So I don't need to apply any chain grease? My garage door was installed before I bought my house and the old chain had a liberal later of grease.

You don't need to apply grease to the new chain on most garage door openers. Refer to the owner's manual for your garage door opener to see whether the manual recommends lubricating the chain. If you don't have the manual, you may be able to find an online copy on our searspartsdirect.com website. Look up the parts diagram for your model using the model search feature on our website and click on the link to view the manual if it's available for your model.

Sears PartsDirect is temporarily out of stock on the chain and cable assembly right now but you can find that part on Amazon or other online retailers using a web search.

What about a chain that appears to be super tight. May chain is part chain and part cable. The chain portion is loose, but the cable side is super tight, When I operate the door opener, the motor does not turn, but you can hear and it's almost like the cable is getting tighter. I so I unjam the cable. As I said when I hit the button I hear the motor, but the cable will not move, like it is jammed.

It sounds like you may need to adjust the travel limits on your garage door opener. Your symptoms seem to indicate that the motor unit is still trying to lower the door when it runs, which is putting more tension on the cable and causing slack in the chain. We recommend that you have a service technician release the chain from the sprocket on the motor unit because the cable side is under extreme tension. Once the technician releases the chain from the sprocket, he can adjust the travel limits and force limits on the garage door opener to prevent the chain and cable from binding up so the garage door opener will work properly.

Worked great but my chain is too long and severely sagging, beyond what tension bolt absorbs. Suggestions?

The correct replacement chain for the garage door opener should be the right length. Let us know the model number of your garage door opener and the part number of the chain that you received. We’ll check the chain’s compatibility with the garage door opener model. If the part number of the replacement chain is compatible with your garage door opener model, you shouldn’t need to adjust chain length. An incorrect replacement part may not be the right length. If you ordered the right part number and received the correct replacement chain but the chain still needs to be shortened, you can remove links from the chain using a punch or a chain link removal tool.

@@searspartsdirect I have a brand-new unit, CMXEOCG323, and the chain cannot reach the sprocket. The cable is almost as long as the chain.

We looked up the parts and the owner’s manual for that model. Here’s a link for the owner’s manual that we found for model 13953970SRT: www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/user-manuals/13953970srt-craftsman-parts-manual. The owner’s manual seems to show that model 13953970SRT uses the same type of trolley and rail that’s shown in the video. There’s a possibility that the motor unit for model 13953970SRT was installed on the existing rail, trolley and chain assembly for a previous model that was already in place in the garage. That could explain why the rail and trolley don’t match the ones shown in the manual. If you purchased a replacement chain and cable assembly and can’t install it on the existing trolley, you’ll likely need to return that part if you can’t attach it to the existing trolley on your garage door opener. If the existing rail and chain on your garage door opener are from a previous model installed in the garage, you may be able to find the model number of the previous garage door opener and order the replacement chain for that model. If you’re not able to find that model number and the replacement chain assembly won’t fit the existing trolley on your garage door opener, then you’ll likely need to replace the garage door opener (unless you can find the rail and trolley that match the motor unit for model 13953970SRT). Replacing the trolley, rail and hardware parts of model 13953970SRT would likely cost about as much as a new garage door opener. We hope this information helps. If you need more help, send us more details and we’ll try to assist you further.
