Just got done. Took roughly 3 hours from start to finish. Beating out the transmission was a bear. Ended up using an asphalt tamper to get more leverage and a 2 pound sledge. That in itself took an hour and a half. Thank you for this video!

Thanks for doing this video! I gave the exact same wash machine and there are issues with the agitator. It seems it my be the washplate bit if it isnt the issue then is the transmission. Thank you for pinning the top comment, too! That'll save me some time if i need to replace the transmission. God bless you for all of your help and willingness to post some advice that'll help the next person.

Thank you!!!! Saved my wife and I a lot of money. I did run into an issue with the rotor though. The splines were so corroded in the transmission that the rotor was sieved and broke off in the transmission. Called around to a bunch of different stores and found one that was in stock for not too much and we’re on our way home now to install it. Your video was the ONLY one I could find about the same washer we have.

Thank you Clayton, great video, this got me off to a successful project. I adapted a few things; unscrewed the transmission first, used a scissor jack braced with a 2x4 into the shoulder of tub top (against the metal not the plastic) to press the tub off the transmission shaft which dropped to the floor. Also, I have an agitator tower that required a 12" extension to reach with an electric drill - I couldn't get the leverage with a hand tool. I had to tap the tub back on the new shaft by simply using the same 2x4 and dead blow carefully around the shaft until seated. Repairs are costly in my neighborhood, this saved me easily $300 in labor.

Fantastic presentation on this newer model! Only one I could find similar to my unit. Very smart to use plumber's lube on the seal. My unit failed after 9 months under waranty. Still waiting on the manufacturer's parts for the clutch. Two months waiting! Rotor screw came loose and caused the failure to drive parts.

Also I did see another video that shows how to get the agitator off by using a shoe string and it works. You take a shoe string and push down around the seam at the agitator and the tub. Then work it down until it slides under and pull ends together above. So string basically be around about the center. Then you just keep snapping it upward and it popped right off after about the 5th time.

Thanks so much for sharing this and for showing all of the steps needed to do the repair. My Kenmore 700 series washer appears to be pretty much the same machine as yours. Mine is making a high pitched metallic screeching noise when the drum turns during a cycle (it doesn't do it if I turn the drum by hand). After watching your video, I'm thinking that it has to be the transmission as it's really the only moving part under the washer that could make the metallic sound.

You can skip a whole lot of steps if you actually want to go to the expense of buying the parts to make this repair you only need to remove four bolts on the bottom and the wash plate and spanner nut could a 23-in 2x4 miter the end so you can fit it up inside the tub easily put a piece of wood on top of the transmission to protect it in case you're not replacing it put a bottle check in between the 2x4 and on top of the transmission spine couple clicks with your hand and it'll slide out like butter no need to remove the top no need to remove the tub unless you want to

Yes, my washer sounded like a jet engine when it went into spin cycle. I’ve seen situations where coins have fallen under the agitator plate and makes a loud noise when the washer is in spin cycle, so you might want to remove the agitator plate and check for coins or other debris. Otherwise, it’s likely the transmission.

Thank you much for your video. I thought I had the same washers like most videos BUT like you said. It’s for the older models. Taking off the bolt and the plate was a pain. I noticed my agitator had play to it. After getting the bolt off I noticed it wasn’t secured all the way down. It was seized and I used anti-seize on the threads of the bolt then tightened it back down and took it off again. For the plate, I used a pry bar, a hook pick, then moved it back and forth. It got loose enough for me to put a hammer (nail remover side) in and used that leverage to finally get it off. What a pain! I will use your video if I ever have transmission issues. Question. Is the transmission rod supposed to move up and down with play? I’m getting play when I pull the rod up and down.

You forgot to mention the real reason why it was such a bear to remove the inner tub from the gearcase/transmission. There is a rubber and steel washer mounted on the shaft of the gearcase that fits into a groove on the bottom of the inner tub. When you removed the tub, it left the washer behind inside the groove in the tub.. This is a water tight seal that is supposed to prevent water from seeping into the bearing. If you leave the old bearing in the tub, it will not be water tight and it will fail very soon. causing you to replace the gearcase again. Plus I believe there won't be the same amount of space left on the upper threads then you re-assemble the tub. You may also be stretching, or possibly cracking the outer tub when you tighten down the nut.. Check the old transmission and compare it to the new one. you can see the washer installed on the new transmission. it's probably missing from the old one.

AND do you want to repair it again in a few years for some other gearbox failure? Just replace it with new.!
