Very handy to have in the studio - seems incredibly well thought out . . . the designers obviously know what's what for bassists. (I'm a guitarist, occasional bass for a session if we're in a hurry, so perfect for me!). Great demo, cheers.
I did not like the SCR either. After lugging 810s & 410HLFs, they give us a tone monster that fits in a backpack. Great stuff!
Great review. The pedal we were expecting from Ampeg. 🤘🏻
I have one and absolutely love it.
I got one a few months ago and really like it - enough that I started looking at something similar for my guitars. What was really striking was how much better Ampeg did with outputs. The guitar amp in a box that seems to be getting the most love had one single 1/4" output. No XLR for long runs, no dry signal to run to a desk for recording in parallel with wet signal. No signal without IR to run into an amp. No headphone out. No auxiliary input. As well as sounding good, Ampeg have really committed to making this as versatile as you could hope for. - I would have loved a mute switch though, mostly so I could run a tuner from a spare output instead of having to put it in my FX line to do double duty as a mute switch
The next step is to add an FX-Loop and those box sized preamp (e.g: this and the alpha omega photon) will be perfect for (almost) every purpose. Hope they'll get to that soon!

Preamps don't necessarily need effects loops, as one can place effects between preamp and poweramp.
@Mineblocker91
Жыл бұрын
@@Ninjametal Sure, but let's say that for any reason you need to use both some extra effects and the cab simulator: without a loop you can't do that (without added external gear), so to have one would mean having an even wider range of possibilities in a small sized box
@RyanDenley
Жыл бұрын
@@Ninjametal With this pedal being billed as something that can "replace your rig" that's not really an option. You can't run any modulation, delay, reverb, etc., after the drive of this unit (where they sound great) without running those effects after the entire preamp pedal which negates the benefit of having a cab sim and XLR out of this pedal be your only feed that goes to your recording interface or PA system. Running those effects after this preamp pedal would let you enjoy the sound of them on stage through your amp (if you're using one) and the audience would just have to imagine what they might sound like.

Every week there’s some new latest and greatest pedal or gear and typically all the KZread bassist we all know and love are reviewing these on the same day or within a few days of the each other. I do enjoy the reviews and thus only speak for myself here, but perhaps some balance showing what you do with all this gear, for example live performances, music you are recording, covers, whatever. Most of us amateur bassists (I have no shame in saying that’s me) are not picking up a new pedal or bass every week or 2. I’m not saying eliminate reviews but it would be nice to also be nice see some of how you, and others too, use the gear as a musician, what you are doing and creating musically. IMO.

I did not like this pedal at all. People have written about it, but in short: convoluted. Just getting it to not clip was a challenge. Engaging cab sim changes the volume completely bc that has its own volume knob - it resets volume to 50% whenever you change cab sims - and cab sim doesn't even sound that great. Turn the bass way down, turn the main vol to 75%, turn the Level to 50%, turn the cab sim level to 25%... you see? Just choreographing the gain stages on this this is a puzzle. Contacted tech support. Their response - "Just turn it down". So I bought a preamp to turn the signal down? I can barely hear this thing at that point. I have since bought a Darkgless B7K Ultra - same price. It's a dream. Loadable IRs that sound fantastic. Much louder signal, warmer, no issues with clipping, no redundant volume knobs to worry about. I don't know how the SGT got it through user testing. I gave it a chance. I thought, "ok, maybe I'm doing something wrong". Put it aside, tried it another day. Just awful experience. Darkglass nailed it. Great clean tone. Great drive tone. Simple controls.

I didnt particularly care for the distortion on the SCR pedal either, but I though the clean sound was good. It sounded particularly good when put in front of a Darkglass pedal. My last gig I just brought my pedal board and the chain was Super Symmetry - SCR - Vintage Ultra then DI out to the board and it sounded really good
Great review, thanks
Showing it as live amp sim with pedals in front would be cool

Nice!!
I bought one when it first came out and after a lot of back and forth with it and my Sansamp. I decided to send it back. It sounds great, just not my sound I can get with my current board. I was hoping it would replace my board. The compressor is not great and the drive is meh. I'm sure it will fit a lot of people's sound, just not mine.
Dear Patric. Can you maybe make a comparison video between this and the tech 21 vt di box in the future? I'm not sure which one I want to buy,

I don’t understand where do you plug this into?… a rocket amp or a stand alone cabinet? and what is a preamp? Thanks in advance
I bet this would work great with the Captor X IR Bass Cabs!
I'd like to see a comparison between this and the Two Notes Revolt Bass amp sim. They're the same price
Have you seen the Markbass tube pedal?
sounds good but is it parallel processing like Darkglass?
Ive had mine for a month now … It’s “fairly ok” but it’s NOT an “all in one” as described (no tuner/mute which impedes onstage instrument changes like say your switching from upright to electric) Good news: It does “vintage”, “fuzzy” and “muffled” really well which rounds out your sound and evens your dynamic rage. Not so good: It does not do “Crystal clear punchy” very well. When you bypass its pre section and use it as a DI it comes close but still a little too fuzzy. Battery power would have been nice too at least 4 hours. I’ll be keeping it but I had to buy a tuner so my dream of showing up for a festival gig with only my bass, patchcord and this pedal will not be a reality.
have you ever tried the amt bass crunch?
My brain: “ah yes, the Ampeg Sergeant Die pedal”

Y'know it's a cool bass DI preamp box but in price it's competing with the Two Notes Revolt(It's a bit more expensive even) and I really don't think it beats it out in terms of both diversity of sound and how good the sound is.

I haven’t seen a review of the revolt that made me feel like it would be worth it. Imo they’re both one trick ponies in the sense that you’ll probably find one sound and use that 99% of the time. I don’t flip through presets at gigs. I toggle drive and a few external effects throughout sets and that’s it. All that being said the ampeg sound really really good.

Patrick please tell us about your crazy cream colored bass to the left of your head lol
I tried out one of these today with a P bass and could pull a decent sound after an hour of tweaking. At the moment I'm running a Geddy Lee 2112-DI into a Sansamp Programmable bass driver (I know, I should only be using 1, not both!), but the drive sound and mids on the Geddy unit has a great mid focused tone, while the Sansamp bass driver provides a fat scooped Ampeg tone. I was hoping this Ampeg SGT-DI would replace them, but I'm not convinced. Your tones in this video are great though. Thanks for the vid.
Why? I've listend to your demo, I can't see any reason to. Just because it's new doesn't mean better. Like most newer gear with a bunch of options, how many are actually getting used?
If Ampeg had put this pedal out instead of the SCR-DI, it could have been a hit. But now the market is saturated, especially since the Origin Super Vintage seems to be the measure of all things. I personally miss a tuner. It doesn't have to be a fancy tuner, just a quick way to check the tuning. An extra tuner pedal means more cables, devices on stage, etc. No, I'd rather stick with my Tech21 Fly Rig or the SH-1. I have everything I need with me in an easy and lightweight package, and everyone so far was happy with the sound. Compression is not that important in my opinion, as FOH guys compresses the bass like crazy anyway in these days.
I had high expectations for this pedal and I hated it. I record my bass through JHS color box which gives me just the right punch and control of grit.
I like it. Needs a tuner out though.
Needs presets
SCR scrambler channel sucked, it sounded fizzy. The “clean” was meh, it didn’t stop Sansamp sales. This new pedal otoh, that’ll take a bite out of everything except the Broughton. That’s the reigning pedal if you like ultra lo and ultra high kicked in with more of an SVT2 sound. Sure, cab sim added is nice bc it’s a nod towards Ampeg trying to keep up with what’s been selling in the pedal game.
I would argue there is nothing stand out here. There's nothing here that the hx stomp can't do the same or better

@@zanotronThe SA programable DI is a gem. Though about buying this, but that pedal does just about everything I want and still sounds great. And is built like a tank.
I had the SCR 4 days and sold it ...bad sounding...also most of all the other SVT clone pedals out there...never have been satisfied with that mid scooped sound , which had no balls and grid....Not like my Ashdown little bastard ,which has it !...but will give that SGt a try one day...brand new toy is in town ..
I got like #420, just needed to say that.
I would call this the Darkglass effect. Suddenly there was a Finnish company building *insanely* high quality bass preamps/DIs, and everyone is scrambling (pun intended) to catch up. Ampeg's first effort was terrible, but this seems like a really good unit that still represents their essence. Really like the clean tones. The drive, unfortunately, isn't for me. Will have to spend the $50 extra on the B7K Ultra.
