Thanks. So many of the other videos have a lot more disassembly involved. I followed yours and was able to get the reverse pulley bolt and main pulley off with just a little pressure using a pry bar. Saved a lot of time. Thanks for posting.

I have my dads 1987 model. It has the Kohler 8.5 motor and still runs but you can no longer get parts for that motor. Last year it blew the spark plug out of the head. I helicoiled it and have it running again. The motor runs great but This may be my next fix for it.

Yes sir. There great machines. You can get most parts for these things except on the older engine sometimes it's difficult to find some parts. HFT has "super coupons" for these engines a few times a year. Hard to beat them for the price. These old tillers where made well and made to work.

Thanks for the instructive video. Took an hour to drive to HF to get the motor and only 2 hours to get it installed and running. Didn't have an issue with the oil sensor. This new motor is quite a bit lighter than the old cast iron 7hp unit so a bit less traction but it starts and runs fine so far.

I replaced the Briggs with a Honda 200 GX a few years ago. I left my low oil sensor plugged in. Just over fill it with Just a little oil. These engines are lighter than the original. I’m thinking about getting a steel plate weighing about 20 lbs. drill some holes and mounting it to the bottom of the engine. Should match the original in weight. Next time around I may try the predator engines.

That's not a bad idea. so far this thing has worked flawless. I figured I couldn't beat the price of the predator engine. So far its paying off. Time will Tell how good it does.

My Dad bought a Horse with the Techumse engine back on the early 1970's and that engine is still running like new. If I bought a Horse tiller with one on I would rebuild it rather than replace it because the balance it provides when using the tiller is the best package Troy Built offered. I have a Horse with the better Kohler engine and that package is not nearly as easy to use. The only way I would replace one of Troybuilts engines is with the Kohler diesel engine. Close to the same height setting as the original, but slightly heavier but can run all day long on very little fuel and till full delth with no problem with all that tourqe.

@@michaelbarrett1914 I just got one of these tillers a few days ago. Barn find for free. Still has the original 6 HP Tecumseh engine. All it needed was a new head gasket, a little tinkering with the original carb, new oil and Bob's your uncle. Works like new.

Did the same swap, but mine aint working right. Every time i put it in reverse, the bolt holding the reverse disc tightens up and stops the motor. Any ideas?

Hey Jim, Hmm that does seem odd. Sounds like somthing isn't turning freely. I would take that fully off and see what it's like spinning the reverse by hand.

Didn't all old Horse models come with a 8hp engine? If so why replace it with a 6.5hp engine? There are several videos of people using the same replacement you did, but I don't get the replacing with a smaller engine. It's something I need to figure out because I will be doing it before next spring. I have been looking at the 8hp Predator, but should I be looking at the 6.5?

Hey thanks for watching. The answer is no they all didn't have an 8hp engine. Some did. Mine came factory with a 6hp tecumseh engine. Here is a link you can look up the horse model tiller serial #'s and it will tell you what year they changed stuff. Hope this helps. acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:VA6C2:e542543d-4b42-43b8-ab58-a4b218862c4b

I am at that cross road as well..Mine has an 8hp kohler . The 8 hp Predator shaft is thicker and will be an issue. They don't show the mount pattern for the 8. The 6.5 seems to power it well, isa there a difference in modern performance? Torque?

Hey thanks for watching. I'm not sure. The 6.5 hp predator has been great. No issue with it being underpowered. Mine also came factory with a 6hp tecumseh engine though. It wouldn't scare me one but to take the old one off and install the 6.5 predator. That option is still alot cheaper than an new tiller.
