Replacing Axle U-Joints on a Jeep Cherokee

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Replacing Axle U joints on a front Dana 30 front axle. This process is very similar to other axle models and vehicle models but today I will show you how to do it on a Jeep Cherokee XJ. This process may be similar on other Jeep models such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, and Comanche. I will show you how to do the whole job from start to finish. If you have any questions that the video does not cover make sure to leave them below.
Thanks for watching! Make sure to like, share, and subscribe to keep these how-to videos coming.

Good video, don't worry if people bitch because you didn't cover every possible situation. Not sure if you do mechanics for a job, haven't watched any of your other videos. That said when your working on brakes , if you haven't pressure washed it or cleaned them thoroughly first gloves gloves gloves, I cant count the number of times the instructors at school emphasized this. Asbestos may have been officially taken out of the production of brake pads and clutches, but most are made over seas and you should not trust your health to the quality control of their production. Brakes , and clutches and the dust they create should be treated as a serious hazard to your health. I know if you don't normally wear latex gloves they feel stupid for the first while, but if your hands are into automotive fluids on the regular, you can develop skin problems and sensitivity to particular fluids later on in life. Some can wreck your hands completely others can just give you a rash in response to certain chemicals. Not trying to nanny you or shit like that just want to try to save you some trouble. I am a heavy duty equipment mechanic so that is where this information comes from.

Very helpful! I am currently halfway through this job on my '88 Cherokee. One hub came off readily, but on the other side It took four hours of pounding with a chisel at the flange of the hub to get the hub loose. I learned something through this exercise: before you try to get the hub out, (after you remove the bolts), cock the wheel so you can see the back of the hub (right where the U joints are located), then spray PB Blaster liberally around the circumference of the hub (where it joins the carrier) and let it soak a while. That's how I finally got the hub out!

Good video. 2 points: Instead of jamming a screwdriver into the rotor, use the brakes to do the job they're intended for. Don't hammer on the hub. You'll burnish the bearing accelerating bearing failure. Leave the bolts in but loose and hit the heads of the bolts. Then pry.

  • @OutJeeping

    @OutJeeping

    8 жыл бұрын

Yeah the u joints definitely need replacing, first the joints will get dry and stiff like mine then they will wear and get really loose and make clicking noises when turning and then break eventually and that could cause a lot of damage. There shouldn't be any play in the axle shaft except for gear backlash.

  • @johnmohanmusic

Question: Did you also do the right side front axle u-joint? I'm asking because according to my Haynes Manual when removing the right side front axle, one has to first remove the Front Axle Shifter Motor. This is a bit complicated as it involved making sure the shift fork is reinstalled in the exact position it was in when removed, and also one must use a new o-ring and a new gasket. If you did both sides did you have to remove and reinstall the front axle shifter motor? EDIT: Never mind. After doing a bit more research, I found that it was just some earlier Jeeps that had a vacuum powered shift to 4WD that had these Front Axle Shifter Motors. My '98 Cherokee does not have one and I'll bet yours doesn't have one either. For those that do, they have to remove this motor - if they don't, they will be able to pull the axle but they won't be able to get it to go back in as the shifter fork will get in the way.

update, it only took me 7 hours. Hubs were a bear to get off but after much pounding and swearing they finally popped off. getting the u-joint off the axles was pretty time consuming but I really took my time. I used one of those giant c-clamps with the plunger on it to get them out (sorry don't know what they are called). The receiving end was difficult to get aligned properly and I actually managed to slightly bend one of my yokes with it. I beat on it with a hammer and was able to get back the proper clearance to get the clips in. Smooth sailing after that. Everything went back together nicely, and I feel good about spending a day in the sweltering heat fixing my own jeep. good stuff keep the videos coming.

You got the wrong rotors or bearing hubs. They changed both in 99 and 99 was a split year so once you figure out if it was earlier or later always get those types of parts for 2000 or 1998 depending on when your 1999 was manufactured.

What part of the country are you in? I'm in the rust belt, so nothing works easily. I planned to do u-joints on my '95 ZJ, but when I got the shafts out I found that they were so rusty that I couldn't even find the u-joint clips. To get my hub bolts out I had to heat the ears of the hub with an oxy-acetylene torch. Good thing I was replacing hubs anyway. I got delayed for a couple of days while I waited for new halfshafts and hub bolts to come from Rock Auto. In the meantime, I decided to take apart the rusty old shaft for practice. I finally got the clips out and pressed out the caps with my Harbor Freight 12 ton press. I got stuck on the second cap. It pressed out ok, but it is fused to the cross. So far I tried to get the cap off with a pipe wrench and by clamping the cap in my vise. If I needed to make it work, next I would carefully cut the cap off with my plasma cutter.

Bro I tried going to autozone today to buy these joints and the only thing that came up on their computer is a front drive shaft u-joint so I bought two well turns out the head on the u-joint it’s self is to small. What the fuck????? How do I find these joints??? Some GD links left in the video description would have been a huge help

Couldn't you just put it in 4 wheel low and it would lock up being able to take the castle nut off with out the screwdriver.

"13mm 12 point" lol hex head or 6 point is better. Especially with older vehicles. It's less likely to strip the nut..

Nope not on these hub bolts, the bolts themselves are 12 point.

I still don't know how my sister-in-law got into my computer, but I am the one who did the work. However, I cheated because I used a slide hammer to pop the hub loose. Because I am a Christian, I asked for additional guidance from the Man Upstairs (G.I.language reference to Jesus Christ. Not all G.I. language words are vulgar.). Now that I am comfortable doing this, as an Army veteran, I can speed things up using the Army expedient of using applied vulgarism.

David Frisch The purpose of this video was to show the process from start to finish on disability of the vehicle to get at the u joints. As mentioned in the video I wasn't able to film actually changing the u joint but showed how to do this. So I don't see the reason for your complaining.
