Repotting STENOCACTUS Removing old nursery soil...overdue cactus repotting! MAY 2021

I have 2 separate pots of Stenocactus cactus plants originally bought from B&Q.
I've had them AGES now but they still need to be repotted out of the nursery pots & peat soil... they're quite tolerant of neglect so they've done well so far.
So I'm finally repotting them for the first time in late May 2021, as they're not taking up water this season and look dehydrated so it's definitely time to sort them out...if they are left any longer they could really suffer.
Usually I repot all my new plants but there's always a few that always end up on the 'to do list' because they are not so fragile and can wait a bit longer before repotting😆

Your Stenocactus cacti are so GORGEOUS, and they look amazing in their wonderful new pots, its so wonderful to get repotting and so good to remove the old soil, I have a lot to repot this Summer too, I think that they could be Steno multicostatus, I LOVE the wavy shape of these beautiful cacti, and I always LOVE that beautiful spoon, thanks so much for sharing the wonderful repotting Claire, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Sea for a sunny Tuesday today XXXX

I have a little trick I use on potbound plants which are tightly stuck in their pots. The company I buy my Pumice and Lava rock from includes a stainless steel chopstick with each order. If a -plant is firmly stuck in its plastic pot, I first gently squeeze the sides of the pot, Then I lay the pot on its side and, with the chopstick, press carefully through the drainage holes on the bottom of the root ball. Usually it only takes a moment's pressure to slide the plant out of the pot. You want to be very gentle to keep from harming the roots. The nice thing about the steel chopsticks , besides from being free, is that they are easily sterilized. Just spray with rubbing alcohol and wipe dry with a tissue. They are also handy for guiding the new soil down the side of the pot when repotting. They are smooth and rounded on the tip, so you can use then in place of fingers to hold a plant steady when working on it. The smooth tips won't bruise the plant, and the sharp spines won't penetrate or grab onto the steel.

😁👍 Yes indeed chopsticks are fantastic...I do use a chopstick too...you might notice the stainless steel tool I use in my videos I use all the time especially for picking the rootball apart...the opposite end is like a chopstick too, which I use that end aswell jn place of a chopstick...yes its definitely handy for the larger size potted plants...thank you so much for mentioning this! Thank you for watching and for your great comment 😁🌵🌞🌵🌞🌵🌞🌵🌞

Nicely done, Claire. This reminds me I need to repot my two Stenocactus, I keep putting it off haha. As you said these can be pretty hard to ID correctly, but at a guess I’d say they might be multicostatus. Thank you for sharing with us as always, Claire. Have a wonderful day from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌸🌼🌺🏜

Hello Daz, hope you and your cactus are enjoying the sunshine today 🌞🌞🌞 Will enjoy seeing your repotting video of your Stenocactus 😆 thank you for your thoughts on the ID 👍 My gorgeous 🌟 Stenocactus albatus longispinus is currently in partial bloom...First time I've seen it in flower since my unboxing of it a while back, so excited...I hope it opens a little more, its obscured by spines a little 😊👍 🌞🌵🌞🌵🌞🌵🌞🌵🌞🌵🌞🌵🌞🌵🌞

I love watching repotting videos, so therapeutic. The plants look so nice after the repot. Daz and I love Stenocactus too. I had a multicostatus but it didnt last very long as it was variegated and was de-grafted. Currently I have a lloydi and I just love its long spines. Thanks for sharing this video with us, Claire. Hope you’re enjoying the bank holiday. 💚🌵🌺🌼🌸❤️

@@edithcoliagrandis Thank you Edith for watching & commenting 😁👍🏻🌵 It's surprising how different cactus seem to appear after repotting, they look complete and heathier, I've done so much repotting lately, haven't filmed most of them, but the odd one gets filmed 😆 🏜️🌵✨🌞💚🌞✨🌵 🏜️

It's not the big long thick spines that you need to worry about. You can see where they are and take care. It's the fine soft needles that break off and stick in your skin that are a pain in the ...neck.

😆😆😆 Surprisingly Stenocactus look more vicious than they are...the spines are far easier to handle than some, as Emmit had commented, its those finer spines that are worse, especially the glochids on the Opuntia! I'm so used to holding cactus its just second nature after a while 😉 Thanks so much for watching and for your great comment 😊👍 🌞🌟🌵🌞🌟🌵🌞🌟🌵🌞🌟🌵🌞🌟🌵

The outer Terracotta clay pots come with the cactus plants, they are sold like that in B&Q. They don't have drainage holes in, so I drill holes in them and reuse the pots for directly planting cactus in. I have seen these pots available on Ebay aswell.
