Repositioning Cruises: 7 Huge Benefits

If you are looking to book a cruise you may have come across 'repositioning' cruises. I have been on two repositioning cruises and during this video, we will explore what a repositioning cruise is and look into why so many people love taking them.
What is a Repositioning Cruise?
A repositioning cruise is a one-off itinerary which moves a cruise ship from one destination to another. The most common repositioning cruises happen in spring and autumn/fall. Almost all cruise lines and ships will reposition at some point.
Repositioning cruises provide some great opportunities to experience unique itineraries for cheap prices.

I just completed a trans Pacific cruise. I flew from Australia to Vancouver and joined Ruby Princess for a 32 night cruise home to Sydney Australia. This was the best thing I have ever done. I met many people from around the world on this ship. I travelled solo in a balcony cabin and enjoyed sitting and watching the ocean. There was lots of entertainment and the food was delicious. Thanks again for this video and I have just subscribed.

@@devjaxvid Yes I paid double the cruise fare and gratuities and port fees were for one person. I believe I got a slight discount by paying the deposit when I was on a previous cruise. My cruise fare was AU$9,000 plus AU$800 for prepaid gratuities.

In 2017 I took a two-week repositioning cruise to the UK. I thought I'd be bored by the seven-day stretch of nothing but ocean, but it was nice. I have never seen so many passengers reading (like me) or playing board games. Bad weather almost made me miss my connection to Ft. Lauderdale, so I learned to always fly in a day early for a cruise. Especially for a one-way trip with no catch-up point.

It will also be my first solo cruise, having always cruised with family and friends. It is a 23 day transpacific cruise. Like you, I looooove sea days. This one has 6 port days and 17 sea days. I am so excited. Only109 days to go.

We also enjoyed one Quebec City to Ft. Lauderdale with many stops at Canadian and East Coast ports. We hope to sail the Pacific and Atlantic. Sea days are the best!

I got 6 clients booked in group space on the Crown Princess at the end of May 2020. It’s a repo from Barcelona to Southampton. The ship is switching from Med itineraries to Scandinavia and British Isles itineraries . So there are more than a few different types of “repositioning” beyond the usual. Good deals to be had for sure!

We did a repositioning cruise once. Cruise line was moving from Alaska cruises to Caribbean, we took an 11 day segment where we met the ship in Hawaii, spent a week there, then cruised to San Diego where we disembarked. Next leg of the repo would be through the Panama Canal. Celebrity Cruise Line, back in 2001.

I like that I could just enjoy the ship on a reposition journey. Cruisers won't agree with me, but cruises never seemed to me as the best way to enjoy destinations (mostly due to limited time and especially due to early departures 95% of the time). I mostly wanna go on cruise because I love being on ships. I'm thinking one of those Europe to Brazil cruises would be a great choice for me, make a few interesting stops, then a week in Rio and fly home. Definitely on my bucket list now, hopefully I will be able to find a line that operates / will operate them and is informal enough for me :) Sailings via Panama Canal (Europe to western America) mentioned in comments also sounds very appealing.

The thing that can get a bit high with these is the gratuities (especially if you have children). I recently got a quote for a window cabin from Miami to Barcelona. It is only $1358 for two adults and two children, including taxes and fees. But because infants are charged gratuities at the same rate as adults they would add $768 to that, which really kills that bottom-line affordability for budget travellers like my family. Sometimes the fine print kills your plans!

This channel is starting to make me want to go on a cruise again. I went once as a kid with my parents and didn't enjoy it in particular, compared to us travelling at our own pace. However, the aspect of exploring the ship if there isn't too many people on it, would make me excited. Unfortunately I couldn't find any pet friendly cruises, and I want to include our dog in our holidays, since she's also part of the family and it's when we have the most time for her.

This is something I seldom see in other vids where rambling seems to be the norm. The problem I now have is which repositioning cruise to take! LOL. I know this is an older vid, but I wonder if you have addressed the repositioning cruises in the Atlantic during hurricane season, one of the biggest hurdles I worry over. HELP! A stuck record but we cruised on Marella Discovery from Barbados to Malaga. Why did we choose that cruise. All inclusive helps! The deciding reason was that when we factored in the total costs between P&O and Marella , it came down to the fact we could get back to Brum rather than mess about with transfers. The other issue was the cost of a balcony, same cost on both but the saving we made paid for a week in the canaries. Also, if you sit on a balcony for six days crossing the pond eye, spy becomes a tad limited!

We just added 3 extra nights in the Caribbean to our 14 night transatlantic cruise. Those 3 nights with an inside cabin cost one third of the 14 nights transatlantic in a balcony cabin. You mention theme Cruise: BEST cruise I have ever been on, BY FAR, was a Star Trek Theme Cruise. Close to 3,600 Star Trek fans, plus about 2 dozen actors, writers, directors, make up people, etc. from the series. Imaging being in the elevator, and you favorite character from your favorite TV show walks in and says hello! Well, it happened to me, twice, on the cruise. It was a BLAST. The best part was that you could talk to everyone on the ship, because you ALL have something in common. We made friend from places like New Zealand, Scotland, Australia, Germany, and more. IT was so good, we signed up for the next one while on the cruise. It was postponed for a year, but we are already looking forward to March 2022! The the ship's crew also had a blast - they told me it was about the most fun they ever had on a cruise themselves. They were posing for their own selfies with passengers, many of who walked around in costumes most of the time. Personally, I bet that theme cruises will become a bigger and bigger part of the cruise industry. The company that does the Star Trek cruises also does an 80's cruise, as well as several jazz cruises. Link to the Star Trek Theme cruise (PS sold out 11 months in advance): www.startrekthecruise.com PS if you have an e-mail, I would be glad to send you some pics of passengers in costume

Agree 100%. We did a 12 day NYC - Miami including Bermuda and the Eastern Caribbean. Only problem on the NCL JOY was it was 100% plus capacity. It seems there’s a European Holiday in October so there were many teens on holiday. Plus a large Asian reunion on the Joy. Love NCL but the Joy had a small Lido deck, so port days were the best times to stay onboard. We learned the Joy will be refurbished in 2024. As Emma says “do your research on the ship.” Still would do a repositioning cruise in the future.

It used to be the same with the Ju-52. A route flight was cheaper than a round flight. I booked one and went from Essen Mülheim to Cologne. It was quite inconvenient to get to the airport in Essen. First, you had to take the tram to a certain shopping mall, then you had to take a bus to the airport. But since I don't have a car, I would have had to do it that way anyway, so for me it made no difference. ... I'm glad I booked that flight! That was in June 2018, and after that accident in August 2018, there were no more flights with the Ju-52, so that was my last chance.

This past June (2022) I did the Norwegian Getaway's 13-day transatlantic from Copenhagen to Port Canaveral. We took five days to go around Denmark, through the English Channel, and past France and Spain to get to the Azores for our only port day. After the Azores we took six days to get to Florida. This was a last-minute change for the Getaway's schedule. The ship had planned to be in the Baltic all summer doing cruises that included St. Petersburg, but well, you know what happened with that. NCL decided to bring the ship back to the Florida and added this repositioning as a result. Because it was only added to the schedule two or three months before it happened it was VERY cheap. As a solo cruiser I was in a balcony cabin by myself, and I paid $1500 for thirteen days INCLUDING all the port fees, taxes, and gratuities on the included drink package. You can't stay in a Motel 6 for that. I will add that I was fortunate enough to get the flight from Charlotte to Copenhagen for miles. I tried to get a number of friends to come along, but they all said the airfare to Copenhagen was too much and/or they couldn't take that much time off work. So since it was not on the schedule ahead of time and the cost of getting a one-way flight, the ship was VERY empty. Only 780 passengers on a ship built for 4,000. You read that correctly: seven-hundred eighty. I said two things on that cruise I never thought I'd say on any cruise ship: "there are too few people on this ship" and "I'm ready for this cruise to be over" three days before it was. NCL did a great job on the cruise itself. Lots of great entertainment and even extra stuff you'd never get otherwise. For example, the young woman who was in the cast of Million Dollar Quartet did a jazz cabaret show that was awesome, and the guy who played Johnny Cash in that show is a Titanic historian and gave a presentation that was attended by well over a thousand passengers and crew. I'm glad I did it, but don't plan on another cruise of that length in the near future.

My first cruise, October 10-17, 1994, a repositioning cruise, originated in New York on October 9 and picked us (me, my mom, and our travel agent) up the next day at the Philadelphia Cruise Terminal (which closed in 2002). We sailed on the now-defunct Regency Cruise Lines Regent Sun (a 30-year-old ship) to St. Thomas, Saint Maarten, and San Juan, flying back to Philadelphia on Carnival Airlines on October 17, 1994. The bathroom flooded one day, we met a nice couple from Pomona, New Jersey (near Atlantic City) on the ship, and a poor baby on the flight home screamed in pain the whole way. It was my first international vacation other than to Canada, we didn't need passports yet (I got mine in 2003 and renewed it in 2015), the cruise line went out of business on October 30, 1995, and the ship sank in 2001 while being towed to the scrap yard.

I traveled on Regency and can assure you that they deserved to go out of business AND sink. Beautiful ships, atrocious, snarky service and NOTHING available ( salon appointments, massages, table at the specialty restaurants etc) without sliding $20 bills at the receptionists... when we finally got a table (paying extra) at the Italian Special Restaurant, we were stuck by the kitchen door. We had a gorgeous balcony suite right under the bridge and coming into the Lisbon harbor at daybreak was a heartstopping thrill, but I have never had such an unpleasant cruise, and we have never been treated as poorly on our lovely Princess cruises or even Greek Line (years ago, before they, too, went out of business.)

Have a blast but leave the dynamite at home! My first cruise was a repositioning cruise from 10-17 October 1994, my age 31 year. It was on a now-defunct cruise line called Regency, an eight-night journey originating in New York City. The ship, the Regent Sun, picked us (me, my mother, and our travel agent) up in Philadelphia for an eastern Caribbean itinerary that included St. Thomas and St. Maarten before terminating in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from where we flew home.

In February of last year, we were considering the 2020 sailing before the Wu Flu struck, but of course we abandoned the idea. I didn’t even follow it up to see if she sailed. There is one scheduled for November 11 this year, but according to the Vacations to Go website, it’s already sold out. It looked like a good itinerary with lots of sea days and 3 weeks of Italian food, wine & coffee.

I'm NOT a cruise person (and I'm not convinced about your idea that there is a cruise line for every1 - being confined to that space with all those ppl sounds like a nightmare for introverts) but have recently started to consider repositioning cruises as a way to beat jetlag (being an Aussie the jetlag to America is considerable) and your lil vid has further convinced me that this is definitely something to consider in future so thanks. Having said this I would challenge you to do a video on how to enjoy a cruise as an introvert 😆 (I've considered things like avoiding prime eating times, prime pool times etc but as an experienced cruiser I'm sure you'd have better ideas than me)

  • @EmmaCruises

Haha, I’m definitely more introverted you’ll never see me at karaoke or anything (haha). A cruise ship is just a collection or restaurants bars lounges etc, if you’re happy going to restaurants on land, it’s just the same at sea. It’s like a floating city. Definitely would want to pick a more relaxed (and maybe smaller ship) they tend to be calmer. I’m sure your love it if you tried a cruise line like Princess 😀❤️

We've done a couple of these. I think one reason they're so much cheaper is they don't pay as much in port fees, because there's so much time at sea. And that's probably the critical part, you have to find the right cruise line, like you said, where you enjoy just being on the ship. For us, that's Oceania because there aren't any kids.
