that) on Normal and I find it challenging enough. I debated doing Madhouse at the start of it but didn't want to hate my first time.

@@liamoboyle9095 He definitely was, because the basement boiler room only spawns a two-legged enemy on MH. Normal has three normal enemies. He also had two separating agent items before even leaving the first house, which isn't possible in Normal.

I rarely get jump scared but 3:57 made me jump into another dimension of anxiety.
Honestly, looking back at this game, I'm sort of in the same mindset as neo the beginning of the game was amazing. The bug/ boat House was alright, not completely terrible, not really good either. Then, when it got to the next part(I don't remember the brothers name), the game felt like it was really starting to just be padding and getting unfun then the rest of of it was alright at best but usually not very fun.(I'll admit though I really like the setting of the entire game sometimes it's kinda weird how it goes from a swampy hillbilly house to underground saw compound but i feel like the first time around the game can kinda be scary but thats mainly just becausehow dark it is)(I also think Jack was a pretty cool villian being both kind of funny and terrifying I don't know about how much he comes back but still not bad I think) This game could've been what Re8 was(the thing that, in my opinion, saved re) if it wasn't rushed near the end to just add more content and had a little more thought on the story and didn't use dlc to make game mechanics that would've been great in the actual game instead you have a bunch of money for some actualy cool things that would be really great entire game concepts but instead are either 20 minute dlcs or a couple of hours. Which are worth the money, but when your dlcs are sometimes completely different from your game and usually better, then that's a pretty big problem. Also, I'm extremely bored. That's why I'm ranting on an old video. P.S. I'm mainly talking about the uncle dlc with the powered fist(that dlc was badass. I wish it was a whole game.) And I think there are one or two other good ones but you get my point.

I wish I was as good at games as you. For real though, this game starts strong with the creepy old house and Jack Baker's garage shenanigans but it does start to weaken gradually. Not a bad game as a whole but it does set expectations pretty high out the front door. Marguerite doesn't quite leave the same impact as Jack and you don't even get a shot at fighting Lucas. The gameplay really starts to wear out its welcome once you leave the house for good and get to the boat.
