This is the best video on KZread on this procedure. I literally just replaced the cracked driver's side mirror glass on my wife's 2004 Subaru Outback, using a heat gun, and removal was quick and easy! Putting the new glass in was more difficult because the backing plate wants to move around, but I placed a plastic trim tool behind the backing plate to keep it from pushing in. Nothing broke, job was successful. Thank you much!

Many thanks for the hot tip. The old glass was shattered into 100 bits and had to be teased out. But with a bit of heat the new glass popped in just like you said - quick and easy! aspec42: sounds like you need the convex rather than flat mirror glass for the passenger side.

This question is about unheated passenger mirror on Subaru Forrester 2003. I have both a new mirror and the old mirror which came off in one piece. But I just tried holding the old one in place just to practice and it does not lie flat in the housing. It looks like the center of the plastic inside is bowed way out so that a flat piece of glass is never going to lay flat. Any assistance in understanding this issue would be appreciated.

I’ve been driving around with a smashed passenger side mirror for months now when I accidentally cracked it with the hard plastic end of an ice scraper during a wicked snow storm last winter. Got a little over zealous as the snow was coming down faster than I could clear it off the car. WHAM.

That would require replacing the door wiring harness- not an easy task.

Whats the extra step for heated mirror or ia that an entire disass emble

I have not worked on a heated mirror but I would expect there would be a wire connection that would need to be unplugged.

Mirror has a thin heating element that is between the backing plate, and glass, with sticky tape on both sides. My old glass came out in 3 pieces, so element was left behind, but I carefully peeled it off backing plate. Behind it are two, pull-off/push on wire terminals. Pretty easy.

I forgot to add, the replacement glass already has the heating element bonded to it with tape, so it goes on as one piece (make the electrical connections first).

Maybe this tip is good for broken glass(no chance for destruction),but for one piece mirror is risky. Today i killed my new (new-used) . I try to put from reserve part to mirror housing on car,and mission was failed. Ps maybe my mirror hadn't heated to good temperature. please do it gently! ;)

Agreed. Gentle is very important. Do not hurry. I also placed a folded towel on the ground under the mirror in case it fell to the ground it would not shatter.

Zac Camann To make sure I got a proper fit I ordered the mirror from Subaru. Some of the cheap online mirrors are not always the proper fit and some are lesser quality. I preferred to get the original part.
