Replacing the rear Nitrogen Suspension balls on my 1994 Mercedes SL600 V12 R129

Second part of the sphere replacement on the 1994 Mercedes SL600 V12. This time it's the rear suspension balls located in the trunk. Follow along as a hack takes 3 weeks longer than a pro would!!

I just watched this video again as I just ordered a pair for the rear of my 94 SL600 ! Looks like the driversside one will be fun! But I'm looking forward to the smooth ride again, that it once had!

Great video series. Seems to be a hydropneumatic setup like Citroen but with steel springs carrying some of the weight. I saw the damper blocks attached to the spring mounting at the front but missed their location at the rear. Keep up the good work. The spheres are filled with nitrogen. Less explosive than hydrogen.

OMG you are so right! What was I thinking!?! Just validating my grades in HS chemistry!!! I'm a knucklehead...thanks for the correction of course it's nitrogen not hydrogen!!! Thanks for watching:-)

I am wondering 2 things, 1- what made you know that they needed to be, or should be replaced? 2- while lines are opened, probably a good time to bleed old fluid out and replace with new. Have you figured best way to do that? I'll be doing. Any of these things next spring, summer, on my 94 SL600. Thanks

Hey Merv thanks for watching! On my car the suspension was basically making the car sit on the tires. It was completely blown. I really think that was because all the actual leaks in the system around the valve block I had rebuilt by Klaus and the pump that was leaking.... If you're not seeing any leaks then the most common symptom of bad spheres would be a bouncy or super stiff ride... These cars are easy to flush the fluid on if everything's working properly. you can just disconnect the return line into the reservoir and attach a tube and let that flow into a bucket while pouring new fluid into the reservoir... Probably takes a couple litres...thx!!!

Thanks for these videos. Do you need to manually de-pressurise the suspension system before working on it, or does it de-pressurise itself when the engine is switched off?

It does not depressurize itself. Once you put it on a lift or jack stands though you are good to go. Otherwise the body will fall onto the tires if it's depressurized while the car is on the ground. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video. I have to tackle the front spheres on mine soon so this is very helpful. You mentioned previously that you would do a video on how to bleed the system, did you ever do it or does the system need bleeding at all?

Hey William thanks for watching and commenting!! I followed post #8 in this thread and was able to bleed the air out: forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/index.php?threads/ads-1-bleeding-how-to-do-it.143148/

You're not kidding! Access was pretty bad on that one. Each one of those fast forwards are about 20 minutes long turning a wrench a quarter turn at a time :-) thanks again for watching!

Next my ASR SRS lights, looking so forward to seeing it out of limp mode. Watched some videos, but no solution as of yet. Transmission shifts fine. Battery has 11.5-12.5 volts. Any thoughts anyone?

Hate to say it but it sounds like wiring harness issues. Could be the main wiring harness for the injectors or the wiring harnesses for the mass air flow sensors.... The main harness is expensive but easy to replace. The mass air flow sensor harness is cheap but extremely difficult to replace....

@@cassidycarcave2781 visually, the harnesses look good from where I can see them. However I have heard that's a common problem. Love the car and would charge to eliminate possibilities. So far my searches show NLA. If you know of a supplier, please let me know where you'd suggest. Thanks again!

PS: I have access to another, identical car, same year, everything, that is in excellent running condition. I have swapped the 5 computer modules and MAF sensors one at a time. No change on my car, but donor continues to run perfectly with my parts. So I'm guessing, wire harness may be the cause. But not 100% bet :)

@@TheMervK check out my video where I'm talking about the "SL600 going back under the knife." That will show you where to look to see if the mass air flow wiring harness is deteriorating. Otherwise, you can visually look at the wiring harness that goes across the top of the engine to each injector and see if it looks cracked or corroded. I bet you will find one or both of them falling apart. Hope not!!!
