Reporting a Driver in the Bike Lane (for the City to Ignore)

Just another day of a driver blocking the bike lane in North Park. This time, it's a guy in a pickup truck waiting for his buddy. Never mind that that there's a parking lot like 20 feet away.
I used the ‪@TheCityofSanDiego‬'s GetItDone app to do this. It takes a couple of minutes, between taking a photo, uploading it, then entering a license plate number, the type and color of the car, the type of violation, etc. In theory, the city can take this information, and issue the person a ticket. But will they do that?
Thanks for watching.
These videos can be scary, but please know that my goal isn't to deter people from riding bikes in San Diego, but to show the real-world conditions. Sometimes it's pleasant, sometimes it's just fine, and other times there's tension and conflict.
The roads in San Diego should be safe and accessible to everyone without the use of a car. My hope is that these videos help those in power make better decisions for all our safety. I also believe that the more people who decide to ride, the safer the roads will become.
Please remember to support your local bike safety and mobility advocacy organizations, like BikeSD (bikesd.org/), the San Diego County Bike Coalition (sdbikecoalition.org/) and Circulate San Diego (www.circulatesd.org/)

I understand where you're coming from, @zekeigtos7240. For the most part, I agree. In this case, I felt like there was little chance of danger. If this guy had gotten out of his car, he would have had to contend with folks watching from the cafe, and also me getting off my bike. The assumption that people on bikes are helpless would be incorrect.

Normalize reporting bike lane parking violations 👏🏼 I dont think this is an overreaction. I know I would kinda feel like a Karen, but we fight hard to get these bike lanes and we should all report it for cyclist safety, otherwise moterists will eventually just say "meh, I'll just park in the bike lane, cyclist can just go around, nobody cares, and the city wont ticket me". The more we report these incidents, the more pressure we put on the city to enforce keeping cars out the bike lane.

It's incredible how shameless they are about it. They know they are in the wrong and still whine and moan. I've had to go around a car in the bike lane on a road that has a speed limit of 45 MPH by my work. It's an industrial park and there is free parking literally everywhere and they still park their car in the bikelane.

I get so confused by people like you. Would you rather people on bike just break windows? What do you mean "live don't work like that"? Did you know that in NYC, you can video a truck idling, which gets the city to issue a ticket and it pays the person who took the video? People make thousands of dollars a year holding silly drivers accountable. Seems to work just fine.

@jonerving3843 Normally, I'm with you, and I have places to be. Part of why I did this was to really time how long it takes to make a report. I've stopped and made reports when trees and bushes the city is responsible for are overgrown, or when there's a bunch of glass that needs to be cleaned up on the road. But you have "accountable" in quotes, as if it's not a real thing. This is why drivers feel free to do whatever they want. It needs to stop.

@jonerving3843 Since you asked, I don't report everything. This is an unusual thing for me to do, and I explain that. I hope that you and everyone you're close to don't have to deal with being hit by drunk drivers.

It's so tempting to let the air out of all four tires. But I would never do that. Here's how I deal with it. If I see a car parked in the bike lane, I check for a gap behind me, signal, and move over. I take the primary position if the lane is less than 14 ft. wide. If there are more cars up ahead in the bike lane, I stay in the primary until there is a long stretch without parked cars. I'm not going to weave back and forth.

  • @RidingBikesinSanDiego

I'm also not one who engages in the mischief of letting air out of tires. So, funny thing about this bike lane: had I stayed in the main travel lane and kept going straight, the bike lane goes away on the next block, and is in accessible on the block after that, because of construction projects. When those are complete, I think the city will go back and actually "complete" the bike lane. Whether or not they make it so cars can't access it is another story.

@swlightn For sure! Realistically, I don't think the city's goal is to protect cyclists (in most places). They're trying to do the bare minimum so as to not inconvenience drivers too much. The city will slow-roll every project, unless people die (like in the case of Pershing). Even when people die, like on Washington, they half-ass it.

Do cyclist not also work and pay income and property taxes? You do know your federal gas tax is a flat amount and not a scaling percentage right? And you do know it hasn't changed since 1996 right? So that means your federal gas tax, adjusted for inflation should be double what it is today. So you could make the argument, that cyclists pay MORE than their fair share when it comes to road infrastructure, especially how they don't do nearly as much damage to the road as your 10000LB SUV. Makes ya think
