Replacing Corroded Cast Iron Sewer Pipes with ABS Plastic

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I needed to replace some 50 year old cast iron pipe under the house with ABS plastic as the cast iron was leaking and corroded. The process shown in the video also works for replacing galvanized drains. This is a relatively difficult DIY project and I would strongly suggest against it unless you have experience with plumbing and using power tools. This also requires higher grade tools than what most DIYers will have, so keep that in mind. However, even if you have to buy tools, replacing the damaged cast iron throughout the house myself saved $3,000!
Plumbing Supplies I Recommend:
Sioux Chief ApeTape pipe strap

ZipStick DWV Hangers (supports pipe better than strap but more expensive)

smart guy- especially like the warnings about weight of pipe, possible tile cracking, etc. This has given me the confidence to piece-meal replacement of some of my cast iron (Fernco good) with the ultimate goal of going full ABS

You never realize how heavy cast iron pipe is until you pick up a piece! Good luck with your project and happy plumbing!

Great video. I need to replace a bunch of leaking iron in my townhouse garage. I like the ideal of using ABS. Someone took care of 2 neighbors and it was $2000 with new iron. I'm going to go the abs route.

ABS is a great material, but if your pipe goes through the garage firewall then that section must be metal. For example, if there is a garage sink, then you could install ABS pipe, then transition to steel just for the section through the wall.

It's pretty easy! The hardest part is cutting the pipe, you'll need a powerful Sawzall and special blades. Installing ABS and PVC is straight forward and forgiving. Ram bits let you take apart a joint if you make a mistake.

Just use a thin wheel grinder to cut the pipe

I prefer diamond wheels.. super smooth cut without all the debris from the metal cutting disc

Offset closet flanges should be avoided at all cost. They don’t allow the toilet to flush properly and will inevitably cause issues

its a law that ferncos must be outside of the house and at least one foot buried under ground, I would not recommend using a fernco like this because after a while they tend to fail

In my area Fernco fittings can be underground but shielded fernco is required if it's buried deep. They're also allowed above ground. Check your local code before starting any project.
