Rescuing dying betta from Walmart! FISH ABUSE!?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Walmart has been in the process of phasing out the sale of live fish but many of their stores that continue to sell live fish keep them in terrible conditions. Since my last two videos, the conditions at Walmart have got worse. I can't recommend that everyone goes out and rescues fish from stores like this because an increase in demand will lead to larger orders which will result in overstocking and more fish deaths.

People have been complaining about these issues for many years now. They even had several undercover video and sound recordings of the employees actually mistreating/abusing the animals, from different stores and different locations from different States. To no avail at all. Nothing was done, no one with the power to step in did step in. Some store managers did do something about it, and things did get better for a while in those few particular stores, but very quickly - within a few weeks - it went back to its old routine of neglect after they got called back by "the big bosses".

The colors of the betta say a lot about his health. When they are bright like here, the fish is healthy, at the right temperature, well fed, has enough space and light to live happily. When its colors are bland, almost gray, the fish is in poor health. So the opposite of what I just said. When the betta stays at the bottom of the aquarium, it's because the water is too cold for him. When it stays on the surface of the water, it is because the water is too hot. If it always stays on the surface, he has a breathing problem. If he stays still in the aquarium, it is because he is too weak or in poor health. The sails of the betta are very fragile and we must avoid the rough objects in the aquarium. If they are damaged, it is important to check that they do not rot or even cut the damaged ends. The aquatic plants are very important for the good health of the betta: they serve as a hiding place and to bring food in the aquarium. Giving the betta a catappa leaf once a month allows it to have vitamins, but it is not obligatory. In short, the betta is a very interesting, beautiful and unique Asian fighting fish. One of my favorite fish. I can tell you that this one is a beautiful double tail male.

I remember when I first started working for Walmart, we had fish and I was really passionate about learning more about the area. I was even going to try transferring and eventually become the DM for that area, but before I could, we remodeled and the fish were removed. It wasn't just the store killing them though. At one point, I found the GloFish with a whole canister of fish flakes dumped into it. Most times people think that the fish just aren't being fed but a lot of the time, the issue is the tanks cycle. Adding huge amounts of food to a tank isn't helping the problem, its helping to slowly kill the fish.

There are no laws protecting fish in America that I'm aware of. It may vary by state, but most places can just display and sell betta fish entirely in those little cups. While they keep other fish in tanks at the store, they send them home with you in a plastic bag.

Conspiracy theory: Walmart mistreats the fish on purpose, not just to overstock and maximise profits. On the official Walmart websites, they have plenty of articles explaining the proper way to take care of fish, ones which are accurate. So why don't they practice what they preach in stores? Well, they know most people will plan a day or two before getting a fish for their kid or whatnot. Those people, looking to go to Walmart for the stuff, will probably research on Walmart's site. Walmart gives them factual info on how to best take care of a fish. Then, when the potential customers see how Walmart treats the fish, those customers think, "Wow, they're being tortured; I need to rescue them," and buy more fish. By purposefully putting the fish in hideous situations, Walmart maximises the chance that someone who knows anything about fish will "rescue" the fish they have and give them more money than they'd be getting if they were only trying to attract experienced fish keepers. Basically, by purposefully torturing the animals, Walmart knows it will profit heavily off of human sympathy, and people will buy the fish just to save them rather than actually wanting them. This earns more money than just appealing to a smaller base of people who genuinely want fish and want to be buying healthy ones, only one or two at a time. I think overstocking and people continuing to buy is only half the problem. The other part is Walmart knowing that they can play the bad guy and profit off of people trying to be the hero.

I just think people who actually work at Wal-Mart have a different mind set than people who work in pet stores. You dont go waltzing into Wal-Mart trying to get a job there thinking you'll only work in fish. No, you're there thinking you'll be stocking or running register or any and all the other parts of the job. They just don't get in people who know anything about fish, and if they do, they're lucky. But I could imagine Wal-Mart is hell to work for, and the turnover rate of employees is high, so it's constantly new people. I've never worked there, but I've seen enough employees and read their body language to tell it's just a job for most of em. I work in a pet store and there's just SO MUCH to know and learn about fish that I can't imagine someone who is so knowledgeable about fish would think of going there first to work vs an actual LFS

Zeke Strickland That’s Because it’s my hobby. Some people follow gamers and rubbish like that, I follow channels in my interest. The problem is also people buying the fish. Though his guy clearly gave this one a better life (even if he should have set the tank up fist and cycled it) all he’s done is put another tick in the statistics box so places like this will continue selling fish and keeping them in these appalling conditions. Everyone needs to STOP purchasing fish (and other animals) from big chain shops like Petsmart etc so they’ll be forced to stop selling live animals.

My aunt finally got an upgrade for her betta. He started off in a cricket carrier the pet shop sold as a fish tank. I was growing plant in a one gallon "tank", so I convinced her to take it. I moved my plants to a 15 gallon, and gave her my 1gallon and the filter because she didn't have one. Her filter broke and now she was forced to get a new filter. But the tank was to small for it. I told her I had an extra tank with lid, but it was a 10 gallon. She said she would take it, and now her betta will be in a larger tank. I'm happy because my bettas look so happy in there tanks. I have 1 male in a 10 gallon, 1 male in the 15 gallon, and 1 female in a 50 gallon community tank. I recently had to upgrade some rescue fish they gave me to a 150, and that left me with an empty 50 gallon. So I moved my guppies, neon, black neon, and glowlight tetras, kuhli loaches, and female betta into one tank. My guppies no longer fight the only adult because the betta is now the dominant fish. She is peaceful unless provoked, and the tetras always have her back because she was raised with them. So the first day she put the babies in check, just chased them a little. It's over a week and there hasn't been fighting since, they all actually school with each other except the kuhli loaches.

The walmart in my town finally gave up and stopped selling fish a few years back. They didn't have an employee just for the fish. The big wigs wouldn't let them hire one. So the other employees had to go over to get fish for customers but didn't have time to clean tanks or do water changes. It's all about the almighty dollar now. Sam Walton is probably turning over in his grave to see what walmart has become. It didn't use to be like this when he was alive. I used to work for walmart when he was alive but they changed after he passed. I don't work there anymore. They quit caring about the people and focused on MONEY. So a few fish sure don't matter to them. Just another tax write off.

babygirlluna boy why didn't I think of that? It's almost like college is insanely expensive! Dumbass I am going to college. Why is it such a novel concept to pay employees a liveable wage. Walmart is a real job by the way. What your thinking of is a career. College is expensive going into debt is stupid. Some people can't afford to go to college because of what life delt them. Why shouldn't a multi-billion dollar company pay their employees a liveable wage. Why are you against people earning enough so they can support themselves? I'm lucky enough to still be living at home rent free. If I couldn't do that I couldn't afford college at all. I wouldn't qualify for fasfa either. Because I'm still young enough to have yo put my parents finances on it. And they make too much. They are not paying for my schooling I am. Nearly every thing I make goes into college. So how the hell do expect someone to do that. If they aren't as lucky as I am? Fucking think before you spout bullshit.

@@babygirlluna1756 there are people who graduate college and still don't make $15 an hour. And don't sit there on your ignorant butt and try to tell teachers and nurses to get a better job. There are teachers working second jobs at Walmart because it pays more. Why should retail workers make $15 an hour? Fifteen should be the minimum, meaning jobs that require college education should pay MORE than fifteen.

Wow what a transformation, you saved that betta from a slow death in that excuse of a box, or at the hands of a impulse buyer who wants a decoration for their flower vase, great job, and love the hard scape, you could possibly use some moss or similar to add to the hardscape, to give it a cool natural arch feel

It's great for him, he was lucky to meet you! You could have put it in a "hospital aquarium" for a while before its final aquarium, so you would have treated him in this hospital aquarium, and the final aquarium would have been cycled (that would have prevented the fish from suffering a peak of nitrites when arriving in the final aquarium). But what you have done is already fantastic, congratulations! He looks very happy and healthy. =)

I do try and teach them a lesson. Every betta that I have in my house which is now 33 of them. Each one I never paid for. I saved them legit. They where labeled as trash before they where even dead. I said oh this trash then? Employee says yes it is it's dead. I said okay cool, and took the fish. Ppl could just take them off the shelf and walk out. I bet you anything you wouldn't be stopped. I have seen ppl slip a few in a purse and walk out. If we went in as a mass group, in areas all demanding the better treatment of the these beautiful, Majestic fish. If I could post pics of the black orchid twin tail that I got from the walfart in my area. He had such bad fin rot his body was big sore, he has nothing left for fins pretty much. With fresh daily salty water, and so antibiotics, and alot of love and zant has been saved. IDK if his fins will fully grow back. Today I will be moving him and his keeper next to Phil and so he can start getting his find back to normalish. Flaring and such is actually good for them. My guys get to see each other all day, I night I put in my black out dividers. I have split up a 4 10 gallon tanks for most of my males, all my girls live together in a extremely heavily planted 30 gallon that is only filled about a 2/3 full. We as customers really need to group together to get them to stop. There are about 80 of them on the shelf at my shit walfart store. It's so fucking ridiculous. It's so cold in there, they are never fed, and when they are fed ppl over fed alot of them end up with blockages and we all know how that can end. I have seen some fish on shelf as young as 2 months. It's disgusting. I have a few with malformed mouths, they can only eat certain foods and I bet you anything they would have died on a shelf. Things can be done. Ppl as whole just really don't care. If ppl actually cared then alot Walmart's wouldn't be selling fish.

PetSmart, on the other hand usually has hundreds of bettas and goldfish at once, it’s so sad to see these businesses are overstocking fish just for most of them to die. There is no kind way to stop this. Stop buying fish from Wal-Mart. Harden your hearts and stop. See if there is a local store would do some kind of promotion that would attract people with children who want a goldfish. Have some kind of event with all the other fish shops working to let people know there is a difference in how the specialty shops are miles better than Wal-Mart. Do some leg work put together kids prizes, start a movement. You do that and it may save more mistreated fish. I don't suppose a local news outlet would be interested? It just has to start in one location. I bet their income from aquarium sales is not a big piece of their pie. Also, who supplies fish to Wal-Mart? Let's get some names if we can. They know that the fish they have to refund them for have been abused. If you look at this video, they must have an 80% kill rate. Who makes money on that. Canadian Wal-Mart or any fish shop are required to keep their fish in good housing, no abuse or neglect tolerated. I suspect that is why they don't carry them anymore, no money in treating fish humanely

Yes, the only way to stop this is to increase awareness and rise against them, boycott, and create trouble and cause loss on Walmart's behalf. Because they don't care about morals or what they're doing is right or wrong, they only care about profit and convenience. The best we can do is take away the profit from them(by not buying and influence other to cause bigger profit loss), and cause them inconvenience, by protesting or boycotting. There is really no kind and nice way to fight back but it works.
