***If you've got a manual transmission see my notes in this comment. They may help*** Thank you Charles for this excellent video! I did this repair today (Dec 2020) on a 2009 Rabbit with a *manual* transmission. Saved a bundle versus what the dealer and an independent shop quoted ($1,800 and $850, respectively) Did it myself for $300 in parts and some tools I didn't already have. Below are notes I took during and after, in case they help anyone. I'd say this is already a pretty easy repair for anyone who's done some car repairs before, and only slightly harder for a novice with some basic experience. And it's MUCH easier with a manual transmission since you don't have to remove the shift selector components or the pump cover or pivot the pump over and around the shift selector. Basically, if your car is a manual you'll skip most of what's mentioned in the video between 5:00 and 12:00. (But you should watch that section anyway just for context). And remember, DON'T remove the cover/plate on the front of the old pump or on the new pump if you've got a manual transmission. Oh, note that in the description above, the vacuum pump gasket that's linked to doesn't seem to be the right one for a 2.5L engine. It's for a 2.0L engine, not 2.5. Get the 2.5L gasket which is : www.shopdap.com/07k-145-215-a.html. (Double check with DAP if you have questions on the part). THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND Take photos! The video is very thorough. However, your engine area won't look exactly like the one in the video. Consider taking some photos of each section before you start unplugging wires, removing bolts, etc. That way, if you need a reference when you're putting things back together, you can see exactly what *your* set-up looked like earlier. Beware dropped bolts Maybe put an old dish towel or something under the pump when unbolting it--it might help catch the bolts if you drop them and save you some time and frustration. (I wasted 30 minutes fishing out one of the T30s, the 10mm bracket bolt, and one of the battery mount bolts). Brake booster hose removal I had some trouble removing the brake booster hose from the pump. Didn't want to risk ruining the rubber boot or hose so I left that on until I had unbolted the three T30 bolts. It was then easy to swivel the hose off once the pump was free. (Or rather, swivel the pump off the hose). Can't get the old pump out? The video shows the bracket that's bolted to the left of the pump. If you haven't moved that bracket fully out of the way when it's time to remove the pump it'll seem like you missed a bolt or something as the pump won't want to come off. But it's just the bracket preventing the pump from pulling out. Make sure it's out of the way and try again. Tight spaces (and tools) Ratchets, sockets, and extensions: the area around the pump is tight, even with a manual transmission, and it's good to have a variety of socket extensions--3 inch, 6 inch, maybe even longer. And 1/4 inch socket extensions will fit better than 3/8 extensions. I used a 3/8 inch ratchet with a 3/8 to 1/4 adapter because I was too cheap to buy a 1/4 ratchet for a single repair. :) But the 1/4 inch ratchet would have been handy. T30 bits: I used a 2 inch T30 bit with an adapter and extension, but someone else mentioned using a 6 inch T30 bit which would have been really helpful! If you can find one, buy it. (Again, to get into the tight spaces around the lower T30 bolts). Gears: if you've got a manual transmission you may have to put the car in another gear to get better access to the T30 bolt that's at approximately 4 o'clock. (Make sure your hand brake's on!) I think 5th gear ended up giving me the best access. Have a friend shift it for you if possible, and check which position give you more clearance....easier than getting in and out of the car yourself. Torque wrench: as mentioned in the video, it takes some trial and error getting the torque wrench in the right position to torque the T30s...and you MUST torque them to the 10NM specs. You'll need a torque wrench that you can set to 10 NM...larger ones may not go that low. I found a 1/4 inch Lexivon torque wrench on Amazon for $32 that worked well. (Not a pro tool but good enough for this use). Other tools that were handy: a headlamp, plus a lantern or some other light source (Charles uses a shop light in the video--I used a small camping lantern for lack of a shop light). Also get one of those small mirrors on a telescoping stick to see the two T30 bolts that were bolted underneath...and to look for the bolts I dropped into the engine compartment. :-) Results So far, so good...no oil leak when I started it up, and no leaks after a longer drive. It's an easy repair if you've got a manual 2.5L, and only moderately harder (based on the video) if you have an automatic. Just takes some time, tools, patience, and care. Well worth it, as this saved me from the dealer's ridiculous $1,800 quote. They claimed that even with the manual transmission they had to put it into "service position" which from what I can tell involves removing a load of parts from the front of the vehicle fo easier access....but clearly that's not the only way to do this repair, as demonstrated by Charle's excellent video.

This is so helpful. Thank you for the extra information. I was wondering if you or @humblemechanic knew what the part that's in front of the battery tray that's not in this video or the one DAP. The part has a gray cap on it that has markings that look like it's for windshield washer fluid, but it's clearly not for windshield washer fluid, lol. The reason I ask is because it's making it impossible to get the battery tray out which is making it a lot harder to get to the vacuum pump. My car has an automatic transmission so it's already a tight space and I need all the room I can get. Thanks in advance for any help

@@GameplayPS4Tj Mine has a manual transmission and I found that removing the front plate gave me better access to the T30 bolts. I had trouble removing the booster hose so I just left it in place since I was just replacing the gaskets and not the entire pump. In addition to the tools recommended, wobble extensions came in very handy for the tight spots.

Man, you just saved me hundreds of dollars in repairs. Every car shop wanted to charge me $1k-$1.5 just to change this vacuum pump on my 2009 VW Tiguan. I know for a fact that its not the same process because vacuum pump is located top of back engine. $50 for pro diagnostics, $187 for new OEM vacuum pump, $10 for a 6pk of beer... thats less than $250... Again... Thank you for this DIY vid...cheers

I'm glad that an official VW tech endorses this repair. I did this very thing a few years ago after thinking about the problem and removing the cover. Glad I didn't go the book way, it seemed really ludicrous even back then. Just another example of how real experience as a master technician can help with things you've never seen before. Still, I do like your videos and think you are a stand up guy.

I just got a quote for $1500 on my 07 rabbit. Parts are on order to do myself. Going to be saving $1250.

@@MrJuarezjr22 I got quoted $1,500 just now for this. SMH. Luckily, I’m somewhat mechanically inclined. I just changed the clutch on the Jetta two months ago too. Glad I don’t need to drop the trans again anytime soon. Next time I’m getting a trans jack. Will be a heck of a lot easier than man handling it and balancing it with a regular jack!

Awesome video with great camera angles. My wife came home last night and said she heard a clicking sound coming from our 2007 Jetta 2.5's engine. I went out to take a look and discovered that there was barely any oil left in the engine. Isolated the leak to the drivers side. And after seeing your video, I was able (at the right angle) to actually see the cover to the vacuum pump this morning and literally saw oil dripping from the lower edges. Even though I love working on our cars, I would probably normally be too intimidated with this sort of repair. But after seeing your video, I'm 100% confident it'll be a breeze. Hopefully I don't keep dropping that one pesky screw :P Again, awesome job. You've saved a lot of people about $1000.00

Thank you for your video!!! When changing the oil in my 2013 Jetta SportWagen I noticed an oil leak coming from somewhere. Became a little upset at first then started doing research online for causes and fixes. Your step by step video is spot on. Going slow and taking my time it took me a couple of hours.

I have to thank you for such a well produced and detailed video. It could not be any better. I just performed this repair on my 2009 VW Rabbit and I had the laptop next to me the the entire time. The dealer and independent shop claimed I had to have the transmission pulled in order to do this job on my '09 MK5. I was being charged 1350$ parts/labor for that job to done. I'm glad I found this video.

This video is almst 5 years old and exactly what I needed. This is absolutely the best exchange of a part video I have ever seen. VERY knowledgable explanations, listing tools (socket sizes, torx sizes etc), reasons for different parts of the teardown, advice for things like stuck tabs on the air hoses.

Charles thank you so much. 7 years after this video was released and it helped me to easily replace the two gaskets on my leaking vacuum pump. Saved me almost $1500 CAD compared to the dealer quote involving dropping the transmission.

I’m a Mercedes’ mechanic, been for 30 years. I gotta say I appreciate this video as very professional. Thank you for not having a meth induced pre video music and video intro and thank you for not having some generic Japanese cartoon music playing too loudly during the entire video leaving people straining to hear what you’re saying. Thank you for editing unnecessary linger moments that put people to sleep. Thank you for using a torque wrench. I’ve done this repair a few times and it has always just been the front cover gasket leaking on the pump. I usually use the black and gold wearever brake kleen and compressed air to help aid in the drying process along with a flat metal oil drip pan under the car to catch all the gunk. I later drive up on ramps after the repair and clean the underneath the same. I finish up by spraying leak trace powder around the repair to make sure it’s repaired correctly then drive it and recheck for leaks. The crc stuff smells like carb cleaner and stays on my breath inside my lungs for a couple days …my Wife says. I’ll be you a million dollars not one mechanic in the dealership would dare remove the transmission to replace this part but WILL charge the customer for the flat rate labor involved In Doing so. I’m also sure they absolutely love to hear about these affected engines coming in with an “oil leak.”…..easy, easy money. These repairs where the manufacturer screws up and requires the transmission or other large components to be removed in order to replace a part but the technicians find a way around it usually gets back to the flat rate police when the techs go to school for updated training or the shop foreman takes note and contacts the manufacturer. At least in the Mercedes’ world they got privy to these instances and changed the flat rate operation codes to reflect this. Believe it or not Mercedes is pretty decent about abusing people that way although their prices and mark up are still ridiculous, but along those same lines Honda is even worse.

I just completed this repair, thanks so much for the detailed video! Total job took about 2.5 hours and it was way easier than I thought it would be.

Found this video a few months back while trying to diag a MASSIVE oil leak on a Beetle that was traded in to the company I work for. Great info about how to replace this part and I've been following you ever since then

Like everyone else is saying thanks for this awesome tutorial. For the Beetle, the battery tray is a pain for sure as it's in two pieces and the battery cables need to be put back exactly how they were funkily routed before. The electrical connection to this front bracket has a slider-engagement on the very bottom that slides waaay out to disengage what it's connected to.

After watching this video, I feel like I could do this myself. I think my fuel pump just went out, and I don't feel comfortable messing with the fuel tank and cleaning it out myself, so I will probably take it to a mechanic for that. But once that is done, I think I can tackle this project on my own. I greatly appreciate all the good details, including torque specs.

The pump leaks something fierce this is true, but $1,150 for labor for a job that takes 1 hour, FYI manual transmission. I feel like they need to be reported to the ethical police...

At 14:40 you mention regularly dropping this bolt. Try putting the T30 bit/driver in place onto the bolt, then attaching a small magnet at the far end of the shaft - this will temporarily magnetize the bit so the bolt stays stuck to it. I've done this a few times when doing repairs in drop-prone locations, and it usually works pretty well.

The pump was bad ? or just the seals, gaskets or o-rings ? I've been working for years and I did not find a motive to change the pump...

Great video.. Much thanks.. By the way, is there any special reason to mark the position at the bolts? Not just check the torque spec.

Because one of the holes is sloted if you dont get them correct your shifting won't be right

+HumbleMechanic Those discussions were saved discussion threads on a VW forum. The discussions are in text format. They were no videos posted. In those discussions if I remember correctly there was some disagreement between commentors as to whether or not the repair could be done with the transmission connected. I had this repair done, but I didn't ask the tech how the repair was done. But on a another note, the purpose of this part is to assist with applying the brakes. I thought that is the vaccum pump's purpose. Isn't that so or not?

+Cedric Long Yes, the pump supplies vacuum, to the booster. Many other cars simply use engine vacuum to achieve that

+HumbleMechanic - I noticed the pump you installed has a metal like cover. Installing a pump with more of a plastic/rubber material, such as the one you took out, are those okay?. What are pros/cons of each type of cover. And does the pump leak motor oil?

+Kobuny Y should be the same pump. I would replace the entire pump. It is also VERY easy on the manual trans cars. Just 4 bolts and your care done! :)

Appreciate it, the DYI, Charles! To anyone wanting to save money and doing it yourself, it’s pretty easy. I did it all without the use of power tools. I’ve worked on cars before so I’m a little mechanically inclined, but I’ve only worked on stuff for a year. So if you feel like you can’t do it, you can! I doubted myself but it’s on. Just don’t over torque lol! On the linkage bracket as I was torquing it back on, it broke so now I’ll have to drill it out and fix it but the bracket still holds itself with the other 10MM (I believe it was a 10). Again, thanks Charles and love the beard 🧔!

For those in the NY/NJ area who do not feel comfortable taking this on on their own (like me) and wanting to replace their vaccum pump (without paying ~1K for labor) try Tolima's auto center in long island city. I recently had a leaking vaccum pump and after getting some very pricey quotes I did some research and found this video. I bought an OEM part and took it to Tolima's and they put it on at a very reasonable price. It has been a few days since and see no more leaks and my brakes seem to be working much better. Thank you to all the honest technicians out there!

HumbleMechanic I’m debating whether to do it the proper way or to have a friend who works on cars change the gasket for me. I’m really scared of what could go wrong if I let my friend do it, do you really think it’s a high risk fix? My friend suggests I buy the gasket that sells on Amazon, everyone mentions it, but I’m just scared of messing things up so i’m debating whether to drop the 1k the dealership is asking for or to let my friend try... opinions??

For the 2.5L vac pump I see that you can get a pump seal kit on Amazon for ~$40.00 vs the full pump replacement for at least $170. Is there any reason to replace the full pump? Does it need to be tested somehow? Obviously just replacing the seals is a lot more cost-effective.

how did it go with replacing the seal kit on the vacuum pump. Did you get any improvement or you had to later replace the whole vacuum pump?. Im thinking of replacing my seals as well rather than the whole pump...

I bought a rebuild kit for 35 on Amazon. Did the job, there is a hard plastic tube/nipple coming out of the pump. That's where mine was leaking. Be careful when removing it the tabs that lock it place get brittle over time. I broke one tab it locked in place but I wanted to make sure it wasn't going to come out. So I mixed just a tab of jbweld & just put a little bit and I do mean a little bit on the plastic to metal area. So if I do have go back in to replace the O ring again I can. The large O ring at first it didn't seem that it would work but it will. Don't stretch it, but just press(tough on the thumbs) it into place. Start at the small side of it working around to the wider part. The dismantling of the components to get to the pump was much easier on the manual shift 2.5 2007 rabbit than what was in the video. Either way I would do it again.

This girl is one happy member of the HumbleMechanic appreciation society! Repair done. After finding out that my newly acquired bunny needs a new valve body (better than needing a new tranny), the last thing I needed was a 1K repair to fix this oil leak. Yep. The manual transmission is just a simple remove and install.

I think this fellow is Great! He makes a great video. NO music so we can hear what he is saying. The sixteen minute mark was a life saver for me, because I thought my main seal was the problem. ( I do like it that he posted that he dropped a nut 3 times, this does make us all feel that we can do the job, though we do need a magnet)

Slapped on the ECS Tuning vacuum pump delete plate this afternoon. No leaks...everything went very smooth. Very nice video!

I've done this repair on my second 2.5 Beetle now. Great opportunity to also fix the driver's side headlight bucket while the battery and airbox are out. Thanks for the video!.

I know this vid is 5 years old, but I did this job about a year ago and it was such a good feeling when my wife took her Jetta in for service and the vacuum pump was no longer a recommended item on their walkthrough. Thanks for the information!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! This video probably saved me around $800-$900 in repairs. Replacing the vacuum pump is supposed to be done by dropping the transmission. I don’t have the equipment or tools necessary to drop the transmission in my 2012 Beetle, so I would have had to pay someone else. Instead I bought a rebuild kit for $50 and did the repair the way it’s done in this video.

I have had this oil drip issue for a quite a while not knowing what to do other than fill the oil when I have to. And recently, things got a bit worse which frustrates me A LOT. Then I stumbled upon this video while searching for common reasons for VW engine oil leak. I just ordered the required parts and am looking forward to fixing the leak. Thank you very much for the detailed instruction which saved me from this monkey on my back.

Thank you profusely for this video👍👍I was able to change out the vacuum pump in my 2008 new beetle. It’s a manual, and I read in quite a few comments the difference that makes! Although, my battle with disconnecting and removing the battery definitely compensated for not having to deal with the shift selector😂 two different shops quoted me over $1100 to do this. Thank you for saving me over $900!! 🙏

I was sKEEred to try this since I have no mechanical experience. However, I watched the video several times, tooks notes, ordered the pump and bought the couple of tools that I didn't own to attempt it. When you say that one lower torx is hard to put back in and you dropped it about 3 times, I think I dropped it about 30 times. Also, I was told by 2 different places that I took it to get the oil changed that it was my rear main seal. Subtract the vacuum pump, gasket and tools, you saved me over a thousand dollars. It took me about 3 hours and a sore back, but I haven't had oil leak since I changed it over 2 weeks ago. Thanks so much, great instructions for a female with no mechanical knowledge.

i just recently stumbled across this video seems real easy to do i noticed i was leaking alot of oil under my car and turned out to be vacuum pump. i got half off it off today and hopefully done tomorrow after work thanks for the tips on how to do it pump cost me $324 from dealer and saved me $1500 all together i appreciate your dyi videos keep it up

This method worked perfectly! My leak seemed to be from the gasket on the back side of the pump. Another video on youtube suggests that the leak is likely from the cover gasket, and they only replaced that. Apparently, that's not always the case. Everything comes apart cleanly because VW doesn't use gasket sealer here. All I had to do was wipe off the mating surfaces with a paper towel. Total cost for all three vacuum pump seals was about $40.

I just completed this and it saved me a ton of money and not much time. I did lose some bolts into the belly so i suggest having a magnet grabber. I had a manual trans so it was way easier then the video shows. You do not have to take the cover off if you have a manual. The wire harness on the left of the pump was the only pain point for me. It was fairly hard to get back on and the bottom bolt to the pump goes through the harness too. If i had to do this again i could probably do it in less than an hour ( if i had a magnetic grabber). So glad this video exists, thank you so much Charles!

while i was in there i replaced the map sensor too ( i had an error for it) i also cleaned out the throttle body (4 extra screws). In the entire process the most pain in the ass part was really taking the engine cover off. It's like they want to discourage you from the start.

Thank you, this saved me $1,650! Dealer quoted $1900, got the parts for $250. But damn was that bottom T30 screw a pain. Needed to use a socket wrench to break it loose

I am so thankful that you put this video up. I just saved $1100 by not having a dealer do this job! I was able to get the pump out and replace it with the USP Motorsports delete kit. It works great!

Thanks Sooo much for this. Took my Rabbit to a local mechanic and he misdiagnosed it as a rear main seal. He's not a VW guy. I found this video, and found a gasket kit, took me awhile to do it, but, no more oil leak. Thanks again!

Thanks to your video, I replaced the vacuum pump on my 2006 Jetta SE 5-speed this past fall, and replaced it on my wife's 2012 Jetta SE automatic yesterday. I was also quoted about $700.00+ per car from my local mechanic who told me that it was not possible without dropping the transmission. I bought my parts off Amazon which was less than $70.00 each including the pump and gasket. That bottom T30 sucks...and it seemed the more frustrated I got, the harder it fought me...imagine that. Also just a heads up from anyone who needs to replace theirs...do it soon, my 2006 leaked oil right onto my starter and ended up destroying that as well and needed to be replaced.

@@HumbleMechanic Yeah, that one had been leaking for quite a while. Once I started seeing evidence of a leak on my wife's car, I immediately did an exploratory teardown and got the pump and gasket. Side note...I may be moving to your area(ish) in the next few months, would be cool to meet up and buy you a beer (I feel like I owe you for what your videos have saved me).

I've done rear shoes, alternator, starter and this is my next project and just by watching thia videos 😁

I just replaced the gaskets using your teachings. After careful inspection of the old gaskets, I couldn't see any issues but installed the new set for $15 The dealer quoted nearly $1600 saying the pump needed replaced. Being that the brakes felt fine, I was leaning towards the gaskets so I was willing to throw some time and a couple of bucks at it. If this dont solve the problem, I will replace the pump next but I will only pay the dealer as a last resort to do this. I am not saying the dealer was not correct, but I am just trying to save some money. Thanks for parting your wisdom and experience. My experience was just as your video on a 2013 Passat 2.5 Cheers, Rob
