Some pet animals have a visceral reaction to a sound of pain or fear. My dog was deadly afraid of any and all squeaky toys, or stuffed toys that made a sound when touched. Refuses to touch them. I think when an animal has all their needs taken care of, they can afford to show a level of empathy that just isn't possible when fighting for survival.

Not a pet, but back in my days on guam, there was this one iguana that would sun bathe on a giant boulder. He didnt seem to mind if i sat with him, as he never ran away. Eventually i started giving him bits of fruit, which he ate. I hope hes still doing fine.
