Much easier if you pull the windshield, and go through the glovebox , remove the heater core and spare tire, and Bob's your uncle. But only on a Tuesday.

It was really nice of you to make a video of this, and post it. Thank you. The thing is so well-hidden, there's no way the average person could know where this is, without a video like this. I found this for a friend who was trying to get her truck fixed and the guy she enlisted to help her, couldn't figure out where the fuel filter was. Thanks again.

I fell sorry for your friend. The person she "enlisted" to help her is clearly not qualified to offer anybody help. Anybody with smallest amount of Mechanic skills could find this filter. Beware of "Mechanic" friends.

"One thing I'd recommend for doing this job is that you have every swivel tool and extension ever made!." -Meow Bang. Love it.. I was replacing my starter when I put a hole in my fuel line and then decided to change my fuel filter at the same time. That was 3 days ago I'm still trying to get that damn fuel filter mounted up going to try the screwdriver in the hole method you did.

@4:27 i thought the gas fumes finally got me. just had the fuel pump fail on my '94 Xtracab 22re 4x4 5 speed, leading to me learning how to replace it (didn't expect to pull the bed off, but i did), so i really ought to replace the fuel filter too. surprised to see that, much like the fuel pump, it's looking like a harder-than-the-average-longitudinal-4-cylinder type of job to do. can't complain though; i love this truck.

I'm working on friend's '93 toyota pickup and some things are brilliant and some things I feel are designed by children on this truck. The person that designed the fuel filter bracket should be fired. I had no problems with the banjo bolts or the bottom bolt. It's the stupid top bolt of the bracket that is almost impossible to tighten even if using a swivel sockets. There is simply no straight on access to the bolt. You also have to do all the work thru a wheel well and you need to bend the metal frame so you can get your hands in there. I never swore as many times I did as I did on this job. The brilliant part? How about a gas tank drain bolt? Very nice. If you have to replace the fuel pump then you need to take out the 8 bed bolts and slide the truck bed back a foot (wire harness won't let you go any further) and then you gain access to the top of the tank. You can also remove the fuel tank from the bottom but it will be difficult to put it back on and screw in the main fuel line.

Invest in a crow foot wrench for the top bolt and cut a hole in your bed like everyone else.

Nice video! I noticed the the Napa fuel filter has the mounting bracket attached. The Toyota factory bracket is separate from the filter and if you tighten the bracket too much, the bolts won't align with the holes. Should'a gone to Napa. Thanks for the video.

Not on a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine. Even with the access thru the wheel well, it's a pain in the butt because you can't access the top bolt of the fuel mounting bracket.

This is the worst design element I've ever seen.....I've never cursed so much in my life on a "simple" mechanical job! BUT I LOVE THIS TRUCK! I have a 92 shortbed RWD and if you can't lift this vehicle at least 18-20 inches off the ground, it's just about impossible to do this job. (It's far easier to do this job on a 4WD which has much more access because of their inner fender/frame design). But if you have a RWD, find a buddy who has a lift.... that's the way to go cuz you need unbelievable arm articulation to get at this thing. I have such a buddy and once I got this bastard loose I decided to change location of the filter to the upper mid-rear fender area directly across from the intake manifold. I did not use the same filter....I used the filter that is available for a 2003 Tacoma which looks identical to the original but it eliminates the fuel line directional "holders" on each end of the OEM filter. I then installed new re-formed fuel lines and got a nice 1' wide steel strap to make a hold down bracket. I painted the strap black to match the filter and as an added bonus I now have a very convenient spot to check both before and after filter fuel pump pressure....awesome!
