Replacing Reversing Valve on Goodman Heat Pump Condenser

Had to replace a reversing valve today but before we did that we had to solve a "rattling" issue on a blower motor for a furnace. This was my 2nd time ever replacing a reversing valve and ironically both have been Goodman 🙃

    Good job man. There are a few tricks to putting on reversing valves that you learn over time. One of the tricks that I like is to cut out the old reversing valve leaving fairly long pieces of copper on the valve then unbraze those pieces and braze them onto the new valve. After that, use couplings to reattach the whole assembly. This allows you to do the difficult brazing outside the unit while being able to keep the valve cool.

    Bro that's freaking genius. My boss did that with a rheem when I first got with him but I didn't have enough 3/4 Couplings on me to do that. I normally cut out compressors but after burning a hole in that pipe today I definitely will try to see if can do that trick instead. Don't wanna go through that again

    @@TNHVACLIFE lots and lots. Been doing it for 26 years and most of the people I’ve learned from have been doing it for even longer. As far a reversing valves go though, another trick is to have a vacuum pump running if the oil in the compressor starts to boil off causing phosgene gas. Braze one joint, then cool the part with water before brazing the next one. Removing the entire condenser coil like they did does help a lot. You can also make your own couplings with pipe by using a hand grip swagging tool. It’s a very cheap tool compared to the hydraulic ones. It’s also easier than the ancient hammer swagging tool your grampa used. Removing the compressor before the reversing valve helps avoid phosgene gas as well.

    @@AB_HVAC not tryna spend 3k on a press and fittings tho. Depending on how much u use it, the time saved will prolly pay for itself in a season. For property mgt jobs with a tighter budget.. stay8 and a mapp torch is clutch. cheaper and looks better, plus don’t have to lug the oxy torch.

I would've liked to try and see if I could've gotten away with just the wheel cleaning, if I would've thought of that in the beginning 🤦🏾‍♂️

    I think Trane may have the easiest one because you really don't have to disassemble the whole system to get to it. I only took this apart because the first time my boss came to help me on one, he took the condenser apart so he could get all around the fittings. And that unit happened to be a Goodman too 😅 so I thought why not do this one the same way

  • @OnePointLander

    @OnePointLander

    2 ай бұрын

    I disagree. You are using a very oxidizing flame, which is very hot, which is why you are compensating for that by keeping the flame away from the copper which doesn't really get the copper heated up. So to counter that compensation, you move the oxidizing flame closer to the copper which in turn is burning a hole. Try a neutral flame with a number two tip, keep the flame a little closer and the heat will wrap around the joint, while moving it slowly, then apply the siflos when the copper just starts to heat up and turns a little red.
