REPLACING MANUAL TRANSMISSION OIL

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My GTI has 101,000 miles. I decided it was time to replace the manual transmission oil, despite the fact that VW does not specify a drain interval for the manual transmission. While I was working under the car, I also decided it was a good time to bond my exhaust system to the body. See the video for more details. Also, read this topic to learn how to fill a transmission without a fill hole: www.vwvortex.com/threads/6mt-...

I agree with your points about working on your back. It can be claustrophobic and hard on your back, working room not so nice, but being able to better use your chest muscles can be very helpful. I mean, 95% of us can probably bench press more than we could shoulder press so it makes sense. Well done job my friend 👍😀

Not at all! The fluid was not as golden as my TDI at its first drain. So, I will likely switch to a 50k drain interval for the transmission, just for peace of mind. Even with that, the shifting felt the same before and after. Thanks for visiting!

My movement was limited. But I only need an 1/8-to-1/4 turn to break the bolt loose or to tighten to specs. Otherwise, it was easier to use a shorter tool for the easier threading. Thanks for visiting!

I am the original owner of a 2009 MK5 Jetta 2.5 liter 5 speed manual that has 218,000 mostly highway miles. I bought it in December of 2008. I never raced it, but I've red lined it many times and have had it maxed out a few times. Two Volkswagen dealer's service shops told me not to change the manual transmission oil, and so I never did. The transmission still shifts fine.

@@AltruisticWarrior I had the '85 GTI manual trans-oil changed around 120k. I can't remember for sure but that might have been VW recommended. I just made it to 221k on the Jetta with a trip to Tennessee and North Carolina last week. It still shifts well. I wish it wasn't getting rusty. It's what I get for living in the Northeast. Best VW I ever owned! Now if the '19 Golf R can hold-up as well, but I don't expect it to, stage 2 and all.

I have a mk5 Gti turbo with 170000 on the clock. Stage 2 tune, twin pods, 6spd manual. I’ve recently purchased this car from its only original owner. A new clutch was installed in Oct of this Yr 22.. I changed the oil /filter etc the next day. Replaced the control arm (dog bone) and fixed an O’ring on the air intake. I’m no mechanic but more a enthusiast. The car seems to be running spot on. Any advice I’d appreciate, I’m new to the vw gti but I am thrilled with this car. Should I consider an oil change in transmission (manual) What should I keep an eye out for….🙏🇦🇺❤ Oh and Merry Xmas xx

Thanks for the note! Are you still in touch with the previous owner or know how to contact the person who did the work? The only thing that jumps at me is the transmission fluid. You're in great shape if it was changed with the clutch. I'd say you're okay if the previous owner changed it around 100,000 miles. But you track kilometers, right? If yes and the fluid is original, I'd change it and stick with a 160k drain interval. Stick with VW fluid. It's good stuff! Take care!

Are the plugs supposed to come with O-rings or crush washers? I just bought a kit and there aren't any seals included. Also, does the LSD and transmission use the same oil? I bought a kit for the LSD from the same place and they just sent me four 1L bottles of the same oil.

  • @StealthGTI

No O-rings or crush washers. The thickness of the casing and the fact that the plug feels like it gets tighter as it is screwed-in compels me to think that it MAY be similar to a pipe fitting. So, no worries about the lack of crush washers or O-rings. Take Care!

I'm not 100% certain of how to do it since I have a fill hole. But I've read that there is a black plastic plug on top of the transmission near the gear selector. You might have to remove the airbox to access it. Since there's no dipstick, you have to let all oil out, then fill with 2.3L of fluid. Take Care.
