Replacing F250 Front Axle U-Joints and Seals
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Decided it was time to do the front U-Joints in the ol cattle chaser. It's a little more involved than just popping a driveshaft out, or in this case an axle, there's some special silliness that you have to do. Follow along for all the fun!

Check us out we’re playing the route 10 industrial lodge in Bayonne New Jersey this Saturday. All you can eat Free shrimp on me just let them know Bork sent you.there will also be Semi fresh raw oysters as well
Great video, convinced me to take my truck to the shop. Labor intensive and I do not have all those tools, big vises, pry bars, snap ring pliers, etc. But I loved the video and it helps me to talk to the repair people.
Today, I used this excellent tutorial to swap out my u joints, hubs, seals and locking hubs on both sides, 2005 F-250 Superduty 6.0. The best advice was to get that 36" tuning tool from Harbor Freight Tools. Everything went perfectly. Thanks for taking the time to post these videos.
Great video, i came to see how to use the tool lol, but I really laughed when you said you couldn’t remember what they call the clip, then said you remove it with your snap ring pliers.

Great video. I've been a mechanic for over 30yrs in the military, dealerships and mostly on my own vehicles. I've found that I can buy the tools, quality parts and do the work myself far less expensive than paying someone else to do it. Plus No One does the work as good as I do on my own vehicles because they either don't care, don't know any better or just hope the customer won't know/see where they cut corners, such as the simple things like cleaning up the dirty/rusted areas. I've rebuilt several front end suspensions, engine work, etc. using OTC or as good of tools and saved thousands of dollars. I appreciate you being another "good Ole boy" that is also intelligent and articulate so that the video is a good one. USAF retired also. Thanks again!!
Nice video and explanation! I have this on the to do list for the end of the month. Thank you!
Thanks for the video, it really helped me to understand, what I have to do. I have a 2000 F250 super duty. I guess there will be some differences, but I will work that out and great point about replacing the seals. Thx again. Great job.

You can actually take the whole brake assembly off as on piece and save the step of removing the caliber and brake pads.
When I popped my axel off I wedged a socket behind the pry bar to get extra leverage it helped make it even easier.

lisle 38700 snap ring pliers are very helpful for this job
Tip... knock that vacuum seal out from behind before you remove the axle. I use an air chisel with a pointed tip to gently persuade it. Makes the axle come out so much easier. Like the videos and yes...lose the fn radio.
I wish I watched this beforehand... I put the inner seal on the shaft and now it's a pita to get the last little bit in
You can save the step of removing the tierods, just cut the wheels all the way one direction, remove both wheelbearing bolts, then cut the wheels all they way back the other way and remove the last 2. I used a Cobalt 24 volt compact 1/2 impact gun. Its a little tight on one bolt but you can get it.
How do you like those new shocks on her? Is the ride any better lol I thought about getting those
Thank you
What is the part number for the inner seal?
How long did it take you per side on this?
Thank you or posting. Pry bar saved me, Workshop manual calls for punching the seal out from the back of knuckle... right.....

The U-Joints are direct from my local Ford house, #3249. The outer dust seal is SKF 16510. The inner 4WD Vacuum seal is Timken 710492. Be careful on the vacuum seal, some trucks had a different sized shaft. You'll have to measure your driveshaft diameter inside the knuckle to ensure you get the right seal.

Should be a TIMKEN 710685, but make 100 % sure with either your dealership parts department or wherever you are getting your parts.
Hey, so uh.....was the axle shaft hard to turn once you put the outer bearing back on? And did it free up at all after you drove the truck? I'm putting mine back together and it doesn't feel like it did before. I don't think I'm going to hurt anything by putting it back together and running it, but I'm just wondering.
@USAF99
3 жыл бұрын
Hard to turn, no. It should feel a little tighter but not hard to turn. Did you use the installation tool I used on the vacuum seal? Did the U-Joint move freely before you put the axle back in? If the U Joint is stiff give the caps a couple sharp smacks with a steel hammer to set them correctly. You might just have one off center slightly.

You know, that's a good question. I would assume there is something there but maybe not as critical. Use Fordparts.com and your VIN number to see a breakdown of your front axle to see what is required for this job on your vehicle. Be sure to report back, I am interested in what you find!
I didn't think the music was that distracting I could still hear what you were saying
Would a bad axle seal cause hub bearing wear by any chance? And when you change your wheel bearing assbly, am I able to pull out the axle ever so slightly play?
@patriotmotors6011
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ariel, the bad seal doesn't cause bearing wear. It is the other way around. More specifically, a bad bearing could cause the seal to deteriorate over time, but the biggest contributor to seal damage is a bad u-joint on this axle shaft. The bad u-joint will cause excessive play in the shaft which will destroy the seal in short order.
@kuningmuda

@@kuningmuda Yes, play in the ujoint is clearly identifiable, depending on how much it is. I'm doing ujoints on a 2012 F250 right now. I'll post a video on my FB page later. These joints were totally shot. A blind man could have spotted these.

They should be fine, just don't use the four wheel drive and put torque on them until you can swap them out. Obviously, it goes without saying that, unless I saw them I could not give you a definitive answer and driving the truck with a known worn part is dangerous, and at your own risk.

@USAF99

The point of the video is to show how to get down to them, pressing u-joints in and out of a driveshaft or axle is pretty straight forward. For most viewers, it would be a very tedious watch if I were to show that. On the flipside of that, you aren't the first comment to mention this, maybe I will do one detailing what I do to change them.
I ordered 6695 for my 2000 f-250 4x4 will this work ok
Sun of a gun dont have that bushing set tool gonna have to make do with somthing.Think the only thing u didn't mention is the snap ring pliers need to be a long reach pair. We bought 5 pair and still had to borrow a set from a local garage.

@USAF99

I am more than happy to admit if I am wrong, nobody is perfect. I am however, in this instance, pretty sure I am correct. What year truck and axle were you working on? 2004 and down is a different seal and is easy to confuse. 2005 through at least 2008 is this seal and installed the way I said. The two seals DO look similar, however they are different both in the way they look and get installed. Also, if you look @13:29 I haven't removed the seal yet, and the old one is present the way I describe to install it. That's from Ford.
