Repentance in the Bible

Is there a connection between sin and suffering?
In the Mass Readings Explained for the 3rd Sunday of Lent (Year C), Dr. Brant Pitre covers this topic straight from the lips of Jesus, which is the Gospel reading for this mass in Luke 13.
During 1st century Ancient Judaism it was common that people thought one's suffering was related to some form of sin that was committed by a person or his/her parents.
However, in Luke 13, Jesus makes clear that this common assumption that suffering is a result of sin is not always the case.
Jesus brings up the scenario of the massacre of the Galileans by Pilate and collapse of the Tower of Siloam to emphasize that many who suffered such a death was not due to any type of sin.
However, Jesus immediately flips it and tells his audience that if they do not repent, they too will likewise perish, the implication being that they will perish spiritually and die "the death" of spiritual death just like those Pilate and the tower killed physically died. So, while it is not necessarily the case that all sin causes physical suffering and/or physical death, it is clear that all sin does cause spiritual death, which is far worse, as that is permanent and eternal.
Moreover, in this intro video, Dr. Pitre also covers what the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches on the elements that constitute repentance. Rather than the negative connotation the word "repent" often conjures in our minds, it should be a most welcome word, as it is replete with positive dimensions that we all want in our lives.

That description of Pilate is interesting because so many movies, even the Passion, present the governor in a light that almost makes viewers sympathetic to the position in which he finds himself. I didn't realize Philo wrote anything about Pilate. In fact, I thought there was no written record of Pilate outside of the Gospel books and a cornerstone in a Caesarea theater - another false rumor shattered.

Being that pilot was a real person, he likely had many sides, good days, and bad. Many governors are just in ways, cruel in others. The gospels portray Pilot as cowardly and corrupt, not recognizing Truth Himself when standing right in front of Him. Pilot knew Christ was faultless, but caved to the whims of the mob and murdered an innocent man while releasing a murderous insurrectionist in His place.

This guy is directing you away from the teaching of the bible by referring to the catechism of the catholic church about what sin is. You can't define good and evil by your human standards. Before you can explain what repentance is, you should have understanding of what sin is. Because part of repentance is turning away from sin and turning your life to God. Now what is sin? 1 John 3:4 [4]Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. If you believe that the law is done away with, then no one can sin because as the teaching of most christian denomination the law is nailed to the cross and done away with. If there is no more law, no one can sin anymore. If no one can sin anymore, there is no need for repentance. How can a new believer repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus if there is no more sin for us to repent? Think about it.

Bernadette Vischjager. Repent means to (turn) Key words of repentance is (FROM and TO) you are turning FROM something TO Something. True repentance of salvation is to turn FROM unbelief in Jesus TO belief in Jesus. Salvation is to believe on the Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. It is to have Faith in Jesus Christ. Salvation ISNT TO “REPENT OF YOUR SINS TO BE SAVED!” Nor to rely on yourself as you would if you “repented of sins to be saved.” Simply repent to God and have faith in our lord and savior, Jesus Christ to be saved. the Grace of God and faith through Christ IS THE ONLY WAY TO BE SAVED! It’s biblical! Ephesians 2:8-9. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. Lest anyone should boast. When someone says “repent of your sins to be saved.” Or “Turn From your sins to be saved” You are adding works to Salvation. Salvation is a free gift of God. Romans 3:26. He did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies THOSE WHO HAVE FAITH IN JESUS! It’s ONLY BY GRACE AND FAITH IN JESUS THAT SAVES US! Mark 16:16. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 2 Corinthians 7:10. Godly sorrow brings REPENTANCE THAT LEADS TO SALVATION and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. Acts 5:31. God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins. Acts 11:18. When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance (TO TURN TO GOD AND HAVE FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST) that leads to life.” Behold, we are holy and righteous ONLY through Christ. Not of ourselves to work for being holy or righteous! We are saved by grace through faith AND NOT OF OURSELVES! When we have faith in Jesus THAT IS HOW WE ARE RIGHTEOUS! Jesus Christ wants to see us different as in turning from SOME sin before he comes back. But he don’t expect perfect, because he is the only perfect one. THEREFORE REPENTANCE IS TO TURN TO GOD AND FAITH IN CHRIST! Not to turn from evil! We ARE IN THE FLESH!

James 2:24 brother/ sister. We are a holy nation, a royal priesthood. Set apart by Christ to holiness. If we continue to sin without trying to turn away then we are crucifying Christ again and if we profess to be Christian this is gravely dangerous. We must turn from sin and live as Christ did as best we can. As i said before i will say again we are not saved by turning from sin but to turn from sin. Hope u understand brother/ sister

Christ came into the world to redeem it. Redemption is the primary theme of the Gospels. But you can't have redemption without repentance. I think you start your relationship with Jesus when you no longer want to sin. That was how it was for me anyway so to find it expressed that way in the Catechism is reassuring. I really enjoy the way Dr. Pitre breaks things down and connects dots. He is a very wise man.

Joseph Hromy I don't think that's quite accurate, given that the idea of penance, although I know a lot of Orthodox theologians will deny it, originated in the east. I think it's possible to be a hundred percent repentant, I just think it's also really hard.

  • @josephjude1290

    @josephjude1290

@@adamhovey407 I have to politely disagree. Repentance is a lifelong process. In the lives of the saints none would say they are done repenting until their last moments in this world. If they did I would guess they would say the sin of pride would be in a person who claims to be done repenting. We also believe sin is voluntary and involuntary. There is always movement towards God in this life and the next. Also, the idea of indulgences is a fairly recent innovation in the church. No church of the East has it; neither Oriental Orthodoxy, Eastern Orthodoxy or the Assyrian Church of the East. A lot of roman catholic theology is based off Aquinas; who again would be fairly recent. So much in common, but yet much to disagree on. I appreciate the debate.

Could it be said that Jesus would have been preparing the disciples to look at the crucifixion of Jesus as an unjustified punishment? For, there is a complicity on the part anyone who was watching the trial and the sentencing of Our Lord and shouting, crucify him. Even if forgiven after the events unfolded, the disciples who defected would have been vulnerable to the attacks of the accusers fales lines of attempts at condemnation. Jesus may have been alerting them in this passage.

🤔 Sin and evil or two different things. Evil is the cynical intent to violate another person’s civil rights. Sin may include iniquities, but sin is nothing more than transgression against the Mosaic Law Covenant. Repentance is sin o earn merits of forgiveness under the law. Under grace there are so sacrifices for sin. Because sin (the law) has been rescinded at the judgement seat of the cross. Under grace sin is gone, that’s why there are no more sacrifices for forgiveness. You’ve been forgiven if all transgression against the law. Your iniquities you own 😮. For the gifts of god (salvation under grace) is without repentance 😮.

The moral law isn't abolished, and Jesus certainly thinks you can sin. Jesus fulfilled the law, not destroyed it. If you abide fully in Christ then it is true you cannot sin, so if you do sin then you're not abiding fully in Christ this is why we repent to bring us away from the sin. It is also why we do penance, so we may further abide in Christ. I have never heard a theologian nor a believer say that sin doesn't exist anymore, because the jewish law is not in effect and I do not think this is a credible statement. To sin his to disobey God, disobeying his commandments and thus his law. If God tells you not to do a thing, and you do it then you've sinned, and have broken a law, even if the jewish laws have been fulfilled and are not in effect anymore
