A farmer dropped off a Turkey vulture at my house and my son came carrying him in in a literal sandwich box 😂. He was a baby chick. I’ve raised and released baby birds that fell from the nest before, so I was like “why not?” So that’s what I did. Little did I know that he would be HUGE (think six foot wing span), but a total cuddle baby who just wanted love and pets. A VULTURE of all things 😂. He was a big mama’s boy though. I released him into a nature preserve 45 minutes from me, took him with his cage covered so he couldn’t see anything. A week later I heard a clatter out on my roof and was like oh boy! He’s back. Yep, brought some wild ones with him too who hung back waiting on him. He reeked of dead fish and river water, so yuck 😂. But that just meant that he figured it out for himself with a little help from his new friends. He migrated away with them in the late fall, but up until then he’d stop by for some mama attention. He returned in the spring a bit more wild and standoffish, but he had to see that home was still there apparently. So I know that he made it ok on his own.

Little did you know, birds have a kind of lodestone in their brains: that’s how they fly south for the winter and show up at the same spot every year. I had 2 parakeets and two homes, the latter 114 miles apart. I didn’t usually make the drive, leaving that to my spouse, but one year was compelled to take the car, with my budgies in a travel cage, and, no navigator myself, passed my exit. As soon as I did, the birds started complaining in unison. Where they were stowed, they couldn’t see anything but sky.

Absolutely. I also had a rooster that was so smart and was very territorial of our garden and the house. He was also very huge, genetically engineered to have a huge breast for breast meat so unlike the other hens, he was not able to fly very high due to his huge breast and the weight it brought. I would pick him up and hold him even as an adult when he would weigh so much and he would love for me to pet his neck and he would nestle into me and close his eyes in pleasure. He loved me fiercely and protected me from all perceived and real danger. Most importantly, he taught me that there’s no difference from the animals we eat and the animals we love except for the relationship that we have with them. All animals love. Love you and miss you Tweety.

I'm writing that down "There's no difference from the animals we eat and the animals we love except for the relationship we have with them." I'm still an omnivore. And I eat chicken the most. I want to stop. When I see the Tyson Chicken trucks in my area taking the live birds who were fattened up in a horrible existence, I want to cry. The other side of the coin is that Tyson donates masses amount of frozen birds to the Big Cat animal sanctuary in the area. A lion can't be a vegetarian and survive.

I started the day by reading your wonderful story! I'm glad to know that Barth has found such a lovely owner, who treats him like family. People don't realise that chickens and roosters make great pets. They're far more intelligent and affectionate than ppl give them credit for. Barth has the sweetest little face and his eyes convey his emotions. All animals are sentient beings and understand more than we'll never know. I was in hospital three yrs ago and a lady came to visit with two Chinese Silky Chickens. She named them April and Chrissy. She rescued both in April and at Christmas, so named them accordingly. Anyway they kept making buck buck sounds when I met her. She said to pat them, as they were asking me for pats. I'll never forget that experience, they were little feathered angels.🐔💖

This reminds me so much of my rooster Chickie! He is an absolute character and we hatched him from an egg we got from a farmer who was selling them cheap. He turned out to be a Blue Mottled Cochin/Pekin which are apparently quite sought after as show chickens! Chickie loves being included in everything - as a chick, he loved walking along the windowsill staring out at the birds outside but he can't do that anymore because he's too big! Since he was missing it, we bought him his own special pet buggy! Now we can walk around with him in his buggy! Whenever he sees people, he always wants them to say hello or pet him - as such, any time a person walks past he starts going "buck buck buck buck buck" which is his version of GIVE ME ATTENTION lol. Thus far nobody has said hello to him which I'm sure makes him a little sad. However, he LOVES buggy time because he has his own blanket and 2 cushions in it and he gets wrapped up nice and warm. He loves rubbing his comb against the blanket because its nice and soft :) His favourite aside from buggy time is when he is allowed to sleep in the bed with me. It's not a common occurrence because I'm scared of rolling onto him or something but I enjoy laying with him on my chest, watching him go to sleep. To go to sleep, he likes resting his beak on my lip. He struggles to get to sleep if I don't let him rest his beak right on my lip! He likes to try and put his beak IN my mouth but, funnily enough, that isn't the most comfortable for me... Chickens have MASSIVE personalities and some are arguably more loving of people than some cats/dogs are! People are always surprised when they visit because Chickie will sprint over to them and run around them, waiting for them to say hello to him. So many people are scared of him because they're worried he's "one of those vicious roosters" lol!!!

My chickens teach me a lot just by making me watch them. Roosters have a really graphic or descriptive communication, because their hens need to understand them. They have a lot of tasks as they are their hens' lovers, guards, playmates and food suppliers. Barth has found the love of his life there! Well done Barth👍Well done Jennifer! Thanks for sharing your story with us! Lots of love to you both!

What a terrific human being! I've rescued animals since I was a toddler, literally. Lots of stray or wild animals in India - no vet facility, no shelters out there, I was it. I had stray dogs, 22 stray cats that rotated, literally thousands saved during my younger days. Still doing it. I had to educate myself on boa constrictors, mongooses, dogs, cats, pigeons, eagles, seagulls, sparrows, foxes, and more. Animals are so grateful for any help you give them. Unlike humans. Its a calling. I value and respect animals far more than human beings. In return, I've had almost magical bonds with them, both wild and domestic animals. No need for words. Everything was conveyed by eyes and actions. A White German Shepherd, I called Rex, who had severe separation anxiety was my shadow. He was naturally protective as he gained self confidence and was exercised hard daily. He 'saved' me from two toy gun incidents with kids, barking at them so they ran away, and no doubt would have saved my life if those guns had been real with a man behind them. No one trained him, just instinct. Super fast, alert, always on guard, and loyal like sticky tape. A black cat who I thought was a fat, pregnant female so I called her Lucy. 'She' slunk into my house to eat some cat food. My house already had a cat, and Rex the GSD, but she came anyway, very shyly. I let her eat. At the vet I discovered this was a male, malnourished and overweight, so put him on a natural home made diet with real meat, supplements, veggies, eggs, etc. Also let him outside to exercise. In a few months the weight was off, the muscles back, fur was glossy and cat was super healthy. Lucy became Lucifer or Luci. He loved the thick pile carpet which felt luxurious to him. One night, he mustered up enough courage to jump on my lap as he badly wanted some affection. As I petted him, and he felt I would not hurt him, his eyes locked into mine and the black pupils became larger and larger like he was burrowing into my soul. He was beaming up buckets of love. I've had many cats but never seen anything like this. I was stunned. I could feel the energy from this cat - it was pure love, gratitude, and loyalty. He was telling me, I love you and thank you for taking me in, I will be loyal to the end of time. I've been married, had kids, had boyfriends, had a great first love in college, but this cat gave me such unconditional love and so much of it, I was overwhelmed and very moved. I soaked it in, as much as he did. It was an intense spiritual moment, one in a lifetime. Luci just beamed up love laying there with his big black green eyes locked into mine. Pure trust. I was very honored. After that, we were so bonded, I took Luci everywhere. He was one great cat! Got along with my dogs too, even though he was scared at first. Ditto for my boa constrictor rescue from a school. Wonderful, sweet snake, so gentle and happy. Loved his park outings and tree climbing. We'd watch TV together, cat, dog, snake. Give me an animal any day over a human companion.

My uncle rescued a dozen hens from an awful battery farm that was closing down. They were in pretty bad shape and had their beaks clipped. He nursed them back to full health and made it easier for them to find and pick up worms and insects from the dirt he had arranged them in for their convenience. He had to teach them how to scratch for their grubs and bugs.. They also loved the delicious smelling meal and chicken feed he mixed up to add to their cuisine. Definitely no more boring pellets alone. They lived free range in the farm house yard and slept in a coop at night safe from foxes. All would rush to the gate when they saw his car coming home along the boundary road and follow him from the car to the verandah for pats and cuddles and a bit of conversation (no food involved). Interestingly, though they had spent all their early lives cramped in indoor cages with no normal social interaction, one hen became the organising and protective Boss Chook. Once she took it upon herself to race across to the house and flap and squawk in a flurry of urgency at the window to alert the family that a desperate old fox had come into the house yard, in broad daylight, looking for an easy chicken dinner. The other hens were flapping and squawking and fending it off down in the yard. She must've said ............... " You girls hold this scumbag off while I get the family! " All good.

Someone asked me to take care of their rooster while they went on vacation and never came back. I lived with Rico for a year and then brought him to a beautiful bird sanctuary in Maine. He went berserk with joy at all his new girlfriends. Just wanted to comment on how smart he was, how lonely he got when I worked and I saw his depression in his eyes. He was really a remarkable pet when I had him, but I knew he needed more. He got it, in spades. I called several months later to see how he was. They said he was such a personality, so proud, so happy, so busy. I cried with joy. No one can know their qualities of a rooster until you live with one. By the way, I loved this story and the music to this video is, as usual, hilarious and perfect, Dodo. And that woman is fantastic to give him the life he deserved.

Such an awesome and beautiful story!! Thank you for Sharing and Caring!! Growing up on a chicken farm harbored some of my fondest and most traumatic memories as a three year old. The chickens were literally my best friends who sincerely felt like family. I remember climbing into our chicken coop, sitting cross-legged quietly, while those chickens would slowly come and curl up on my lap. People still think I'm crazy but I fondly remember them cooing or purring as we snuggled and napped together! I also deeply remember the all too detailed horrific butchering which took place on that farm in MN.. Mom would try to shelter me from witnessing such event but as a curious kid, I'd slip away and peek behind the shed, just at the worst time! Crying frantically I'd run to my mother's side, screaming, "Dad's chopping my friends in the face!!!" Only to be scolded,, "Well, don't watch!" Experiencing that trauma doesn't take away from my heartfelt Bond I shared with those Loyal friends... I am proud to say, how even now at 48 yrs old, I still carry the gift of impersonating a chicken! Literally. Anytime I have an opportunity to visit some feathered friends, I strike up a conversation in our personal language. And we connect a Level few would understand. It's definitely a unique characteristic and interesting talent to cluck about... Even the chickens think so!! 🐔

Oh how much I miss having chooks. I lived on a farm as a teenager and had more than 40 hens at any time as well as between 5 and 10 roosters and a peacock. The sound of roosters checking on one another in the morning (they would take turns like at roll-call) was my alarm clock. Our peacock was the security guard. I always had baby chicks to look after, we kept them in the hot water cupboard of our mudroom/laundry until they were big enough to join the hen house. One day I will have some free range hens again. My step mum used to have a pet rooster many years ago. Chooky (the rooster) had his own bedroom and was a very much loved member of our family. He was the only survivor of a nasty fox attack on our chooks shed/yard and grew up in the house. When it was time for him to transition to the new and improved chookshed with a new batch of hens he missed his human family and was very upset. So mum relented and he became her companion, "helping" her with all the chores and letting her know if anything happened outside or if visitors came.

Barth appears to be a Bantam Barbezieux chicken. They are originally from France, and have been bred since the Middle ages. Apparently they are a dual-purpose variety, kept for their eggs and meat. They had almost disappeared after WW2, but interested breeders brought them back to prominence beginning in the late 1990's. A very handsome variety.
