Replacing Axles on 1972 AIRSTREAM in the STREET!

Thanks to our friends, Juan and Michelle from‪@BeginningfromthisMorning‬, we were able to replace our axles in order to get back on the road. In our last video we explained how we had almost lost a wheel while driving! What could have ended very badly was caught by Jonathan at a stop not far from our friends' home. They allowed us to stay in their driveway while waiting for new axles and helped us install them. We cannot thank them enough for their generosity during a stressful time.

I would guess metal fatigue did for your axles. You have driven a lot on them! That was a beautifully clear description of what to do to replace the axles. Your friends are awesome, btw.

How do you know when your trailer needs new axles? I have a 71 Tradewind.

I know it’s a pretty major deal, but in the big picture this is almost just maintenance - Considering a new set of Michelin’s set us back over $1200.Good to know! Thanks.

Hi, thank you for sharing your video! If you don't mind my asking, who did your purchase your new axles from? We are hoping to replace ours soon as well! Thank you for your time 😊

We’ve bought axels twice now, both from different shops depending on where we were(AZ and IN). Dexter won’t let you buy directly which is a pain, but since they ship freight you’ll have to go through a local dealer (unless you can find the exact ones you need online, but unlikely with an older Airstream)

I may have missed it, but you don't mention reattaching or detaching the shocks. do the 72 models not have them? my 1970 Overlander has a bracket off the downslung arm for a shock absorber that then goes forward of the axle.

We took them off during the original renovation because they never fit right after replacing the original axels. The torsion works just fine for shock absorbing.

NIce job on replacing your axles. I'm about to do the same on 1974 Airstream. I'm replacing the original axles. When you replaced yours did you have issues with the frame cut out fitting the new axles and the holes on the mounting bracket? Do you remember what axle size you went with?

Well..we replaced them originally during the renovation, and yes I think there were some minor modifications needed. Couldn't tell you the axle details, though. It's been so long 😂

@@TinyShinyHome Right of course. Are these new ones the #11 size frame with 12" drums from Dexter? Your trailer is fantastic! Very inspiring.

nice job.. one tip on the new brakes and or magnets.. What i do is go down the road when traffic if light.. speed up to about 30-40 MPH and use the hand control to engage the trailer brakes HARD slowing you down to like 10,, release the control and speed up again to 40, hit brakes hard,, etc.. I do this some 3-4 times in quick succession,, after the last time drive for 10 or so min without hitting brakes to allow for drums/pads etc to cool. This process is called,,, "Bed-In" the brakes pads.. it very important on performance brakes but will do you for regular stuff as well.. thanks for good video.. www.hawkperformance.com/how-to

Why didn't you upgrade to disk-brakes?

  • @TinyShinyHome

Because they're crazy expensive and complicated. And we were already paying way too much for new axles. And the brakes we had worked fine - it was the bearings that gave out.

@@TinyShinyHome Was it wear and tear or miscalculated maintenance (ie, you expected them to last longer between checks than they did)?

  • @TinyShinyHome

@@indianagoldens We think it was just a freak failure. We had re-packed the bearings within the last 6 months. The first set of axels had a freak break failure that took us weeks to diagnose and fix, so even with Dexter's pretty good track record here stuff happens. 🤷‍♂️
