I love you for sharing the agonizing thought process that can go along with disposing of something that feels like it *might* still be useful ❤ Sounds to me like you got plenty of use out of the old food processor, and it doesn't owe you anything.

Yes! This is for anyone who needs to hear this message (and Dana) - You have permission to throw things away and NOT feel guilty about it! If it facilitates getting things out of the house, if it's better for your mental health, if it's just easier than figuring out how it can still be used or by whom - Just. Throw. It. Away. Creating / maintaining peace in your home is more important than the potential benefits of getting rid of something "the right way." This is something I used to really struggle with until I read Cas's book The Clutter Connection. I still struggle with whether something is (or "could be") useful, but generally once I've decided it's not staying, I have little problem tossing it in the trash to make it leave. Just like your decluttering muscles, it gets easier the more you practice it. One day, when my house is in order, Future Me may have the energy to list things on marketplace or whatever, but that's one less thing Present Me has on my plate right now.

Thanks for sharing about the thought process. I took some stuff to donate at our community center and the joy on the person's face that wanted it made me feel so good! I want to scour my house for more to give. I'm not going to miss it and I want to put a smile on more people's faces.😊 Please try to donate what is useful instead of trashing it. I can see you might not want to deal with Facebook but it's not that hard to drop off at thrift store for most people. Sadly, you are unlikely to get as much use from the new one, but the advantage is the smaller footprint and lighter weight. Wonder if it is available in prettier color? I love the fact that my new air fryer is pale pink. But old can be small, too. My retro 'Half-pint' microwave is smaller than new ones, yet fits large dinner plates. 😊

When you were explaining how you were thinking of giving away your old food processor and just explaining how it’s broken but still works reminded me of a series I watched where there was this elderly couple that were selling their house and the husband just loved stuff, he found a reason to keep everything. Well, they had this old crockpot that had a finicky knob that would turn on itself which he mentioned when he decided to give it to a young couple with kids and they were so appreciative of the gesture. Well, the old crockpot turned itself on overnight and caused a roaring fire while the family was sleeping. They made it out but there was nothing left of the house. The father shortly died from complications caused by the fire. So, reminder to all of us, once it’s no longer safe, it’s time to throw it away. It might just save lives.

This is so true. I've been taking this to heart as we go through our basement. We put stuff down there that "sort of" still works. It's...where appliances go to die. Who wants our broken stuff?! I think that the same mentality of "don't be someone elses dumping ground" can be reversed as we simplify. "Don't make someone else your dumping ground." I don't want to put that burdon of deciding to keep/not keep just because I don't want to throw it away.

I empathize with your struggle with throwing away the old food processor. I have found that in these situations (when things *technically* work) asking myself "Would I give this to one of my kids?" is really helpful. If it's not safe/usable enough for them, then it belongs in the garbage.

It's not that I love my old crockpot. It's the fact that it still works & fits in the space I have for storage - hence the Dana dilemma. The newer ones are larger. Just me-but I would never cook something 8 hrs in a plastic bag. I try not to use plastics in the microwave either.

I have told this before a few years ago. I had 4 cheese graters that I hated (one had a broken handle that poked me, one was new but too tall and skinny and would tip over, 2 were Tupperware containers that had grater lids). These were all floating around my cabinet for pots. Finally I realized that I just needed to spend $12 and get one new one that I like. Then I got rid of the 4 that I hated. Now the pots have plenty of room and the grater is one small corner. Win!!!!

I did a similar thing with measuring jugs! Had all different sizes, about 6 in all from tiny acrylic, cheap plastic and glass. Being different sizes they were all stored in different places. Eventually got rid of all of them and bought a set of 3 Pyrex jugs. I now have decent jugs in which I can measure small to very large amounts and they all stack inside each other. After 3 years I still find pleasure in using them!!!!!

We actually did away with gifts for Christmas a couple of years ago. My family was always an over the top gifting family so this was a BIG move. We decided our gift would be to go on a cruise in the spring, and we did. Oh my, what a RELIEF it was not to have to figure out what to buy and spend money, just to bring in stuff that half the time didn’t get used, and didn’t fit under our clutter threshold. Now we don’t miss it all. We decorate and spend time together and eat tasty food. So we are at least not bringing in more stuff to clog our home’s arteries!

I found your channel a week ago and lady, you have changed my life! I live on a narrowboat in England, very small space, *loads* of "essential" stuff! I didn't have room in my cupboards for everything I had, so the boat was always a mess and it's very correct that mess attracts mess! I would look at it and think, right! I'm gonna take a couple of days off work and clean this place, but then... where do I start? I want to put this away, but I can't get to that cupboard until I move that, and... where do I move that to? And forget ever being able to properly clean any area! So... I'd sit n watch KZread videos... not really about cleaning, just, y'know... "watch a bit of TV to get me in the mood to start - and then I'm definitely gonna do this!!!" (Of course I never did!) So there I was, sitting in the only space on my sofa that didn't have stuff piled up "just until I straighten this out" (yeah right!) And there you were! Decluttering? I think I scoffed actually, but, "start with obvious trash"... I thought, "Well, yeah, I can do that bit!" Then... where would I look for this item - well I knew where I'd look if my boat was straight! But it was "if I needed this, would I remember I already had it?" Blew my mind! Suddenly I had a bin bag full of stuff, and a clear sofa! By the end of the day my living room was completely clear, and I was heading to the next area to start! I have now got rid of *so much* stuff! Why do I need 5 bed sets when I only have 1 bed? Why do I have enough plates and pans to feed a small army, when there's only me here, and even if you had friends around only 4 people can comfortably fit in! I was asking myself "why do I need to keep this string of bells?" And on more than one occasion came the question, "what even is this item?" If I don't know what it is, I definitely don't need it taking up space! Right!? So thank you! You helped me to tackle an impossible task, and win!

I want to let you know, in case this happens, if you lose the little plastic dololly -pusher thing, Kitchenaid will send you a new one! The very first time I washed mine in the dishwasher, it blew off the the top rack and landed smack on the heating elements and melted ( talk about your toxic smells)! Seeing the 1900's in the viewpoint of my children (born in the 2000's) has been something else. I was at a thrift store today and my youngest found this old fork he became fascinated with so I asked him why he was so fascinated with this specific fork and he was like this comes from the 90's. Oh, what makes you think that? Because it's so old that nothing made before then can actually be found....child, I'M from pre-90's 😂😂😂😂😂

Oh my goodness, it feels AMAZING to find someone who thinks EXACTLY like I do!😮😮 It frustrates the heck out of me when my brain goes immediately to that “what if…, maybe I can…, someone can use this…, I can’t put this in the trash because…” my house is full of items like that! All it takes is for me to have heard that you shouldn’t blah, blah, blah or whatever and my mind goes to that place right away, I have kept the stupidest things for those reasons. The thing is I do t have a problem with giving things, I actually love to share things with others even if I still have use for them, I do however hate to throw things away, my brain finds a possible use for every idiotic thing! Ughhhh! But I’ve been doing it, it’s initially painful but it feels so good. 😊

Luckily I now have a neighbor who scraps so if I'm getting rid of anything possibly scrapable I can give it to him and it feels slightly less traumatic because it will be "used". I still have the conversation about what if the new one breaks etc....but it's easier for me to let go of the old one...he appreciates it and it makes it easier to me. I have to admit I need to listen to your books and KZread etc over and over because I understand what you're saying, but understanding is not quite doing...but I'm getting better at the doing. I can't thank you enough for sharing this with us!!! Btw your hair looks really good. Ttfn. Stay warm!

hahaha, "or on purpose, whatever." I love you, Dana. I love my chopper. We're in a camper and I'll probably upgrade when I buy a house. I freeze my chopped vegetables. I inherited my grandparent's storage unit a few years ago. I found that when given the choice, I kept their stuff and got rid of my own. I love old stuff and it seems to be made better. I took an old percolator from the 70s to college with me in the early 2000s. I used it for years and it still worked when I threw it away. We moved and I didn't realize that I had left coffee in it when I packed it to go into short term storage. It was a mess and I just couldn't deal with cleaning it at the time. It was all intact and would probably still work beautifully. I've gotten rid of so much stuff (2/3s actually) and I'm working on not feeling guilty for having a slow spell right now. Congratulations on your new gadget and out with the broken.

I would definitely have donated the old one. People could need parts from it. The motor, blades, some parts are still fine. Eg: I have an old Cuisinart and the bowl is cracked, but to buy a new one costs a ridiculous amount. I found a replacement on OfferUp, and saved a bunch of money, plus kept all that out of the landfill.

If it's broken and dangerous to use, who in there right mind will want it. Yes there might be some1 with the same old processor who wants a new part, but if that thought stops someone (like many of us) from decluttering something, you can store it in your own cluttered mess for them not our trying to declutter homes.

Hi Dana … my mother had 3 or 4 old kettles and 3 old toasters…. There were valuable pieces on all of them! So they never got thrown and mum might have needed them someday …. Maybe the new one would break! When eventually the new one did break … she would get another new one! The good side of my mum was she was the recycling queen … such a good skill to have … and the bad side … well that’s obvious!! I have my mums voice in my head telling me to conserve and not waste. It creates yet another barrier to decluttering. The moral of this story is to search for other voices and opinions that free you and allow you to make decisions in your own best interest. Thank you Dana for being one of those voices for me ❤❤ 🎉

It would have never occurred to me that it could be so hard to throw away something that was hazardous, but usable with fiddling. I'm relieved that you were able to do it. No object is worth keeping if the safety mechanisms have failed. The potential injuries could be life-changing in horrible ways.

The wanting to keep it “just in case”. The dropping things and warning the hubby about how heavy the trash is from all the stuff. I have washed them twice to donate then, said well, I paid good money for them and they really are beautiful but ….. I don't know if the US has this but here in Canada, our recycling places can take appliances like this so it doesn't end up in the landfill. The downside is that it gets shipped overseas where people will strip it for the metal. The other downside is that the final waste sits in a landfill on the other side of the planet.
