Replicator 2x Unboxing Experience | MakerBot 3D Printer | Setup Testing

3D printers allow users to print 3 dimensional computer files into actual objects, depending on the material being used by the printer. One company leading the way for consumers is MakerBot and their Replicator 2x is in hot demand, most buyers wait 2 months after paying to receive it.
Finally got mine this week and recorded the opening, set up and test printing. It seems as if there is a fine line between only using these 3D printers for gimmicky creations only vs things people can actually use. Much of this depends on how well one knows a 3D modeling program. I have quite a few photography related designs I would like to make to actually use in my photo work, and I am realizing now that I will have to really learn one of many 3D modeling programs to make it happen.
The Replicator 2x is working great, its been going pretty much non-stop since Ive opened it, and most the prints are successful with a few hiccups.
Ill have much more coming over the next couple weeks as I get better with the 3D software. (I am using blender right now).

Very interesting, Michael. I appreciate you taking the time to do this video for us. A friend is using a much smaller (in size) unit to make scale model structures of specific railroad buildings and is selling them to fellow model railroaders. I got to watch him make a couple of them just a few weeks ago. I can see that the prices are already coming down on these when I see what your's is going for now compared to his just in the last year. What a great machine to have!! Best, Andy

I see it now and agree. Anyone who does hobby modeling would love this thing. You can basically print up your own trees, jets, buildings, soldiers, weapons, accessories, that dang ninja sword I lost from my Storm Shadow action figure when I was 9. Pretty much anything they want/need, should be able to design, print up and sell no problemo.

21:33 they print out some of the package materials like the strap blocks that you can see at 1:47 with the printer to quality test before shipping. So other colors may come out as mine was purple and black when I first fed my plastic through.

the reason for the the objects to get rough look is the plastic was not cooled properly you need bigger fans the size of the ones in your pc motherboard two of them placed on top of the plastic cooling while building if you install them then print you'll see a big difference hopefully,

The final products are pretty strong, the denser and more layers of plastic, the stronger they are. Its about what you could expect from standard ABS plastic, perhaps a little less.

Very nice demo. I got the Duplicator 4, a knockoff of what you have there. Runs exactly the same, but the Duplicator has a bit more power in the power supply, which is a 750W Mean Well, underneath the lower platform. I like the BenchMade Tanto auto also... I had that until my ex-wife stole my two, along with my tear gas pen, from me. ReplicatorG is the ticket from .stl to gcode/binary.

*Fantastic Video!* Although, may I offer a bit of constructive criticism as a formally trained photographer? Almost all the the video was *slightly* out of focus, it just lacked the kind of sharpness you'd expect on a compressed 1080p stream. If the RAW video is *clear* and *sharp*, than perhaps maybe trying compress it again (with another codec if need be) to increase overall quality. Thanks for making this video! I enjoyed it VERY MUCH! This Machine fascinates me very much and so far *your* video is the *best*. *PERHAPS IT WOULD BE REASONABLE TO MAKE A 2.0 VERSION! Especially with more 5000k (daylight) lighting*. It'll add a very professional "touch" to your videos if you have proper 5000k (daytime) studio lights (even if they are cheap - hell you can even use lamps with 5k bulbs!) You just earned yourself another subscriber!
