Years ago I modified one of my wheel cylinder stone hones for the same purpose. It's not as fancy as this tool, but it's all we had back then and it worked like a charm on many old or neglected bores.

@Joe Doakes I can remember honing my wheel cylinders the same way. My neighbor was a mechanic , and he loaned me his tool.Did most of my own repairs back then. You sound like an old timer . Even today , I clean my shotgun bores with a copper bore brush on a drill , with Hoppes # 9. Shine like a mirror.

@@robertboreman7672 Well, with plastic wads and a pitted but clean bore, it realy does not mater, If you want to reload old style, no plastic wad, shot shells, polishing will improove paterns

This video reminds me of an uncle of mine, he did backyard mechanic work. He had a tool that worked similar to this one, except much shorter to hone out pits & rust inside brake wheel cylinders.

Larry is one of the finest, one thing I will say is sometimes he uses tools that are way to expensive to buy for the average gunsmith and should make videos on DIY smithing without having to buy those over priced tools

I have liked to see a before and after view of the bore.

Rather than sliding along a smooth barrel bore, shot will strike pit edges causing them to deflect and bounce around inside the barrel. It wrecks the accuracy of your shots and may eventually cause a serious injury or damage to the barrel.

@@garymcmullin2292 I don't use plastic wads. A lot of people use fibre wads. Also, I meant the shot column after it leaves the barrel, when it's 2o yards long.

I polished a barrel using a cleaning brush and 4x steelwhool...and a cordless drill.

Do you happen to have the part number for this? I went to Sunnen's website and failed to find it. I had my shotgun barrel's forcing cone lengthened and back bored they did a terrible job removing the machine marks caused by the process. I can't shoot slugs or buckshot that is not contained by a plastic wad or it it will lead foul something fierce.

Where can i get that Sunnen hone for a 16 gauge shotgun? It's not on Midway or Sunnen websites.

Buy 500 bucks of specialty tools to fix a bore on a 400 dollar shotgun? Nice video and informative, but most can't afford the equipment for home use. I like his videos, don't get me wrong, but who can afford this unless you are a gunsmith doing several barrels a year?

Ok. If you have to stop at the chokes, what do you do to the pitted chokes? Do you hope that the rust decided to be kind and only selectively rust the bore?

can we see a before and after of the bore ? my shotgun had some scratches but after 5 rnds. of high brass slugs, it now has some gouges that resemble pitting, shotgun is a stevens model 620

None. I have an old single shot that my grandad left behind the seat of his old farm truck for about 25 years. Mice chewed up the stuffing in the seat and pissed all down the inside of the barrel, leaving very large, deep pits. I cleaned the gun up good and have killed lots of game with it and even won quite a few turkey shoots. It's a factory full choked barrel that holds the tightest pattern of any shotgun I've ever shot.

Is it dangours to shoot with pitting?

My brother borrowed my shotgun years ago, used it, didnt clean it, then kept it for over a year. The bore has light spots of some permanent rust, it appears. I assumed it was beyond repair, though i never looked into it. I wonder now if its worth saving since it does look like a labor intensive process?

Would more than likely mess up the rifling pretty badly imo

This tool needs a bush halfway along the spindle to keep everything square.

Our people do use sand paper with appropriate cleaning rod.

You don't. At that point, I say leave it alone as any means to correct it would cost more than the rifle is worth either time-wise, money-wise or both

chrismc410 no they’re great pieces of history that are meant to be protected and preserved for future generations to come yes you should clean them up u sound like one of those idiots that let their stuff rust away to begin with these rifles are going good around 500 last time I checked just because they where 100 dollars at one time you treat them like trash with that mindset I hope you don’t buy them or other historical firearms

I think historical firearms should be left alone, blemishes and all and trying to correct them could and would be costly for more than it's worth and would also destroy collector value. Most collectors want a piece as unaltered and complete as possible and any attempt to correct blemishes or issues would destroy that value.

it’s the bore the gun will have absolutely no value if it continues to rust a piece of history away u just showed you don’t care and proved my point the need preserved and Protcected not making it shiny new

OR you can just apply some Mother Care metal polising compound on your normal soft shotgun cleaning rod attachement and use a hand held drill to rotate the rod . Make sure the hand held drill has speed adjustment so u cane start slow and then speed up. No risk of over doing it and the polishing out of the scratches , rust or pitting can be done at any point inside the barrel. After the pittng is smoothed out just move the the rod back and forth through out the inside of the barrel aroubd 10 times with the drill rotating at full speed . You barrel will look as good an new and cleaner than your could ever get it by any other cleaing method or product.

"Mothers" car polish is not going to polish out pitting. Big difference between polishing and honing. But, what do I know. I'm just a 40 year tool and die maker and gun smith.

If the pits are not too deep, this method will work. But too often the pits are way too deep and this method will likely cause a barrel bulge or split when fired, because to remove them completely will take too much metal off. This is a case by case only method.

The vast majority of pits are in one small area and on one side of the barrel interior. They usually go partly round the circumference direction. It can only be removed by removing steel adjacent to it, so that access can be got to the pitted area. You cannot polish out the pit without getting the hone into it. If the barrel is a 13 bore to begin with, then the entire barrel can be let out to 12 bore. This is best done with reamers or better with spill supported reamers known as "spill boring". But most barrels are 12 when new, so this process widens it to 11 bore. In Europe this process required re-proof because the original proof measurements are obsolete. . Pitted guns still shoot well if the pitting is minor, but if the pitting is bad, I am afraid an expensive sleeveing job or re-barreling job is needed. This is only a good idea if the gun is of a very high quality to begin with.

Why doesnt it harm the extractors to leave them in?

+MadMike1251 That is exactly what I am saying! the tubes are now so thin it would be proofed as a 10 bore, and would fail, the solution would be to have Teage liners sleeved in without altering the outside appearance, then re poof it. Or hang it on the wall.

Silly question, why shouldn't you fire a shotgun that is pitted? How does the pitting affect your shot?

I think it has something to do with too much friction between the barrel and the shot cup, it could possibly raise the chamber pressure as the shot cup needs more effort to be pushed out.

I have an old pinfire shotgun. It is 16 bore and from around the 1850s, made in Belgium by a E.Bernard. It is in nice condition apart from three things, the less serious two are that it has a couple of dents on both barrels but they can easily be fixed, second is the bore has pitting but like the dents, can be fixed. Now the most serious is that about just over halfway down the barrel towards the muzzle end, there is a pin sized hole where it has pitted and gone through. Can this be fixed by a gunsmith?

Kind of an incomplete video. I'd like to know what the bore diameter was and what it finished at. Also what about the honing or reaming the fixed chokes

Cleaning kits are only for cleaning gun powder and real light corrosion not pitting. If u had a real expensive gun that had pitting in the barrel u would do the same if u wanted to keep the gun .Some barrels have a minimum thickness they need to be in order for servicing

My savage 775a is almost 70 years old I cleaned here up and reblued here never republished the bore the old girl still shoots.

I bet he is just using normal shop oil. Honing oil is not needed for this purpose.

i would never do such a thing in my gun i would rather use cleaning kits that are effective than thinning out my barrel with a grinding stone.
