REPLACING BOAT FUEL TANK Filled with HOLES!! Back in Action!

We recently discovered our boat had a gas leak. We ordered a New fuel tank from Ezell Industries and they shipped it straight to HMS, Howard Marine Service. HMS removed our old fuel tank, repaired some fiberglass holes in the fuel compartment, then put in our new tank! They did an amazing, clean job of the whole project!

Hi really glad you made this video. I’m about to get a 49 or 50 year old Pennyan. It’s always been cared for and has already had the tank replaced just a couple years ago. If owner hadn’t taken such good care of it I would not even think about it. I remember the day he brought it home the first day. I looked it and now 40 some years later I can be the new caretaker:-) As you can tell I’m pretty happy about it. Moving to Florida next week and I don’t want to go with out a boat. I’m going to sell my HD springer because at 63 I feel I’m getting to old to go riding. Florida heat helps to make that decision much easier. Thank you for sharing your great videos, keep sharing I look forward to seeing them.

I'm a fisherman here in Hawaii and just seeing how easily your dad poked holes into the tank gave me chills. It's ok if your car breaks down in the middle of the road but extremely dangerous if your boat breaks down in the middle of the ocean. Glad to see you had the whole tank replaced rather than just patching it.

It's refreshing to see a boat shop actually do everything just right. Our shops around here suck ass. Guy even knew the density of the foam and that it was made just for installing fuel tanks.

I am glad you guys listened to advice from commenters about not using the boat until fixed. I was on board a small boat about the size of yours which caught fire due to a fuel leak. It didn't explode like you see in the movies but we emptied three fire extinguishers on it before realizing we could not contain the fire. It burned to the water line but we were not hurt. Only lost all our fishing gear and other stuff which we generally replaced; it was good we had insurance.

It looks to me that HMS did a great job of making repairs. One never really knows how degraded something is till it is removed and inspected. I would say that you all were piloting a hazardous boat and didn't realize the danger one was in. Thank goodness that you were persuaded to do the repairs. The Boat is in proper condition now and safe. I am happy to see that. That first fill up is going to bite a bit $$$. Safe boating and have a wonderful time fishing. Yes I am interested in knowing about the expense of boat ownership in Florida. It isn't cheap here where I live.

Looks like it's my turn now. I reached out to Andrew at HMS today. I had a very pleasant conversation. So nice that I am not even going to shop around. He will be the one to ultimately replace my tank. Presuming the tank is the culprit. I am 99% sure it's leaking.

  • @HoldFast-un2fc

I know that had to be costly for sure. You could have saved the old tank and repaired for a lot less and got more use out of it. But one thing I would suggest is a wire from the tank going to a salt zinc and that is where the true pitting in the metal of boats comes from. There is other video that explains in more detail about zincs. Great video!

Saltwater corrodes everything, even stuff that convention wisdom would think doesn't rust, and you can't keep it out of any compartment of the boat. Maybe it's water vapor. Even stuff I put in the console box which should be dry, stainless steel stuff, aluminum stuff, all starts corroding if I leave it in the boat a few months. Electrical connections corrode even if they're sealed and heat shrunk unless they're tinned. It's the harshest environment.

The reason the tank corroded was because the foam was against the tank.. I’m a big advocate for putting in flotation foam in boats but around the gas tank is bad. The holes in the compartment were for draining water that made it into the fuel tank compartment. Even with the thicker aluminum and the powder coating on the tank, the water will still get into the compartment and not be able to drain out and dry. The foam will get water logged then hold on to water against the tank and corrode it out quicker than last time

Man o' man I hope your boat insurance covered all this, I can imagine just the labor alone is almost the value of your outboard engine and the tank probably a small fortune. Great documentation on tank replacement, great video but I hope anyone that has a boat will never go through this, it looks like it put a hole in your account. Your boat goes through harsher environment than boat owners that have their boat in land storage. I have a 21' center console I pamper it as best as I can, the only thing I detest is the annual maintenance of complete wash+compound+polish+wax the entire hull. If you maintain your own boat by yourself it's hard but if you have friends the easier and faster things get done. Those rich folks that own 30'+ boats with multiple engines that must be a annual fortune to winterize, 100hr maintenance or a complete detail. Thanks again for a great video, tight lines.
