Replace lithium tablet battery (3/5 wires with 2 wire) INSIGNIA NS-P16AT08

Ғылым және технология

EDUCATIONAL ONLY -- NOT INTENDED AS ADVICE.
BigSLICK fixes a defective Insignia NS-P16AT08 android tablet that, after only 1 year, developed a bad (open circuit) battery.
I show how the original "5 wires battery" (actually, 3 wires...) was replaced with a generic 2-wire lithium polymer battery. New battery has higher capacity and the tablet now has SUBSTANTIALLY LONGER battery life and works better than when new.

    Yes, it is a very important thing on that battery, because it protects it from overheating = permanent damage and capacity decrease :) I came to see how exactly it was changed from 3 wire to 2 wire battery (that whole circuit from one battery to another one), but it wasn't, so I am a bit disappointed, because "fixing" it by adding permanent resistor is like change a circuit breaker by a nail :) It will work fine, except of any suitable form of protection :)

    As others have said, DO NOT replace a 3 wire Li battery with a 2 wire. You will be asking for trouble of the explosive kind. If you have a fire and your house or car is damaged, the insurance company will have the device forensically examined and by fitting the wrong battery you will void your insurance.

    On some battery cells the terminals for connecting the actual cell to the protection board are really difficult to work with. So this is something to evaluate on a case by case basis. Also note that lithium cells are finicky with temperature, and there's zero protection - those connections go straight to the internal cell layers. So be careful not to short them, and if soldering use flux. You need to limit how much heat you apply as it sinks straight into the cell to a minimum, so get the actual soldering done quickly.

    Dud, you are bypassing the battery charge safety circuit. The white wire goes to a thermistor which detects the temperature of your battery. The safey circuit cuts of the connection if your battery heats up too much. Please don't try this at home.

    Can you advice how can i directly power a JBL Go using USB direct and bypass the battery? It sounds great compared to its peers in the competition but changing the dead battery will have me change it again after 2 years so there is no point reviving the JBL Go only to do same thing every time the battery no longer holds a charge plus I can still use it outside home by hooking it directly to a USB power bank, which in that case still makes it a go speaker. I have seen one in you tube doing the conversion but it is in Thai and pretty cannot be understood how he does it and I think that video was more of a show off of electrical/electronic skills rather than one one as a tutorial.

    Only thing I would warn ppl about is that the resistor in the original battery is intended to protect the tablet (and other stuff) from starting on fire. It will change value when it gets too hot and thus stop the charging. So if you do this you probably want to charge it very carefully from now on, especially when this new battery gets old.

    As long as it is the same battery type (Li-ion) and same voltage (3.7V) you should be good to go. By changing the battery circuit from the 2 wire to 3 wire system, you are actually making the cheap battery a little bit safer since you are adding some more protections to it.

    Shymal S / 1) Yes, if you use your original regulator and the regulator is in good condition. 2) No, if you just connect directly to the wires because the 10 000 mAh one takes a higher current to charge, so it works but there's danger to get on fire or destroy the device.

  • @jimmurphy5355

    @jimmurphy5355

    The protection board might be a regulator. But I think it is more likely to be a "BMS." For a single cell like this, the BMS would consist of a voltage detector and some MOSFET switches that simply turn off the current in the event that the cell voltage gets too low or too high. The actual charging regulator, the circuit that converts the 5 volts (or higher) that comes from the wall adapter to the carefully controlled current and voltage to correctly charge the cell, will be on the main board of the tablet.
