How To Replace A V8 LandCruiser Starter Motor (Don't Attempt Before Watching)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

#landcruiser #4x4 #diy
Guess what?
That's right. This video is about replacing a starter motor. A notoriously difficult to change starter motor, all condensed into a 10 minute video! How good, right?
Wrong. It's a horrible job, takes a long time, and needs to be done right so you only have to do it once. This video is how to do it once.
Also, the algorithm will hate this video because my last one didn't do well (who knew nobody likes april 1st sanding videos). So like, comment and subscribe to help the algorithm... even before this video premieres!
That's all. Subscribe, Press the things. Buhbye

So , little old grandma here. Got an 80 series Landcruiser 4 weeks ago. Newbie at all this 4x4 stuff. Changed the starter motor a couple of weeks ago. Soooo easy. Recondition the original one and keep it as spare. That V8 is terrifying.

Did almost the same job on my 76, bar the replacing of the starter motor, a few weeks back. Soooo many pipes and stuff needs to come out to get the inatkes off for a clean. A tip, and just for a second, a old dishwasher makes a great parts washer. They are cheap to pickup second hand and 65-70C temps and some dishwasher soap do a excellent job cleaning off grease and grime.

The starter location inside the engine valley and the Alternator at the bottom of the motor was two factors that influenced my decision to get a 2.8 Troop carrier

Better than the other way around I guess. At least bump start is an option with an easy alternator swap

I learned long ago it was far easier to take the extra twenty minutes to remove the bullbar and take the front wheels completely off and sit it on the disc rotors when doing major engine surgery on a lifted 4x4.

Yeah this was the original plan but I opted not to for the sake of coolant retention. But we all saw how that turned out 🥺 it was all held in until the EGR was removed, then the air got sucked in and the coolant went everywhere

Toyota states 5x reuse provided you torque them correctly. Do not overtighten them. As for moving the fart inhaler, it's plumbed into the cooling system, so I left it for simplicity. The only reason to remove it would be saving a couple of kg, so would be a bit pointless.

I've ordered a new 2.8L 79, should be arriving in a couple of months. Couldn't believe how good the little 2.8 drove, way better than my Troopy V8. Hopefully it'll last a couple of hundred thousand KMs, and after that I don't care because I'll probably be dead!

I'd probably be most keen to see a comparison between an auto converted V8 vs a 2.8. or manual vs manual. Although it does sound like an impressive engine so far, hopefully there isn't a catch.

Another good reason to avoid these vehicles. What a joke of engineering, plus the bonus alternator placement, then there's the narrow rear dif and the 1970s interior and leaf springs etc etc. But they are so tough, aren't they?

I've had this car for about 100,000km and this is the only issue it's ever had. It took a while, sure, but any V8 by nature will have either the starter or the alternator in there by design.
