Replace Spindle Bearings on Exmark Zero-Turn

HOW TO REPLACE SPINDLE BEARINGS on Exmark zero-turn mowers.
If your Exmark ZeroTurn makes a (different) roaring sound when you engage the deck, then the most likely fault is a bearing. There are a couple idler pulleys on top that have (non-replaceable) bearings so check them first. Release the belt and if any of the pulleys can be wobbled from side to side, then they need to be replaced.
When you are certain that the idlers are ok, then you need to repair the spindles. New spindles are from $130-$450 each! Total cost of (6) bearings and (12) o-rings is about $150 for my model - order for your EXACT model.

Hey bud thank you very much for your video. You learn something new everyday I've done spindle bearings before on my mowers and for the most part it's not too hard but that hot and cold technique is genius. Thank you for making my job easier.

Do not put bearings in freezer when they are frozen the will build up frost on inside of sealed bearing or any bearing then warm up and get water inside with permanent sealed grease

To get the bearings out I tippy tapped the bottom one from above with a long skinny screwdriver until I moved it about 1/8". There is a tiny lip you can just catch between the bearing and the spacer. Once you move it a little you can use a larger screw driver to tap out the bearing using the spacer. The spacer is something you can beat on it more forcefully and push them both out at the same time. The top on can then be driven out from the bottom with a piece of wood and a hammer. The bottom ones came out easier than the top ones. There seemed to be more corrosion on the top than the bottom. Also the bearings on the discharge side of the deck were the hardest to get out and the far left the easiest. Cleaned out the grooves for the O-rings with a toothbrush and brake cleaner and had no issues at all with the installation of the O-rings or the bearings. Cleaned up everything with a scotch bright pad to remove ALL rust or corrosion first. Hope that helps he skipped right by that.

Great video. Only thing I would suggest not doing is "tightening the shaft nut with the same tool you took it off with." I'd recommend using a torque wrench and torquing it to 25lbs more than recommended to seat bearings. Then back it off and torque it to required torque. Did this on $350 million dollar aircraft wheels and have since done it on everything needing a bearing. Since they are sealed bearings you can just torque to spec and be good to go. Just don't ugga dugga it to oblivion. Over/under torquing that bolt is one of the biggest cause of failure. On beat out by unbalanced blades.

One of the problems I ran into in the past when rebuilding my own spindles is that even with new bearings installed there was still some sloppy movement with the stem. At first I thought it was faulty bearings and later realized the stem had a very slight ware mark around it in the spot it came into contact with the old bearing. So the only way to make that right was to replace the bearings and the stem. So in some cases you would be better off to just buy the whole spindle.

But it ain't mine im only working on my friends spindle doing what he wants done to it if it where mine though i would replace the whole spindle. On his bearing the sleeves worn on the metal is why he's needing new bearings if that part on the bearing wasn't worn away it would still be good

You can heat hub but do not put bearings in freezer will build up frost inside sealed bearing that will turn to water after they warm up and contaminate sealed grease shorting bearing life.

So, it's really not necessary to remove the spindle housing from the front deck I am thinking?

Hey Ray ... I spent 24 years in Industrial Maintenance ... installed/changed lots of o-rings ... we always used just a light coating of plain old VASELINE to coat them. Never noticed any problems with them as a result of that. Consider this ... you normally would pump the housing full of grease anyway, so why use water-based lube to install them ???

Vaseline is petroleum based and will break down some o ring after time.

I bought a spindle kit from my Exmark dealer. The dealer claims the bearing has a 2000 hour life and said that the cause of the noise is the spindle. The kit comes with its own grease packet.

I have a 60" triton deck for a Lazer model LZ27KC605. Do you have a part number for the spindle kit? I assume this includes bearings, stem, and O-rings. I was looking at just replacing bearings but thinking I might replace stem too

@@hlanceboyd My Exmark is a LazerCT with a 54" deck so the part number would be different. The spindle bearings only need to be replaced after 2000 hours. The parts manual is available online from Exmark though some independent parts dealers websites.

I have a question,,,,I have a 2016 eXmark Lazer Z 60' with just over 300 hours and I am starting to hear one of the spindles making the "roaring" noise, especially when I disengage the blades. Question is, what is the "lifespan" of these bearings? I really didn't think I would be experiencing this issue this soon. Is this normal?

Thank you for your reply Ray! I don't recall hitting anything too hard. Of course you'll hit things from time to time, but nothing that I would think would be damaging. Crazy thing is, I don't really hear noise until I turn off the blades and as they are coming to a stop I hear a little grinding noise. As I'm mowing, I really don't feel or hear the noise. I'm going to keep an eye on it anyway to see if worsens. As far as my blades, usually change them out every 2-3 weeks depending on usage. I have a friend of mine sharpen my blades for me so I always have a sharp set to put on. Although I don't always watch him sharpen the blades, he does make sure the blades are balanced. I know that's a big deal. Hopefully it don't get any worse....Thanks again!

I don't hear anything unusual when powering up the PTO, sounds normal. Even when I'm mowing it all sounds and feels normal. I'm going to do a blade change in the morning, i'll check the clearance on the blade spin to see if there is any issues there. Thank you for the helpful tips.

Going out if you haven't already take the deck belt off and feel how it spins by hand and check any brake if there's one some mowers don't have pulley breaks but it doesn't hurt to check an see So that was 5 years ago you probably got it fixed by now
