    Hey buddy, I don't think I saw these. Your bikes really are the best ive ever seen. This 74 Varsity looks better than it probably was when new! Looks like the blue on my 74 Le Tour, I recently snagged a 77 sky blue Varsity in outstanding condition, only needed tires and some buffing and polishing here & there. Hope all is well..

    Good to see you buddy! yes, the Opaque Blue was one of the 3 colors offered on the 1974 Le Tour, the other 2 were Opaque Red and Kool Lemon. Congrats on the Sky Blue Varsity, these came with a translucent Sky Blue felxon tape that gleamed beautifully over the chrome bars, that's one color I don't have in a road bike but I do have it on my '75 Fastback. Thanks for stopping by!👍👍🔧🔧

    @@that70sschwinn here in Philadelphia there's a bigger then usual really nice second hand store, I like to stop by once in awhile. My timing must have been good this time, two new Schwinn's had come in. A blue 69 Sting-Ray 5 speed and the blue 77 Varsity I told you about, of course I was interested in both but the said he's keeping the Sting-Ray as a display for the store but said he would let the Varsity go for $50.00 which by the way has a mint condition speedometer, even the cable looks new. The whole bike looks barely ridden, it does have that nice blue handlebar tape. I never get that lucky, we usually have to pay up for nice stuff. If you're still putting pictures of viewers bikes up I could send a few pictures over like i did with the green 65 Sting-Ray. Do you have any new projects waiting in the wings?

    I have always wanted a Schwinn Varsity "back in the day". So I purchase a Schwinn bicycle when I graduated college as a present to myself. I still have it and it's complete. A 1971 Schwinn Continental, Sierra Brown. Always keep inside. I would like to replace the bar tape. (has a few very small holes) Thanks to your video, I think I can do it. I just hope I will be able to find the original brown bar tape, and do as well as a job as you did on your very beautiful orange Varsity restore. Many thanks for sharing yours with us!

    Oscar, For the bike that you restored in Chestnut, can you tell me what colors you used to do the touch ups on the bike? Was it a good match? The can of translucent Chestnut I purchased off of ebay will not mix properly. I took the can to Sherman Williams and was told the paint has separated due to it's age. The paint goes on a very dark color, not Chestnut. Even after a good shaking at the Sherman Williams store. This seems to be a common problem with older translucent paints. Thanks, Jay

    I usually clean the frame with a little dawn dish soap and water with a sponge to get the dirt and grime off the frame, dry it with a soft cloth. I treat any rust carefully with a gel version of Evaporust, try not to get it on the paint as much as possible, I use a Q-tip to apply a coat just on the bear metal rusty areas. Wipe it clean and use a red clay buffing compound to minimize scratches and remove tar and other debris. wipe down and finally use a polishing compound a white creamy paste that brings out the shine on that original paint. Be careful around the decals because they will fade. Watch my Suburban video part 3 where I remove the decals and wax the frame.

    Hey Jay, I recently restored a 1974 Chestnut Brown Suburban and tried matching the color, after several formulas attempted, I decided to only wax the paint and cover the major blemishes with a dark brown just to hide the sliver base coat or bare metal in some areas. The result was better than a lighter color that would be more noticeable than the original ding. The bike came out very nice after waxing and replacing the faded decals. Take a look at part 5 for the end results. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hnWX0KRqipvUYc4.html

    I have a flat handlebar on a fixed gear bike. I ordered a roll of Tressorex orange cloth tape. I can't seem to find a video about wrapping flat handlebars, let alone wrapping flats with cloth tape. Which method should I use to keep the tape undamaged for the longest time possible? From center to end, or from end to center? Should I roll the tape forwards (Towards the front wheel) or backwards (towards the rear wheel)? Consider that on a fixed gear you have to stand to relieve the rear wheel from your weight, hence, the handlebar is gripped and pulled up unconsciously while skidding and jump stopping. That is why I want to wrap it perfectly so it doesn't unwrap or detach when pushing down on the bar, or pulling up.

  • @that70sschwinn

    @that70sschwinn

    5 жыл бұрын

    Cloth tape is thin enough to wrap from the stem to end and wrap forward to maintain a tight wrap with use. The thicker cork tape should be wrapped from the end to center for better wear and less chance to unravel.

    Why do some of your bicycles have tape wrapped around the base of the Brake lever mount and some just have the criss cross. I’m not an expert but in the 80s we used to do the wrap around the bars and around the base of the brake mount and then finish out. I did work at a bike shop that was a long time ago. I Haven’t done it in about 35 years. I’m redoing my yellow 1971 Continental and I would like to find out which way I should do that. Is It year specific? Also would like to know if I should put the white reflectors on the wheels or the red and yellow because I have both sets I just don’t know which ones came on this 1971.

    Nice, It may similar to the one I found in the Opaque Blue, the can is whit and red with the Schwinn logo. I will be doing some test with my can, I'm hoping I can just spray an entire tube rather than touching it up. The Opaque blue is a solid color over the clay primer so it should go on pretty straight forward. The Chestnut brown is a translucent color that was done over a sliver base coat giving it very metallic finish. You should test it on a similar surface to see how the color goes on, send some pics if you can.

    Thanks for watching Tom, welcome to the Schwinn culture, once your restore your first one, you will be looking for your next one, I started in 2015 and 50 bikes later, I'm still looking for my next find🙄 Your Varsity sounds like a classic Sierra Brown, the color has not been reproduced for resale, Schwinn used a silver base coat and a translucent brown top coat and clear coat. It would be a hard color to try to match, cleaning and using a polishing compound would bring the luster out on that frame as well as minimizing the dings and scratches. The rust can be removed with available products like Evaporust. Check out the links below to see how I did my Sierra Brown Varsity and Continental, they cleaned up well and ride great Good luck with your project 👍🔧 1971 Varsity kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYB7rpWnZK6TZ5M.html 1972 Continental kzread.info/dash/bejne/d6J3pbWOZq_JfLw.html

    Great to hear you are restoring one of these vintage classics, if the frame has extensive rust you can use a soft wire brush to flake off the worst areas, other wise you can use steel-wool or sand paper . Once the rust is flaked off you can use Loctite Naval Jelly rust dissolver, available at Home Depot, just follow instructions on bottle If the steel on the frame looks like it can be repainted then move forward with stripping the paint with a quality paint remover, make sure you read all safety precautions before starting your project. The paint department guys can also advise on best techniques and product to be used. For the chrome small parts Step 1 , Clean the surface with a solvent, like mineral spirits Step 2. Soak chrome part in Evapo Rust for 24 hours, there is other brush on products you can buy at Home Depot or Amazon Step 3 Use a medium to fine steel-wool pad to get any remaining surface rust Step 3 Wipe clean and polish with chrome polish, I really like the brand "Simichrome" it's a paste and it really shines the chrome and alloy well. Good luck with your Varisty

    Hi Jay, still keeping the fleet together, I have many more in boxes waiting their turn to be restored. As far as the handle bar height, it could be how deep the quill stem is in the steerer tube, the wheels are all the same and the frame should be geometrically close, although that could be the difference based on the angle of the fork and headtube, the Sports Tourer has a shorter frame geometry compared to the longer Continental and Varsity, giving the ST a nicer sportier geometry.
