    Perhaps removing the Pledge of Allegiance from public school was a step to convince youngsters that we are NOT a Republic. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America, and to the "REPUBLIC" for which it stands.. Mr. Henrichs, thank you for your time and effort.

    That pledge was made by a socialist, it in no way embodies the spirit of the constitution which advocated succession and not an indivisible nation.

    I had this argument with an anti-gun friend last night. I told him the whole point of a Constitutional Republic was to protect the rights of the minority from the despotism of the majority. He flat out said it was not, and that the will of the majority is law. I told him that if 51% of the populace approved of reinstating slavery, then in his view it would be totally cool. He didn't address that point at all and diverted. These hypocrite liberals claim to care about civil rights, but only if they are ones they like.

    but...that's how it is in a republic as well. that's how it was(slavery being legal) in our republic from the time our country was founded until the end of the civil war. i think you(and/or your friend, as well as some other people on this page) are confusing democracies, with cultural relativism.

  • @SicQueldorei

    @SicQueldorei

    +Mockturtlesoup1 You're forgetting that slavery wasn't voted out of existence by a simple majority but rather made unlawful via a constitutional amendment that required 2/3rds of both houses of congress to pass and 3/4ths of the states to adopt. THAT is NOT democracy.

  • @tay2229

    @tay2229

    6 жыл бұрын

    And those members of Congress were elected by the people. Had the people elected pro-slavery members then that amendment wouldn't have been added. It's like saying the the UK isn't a democracy because the National Health Service came into being via the votes of the (democratically elected) members of Parliament rather than being directly voted upon by the people.

    In a democracy, sovereignty lies with the majority. In a REPUBLIC, sovereignty lies with the individual. PERIOD.

  • @patrickwilliams4768

    The real important issue is what maintains a republic, and that is an involved, educated, and vigilant populace. The majority of people have little to no concern on what is going on politically in this country and are in all respects, due to apathy or laziness, utterly disengaged with federal and local governing decisions. At the same time you also have a sizable amount of individuals that see government as the savior and remedy for the ills of society or within their personal lives. Far too many people are willing to fasten the yolk of tyranny fast upon their own necks without proper consideration of what they lose with such propositions. Unless this trend deviates from its continuous course, those shackles will ensnare us all as victims of circumstance.

    The founding fathers had all read Plato's Republic. They all understood that democracy inevitably led to tyranny and that was odious to them. They wanted to establish a government that served natural law by promoting moral good. To that end, Jefferson changed Locke's formulation. The pursuit of happiness is fundamental to liberty. It is not some mean, venal thing that can be won by majority vote. It is a blood bond of rectitude and why we have (?) a republic.

    Reid is speaking of these words from the historical perspective of our founders. Our language has been manipulated to the point where people unwittingly end up defending contrary, bad ideas. Don't be a tool. There's a reason why the nation was set up this way, and it remains relevant in our present circumstance.

    Thank you so much for this wonderful video! It is clear that most people in our nation completely lack a basic understanding of hermeneutics. Furthermore, people now believe that an audience's interpretation defines a text, but you and I both know that the contrary is too true. An author's intent defines and solidifies the meaning of the text. It is sad that Americans do not know what type of government they're founders fought so hard to build. Thank you so much for being the voice of reason, truth, and doing so and kindness. Many blessings to you and thank you for your work! Cheers

    Reid, thanks for another great video. I would like to see a video about the role of the media then and now - the role print media in particular played during the debate that culminated in the Declaration of Independence. It seems that a responsible Media has a role in stimulating debate and spreading ideas being put forth - telling all sides of the story in an impartial way. One could even say that an honest and impartial Media has a crucial role to play in an open society and that a censored, biased or compromised media is a harbinger of Authoritarianism.

The "rule of law" in this country is a very nice list of basic rights that we SHOULD be holding to a very high regard. Maybe a video explaining the rule of law and how today we have many "laws" that actually suppress the original "rule of law".
