I had the same issues with running hot when sitting in traffic. I have a 70 with a 396. Would run a bit too hot with a 180 and too cool in mild weather with a 160. Ended up buying a 170 off of eBay. It was expensive for a T stat but solved my problem. The companies name started with a R.

Good call, I may try the 170, if I can find it.

how about running electric fans and an electric water pump? watch out with the o-ring seals. i had to use a gasket aswell as the o-ring on an aluminum water neck..because it wouldnt seal

Electric fans won't help. I did some testing using a commercial high capacity box fan in front of the radiator, while parked, to see if increased airflow at idle helped any. It did not, so we know for certain that the problem is water flow. I have never used an electric fan and am a bit skeptical on a 'driver' type of vehicle. I would rather try to find different pulleys or go with a pump that can flow more at idle speeds.

Did it work? I got tired of messing with the Chinese Metal cracking on mine. So I ordered a $120 stainless steel one from Summit Racing.

It worked. I usually get 5-8 years out of the cheap china ones until they rot out.

Axle's Garage I have had great luck with the reusable mr gasket along with 2661 housing with the o ring. They marry perfectly. No leaks.

noun-informal•North American noun: schmutz; noun: shmutz ------dirt or a similar unpleasant substance. Derived from German Jews, I guess that's why it's common in the North-East
